Life / Well-educated Polish modern slaves abroad [35]

This is what I am talking about.I mean, for Polish truck driver it may be fun to work as a truck driver in the UK or US. For somebody young and talented , who was studying for many yrs. here to get his Masters or whatever, it is the road to nowhere...

Ask Polish waiter/waitress next time what kind of diploma she has and why she's/he's wasting her/his life ...

I think that main reason for it is luck of confidence. There is something about us Polish, our history , upbringing that we often feel worse.....Fortunately it is changing slowly now....

I think that lots of these graduated waitresses gave up as they assume that noone give them better job.

I don't really know how it is in different countries but I find UK open and tolerant for educated , open-minded people from all over the world.

Life / Well-educated Polish modern slaves abroad [35]

No language. No life. Just this "needy" family left in Poland who thinks that money grows on trees. They want cars, furniture, expensive clothes or just cash.

And the "slave" stays another year longer, and then another... Sad.

it is slavery.....and too big devoution for me.

UK, Ireland / Poles in UK claiming state benefit have cost the taxpayer 45M pounds [55]

I totally agree with you. My favorite papers are "Wprost", "Newsweek" and of course "Angora".

I like Wprost and Neewsweek but I am not so big fun of Angora....

When I read Wprost or even Polityka, I learn something. When I read one of the major newspapers here (with exceptions) I get bored.

We have completely different mentality....as you said you learn something interesting....
In UK is like in USA the best hits are...labour MP had sex with his secretary,.....married MP had sex with a man.....plus lots of moanning and in tabloids from bottom range...few half naked girls....

I am not convinced that they earn 10 times more in Uk( even much more )

I am not so sure about Euro but I guess they earn about 20k-22K pounds gross annually so it would be about 1200 pounds net monthly.- 7000pln

- in Poland is it about 1500 PLn?

History / What does it mean to be Polish? [46]

Patrycja,

I think that you are polish by blood but customs, culture .....to be honest they change all the time.

I have been living in UK for ( only 4.5 years) and things are changing in Poland all the time.
Even if I visit once , twice a year it is not enough as I don't live there.

I am thinking if I was to come back in 20 years...everything would be different.

History / What does it mean to be Polish? [46]

I think that to be 100% polish someone has to be at least brought up in Poland. If someone has polish roots ( parents grandparents...) he can say that he/she is polish but does this person understands our culture? mentality?political, ecomonical reality ....

I have colleauge who was born in Uk but her parents are Italian and even she was going to english school, brought un in UK she has Italian heritage food, language, customs....

she feels like someone between Italian and English.

News / BRAIN DRAIN ON POLAND [101]

As a journalist, I speak to lots of Polish people and the ones that will not return are the youngest, best educated and enterpreneurial people. The ones that will go back are the older, less flexible, less ambitious ones, who live in a language and cultural ghetto.

I don't agree with it.

Some people are well educated, ambitious with good ideas who stay ( or came back from emigration) in Poland, open their own companies, do careers...work in internatinal companies...

It seems to be big thing now in Polish media that all young, educated people leave Poland.... do they really?

Some young people have good jobs in Poland, some just after school left Poland but did they achieve so much abroad? We don't really know it .. maybe not, maybe they are already back or will be soon back....

I don't want to sound mean as I know there are Polish people in UK who have good jobs and carers but I have impression that majority of polish emigration are people who work hard here but I wouldn't say they are very ambitious and educated.

That was the point of my previous post - you lose with local people if you want to get a better jobs (this is my experience, so I'm talking for myself only) - you have to accept the worst ones, in terms of both conditions and salaries.

You lose in the beginning as they don't know anything about you ( no work history in UK) but if someone is ambitious, good, speaks good English he can always move on....

Life / Well-educated Polish modern slaves abroad [35]

I would recommend it for these ppl who speak Polish of course and are wondering why young and well-educated Polish folks accept modern slave position all over the so-called first world.

The only reason is usually connected with money. Go abroad work hard ( even below your education, experience) earn,,eave,save...and come back.

From my observation well-educated people do it if they go abroad for short time-1-2 years.
If they go for longer thet try to "move on" and look for better job, do some courses, trainings.....

Buit again Polish can do it in Europe as we are in UE in USA if someone doesn't have green card or amercian citizenship ....he can't do much. Little depressing I suppose....

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

What I find strange is how younger people round where I live are so much more polite than the miserable oldies. I go for a lot of walks along a path on which cyclists go - when I get out of the way for an oldie they almost never say thank you. There seems to be a cut-off point aroung 45 where Poles become old grumps (and, coincidentally, seem unable to drive without aggression or in a straight line).

That is true and so diferent to UK . I find in UK older people nice, friendly and cheerful.
Lots of young people are rude, loud, mumbling no speaking and with very little manners. I could only suspect it is partly result of Blair politics.

News / What are your 10 fave things about Poland? And 10 least favourite? [130]

Matyjasz,
I don't think that anyone likes ZUS in Poland - But our pension system is changing for better now.

In UK papers moan about their pensions it all the time. In Poland at least your pension depends on your salary and years of working in UK state pension is the same.

I mean if there are 2 people one with big salary and big contribution and small salary and small contribution they both end up with the same state pensions.

it is very communistic :)everyone gets the same.

I think in Poland wedding ring is on right hand but when woman's husband dies she moves it on left hand. I don't know if people still do it but older generations did.

no, maybe it is just culture and....I suppose room for it.

In USA houses are in general bigger with basements so there is more room for dryer.

Life / Worrying observation about Polish attitudes to lying and cheating [62]

When commenting as a Polish person please tell me honestly whether (in your experience) it is common for children to cheat at tests in school. I can honestly say that (in my experience) it is very very rare in England.I can also say that my parents would have been very ashamed if I had.

That is true but is it because they are so honest or they are frightened as consequences are much harsher in UK?????

From my observation in UK there are thieves, murderers, people copying pirate cd, DVD, deal drugs.....no difference to Poland I am afraid.

It is the same like someone said that in Poland there is dogs **** everywhere. That is true but I don't even know if there is any lawa against it? Even it is noone bothers.

I remember from my visit to USA that they are very strict about it.

if your neighbour noticed tha you didn't clean after your dog he would report you in 5 minutes .

Im not saying I havent told a couple of white lies along the way through life (phoning in work sick after going on a bender the night before - I say Ive been sick, I was I just didnt tell them the whole truth to why I was sick), that would be a lie!

Amathys good example,

being sick on Monday morning after big drinking or after football match. Relatively often happens in UK.I would say much more often than in Poland.

they are not very popular in Poland. I don't know why? Mayge because of the cost of electricity?

My cousin who lives in USA always moan about it in Poland.
her dryer is great you don't have to iron clothes.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

Maybe I used wrong expression in the first place.... when I started it.

My mum also worked ( she had to ) was independedent and at the same time was the best mum on the world.

I meant about these women who don't have much of their all life, interest, who devot themselves too much for children and don't let them to grow up as they always want to look after them, always help financially.... Maybe better expression would be "kwoki"

Life / Worrying observation about Polish attitudes to lying and cheating [62]

I agree there is nothing good with cheating but like Matyjasz said:
Austria and Russia, and then in the 20th century over 40 years of “communism”. In both situations school was just another form of the oppression used by our enemies and it just stayed in our genes that there's nothing wrong with cheating the system. Totally different rules are used towards people. If you lie a person or cheat on her/him it shatters your good opinion, and nobody wants that.

I think that in personal life we don't cheat any more than other nations but "cheating the system"- it will take years, and years to change our perception.
