I am not sure who i should be quoting.
It's a disease? Where'd you get that idea from?

No.

I was not talking about you.

I do however disagree with you on these views.

That is probably as natural as other forms of behavior.

I never hear the same descriptions for necrophilia or paedophilia (thankfully).

There also seems to be a natural interest in the bad, ugly, dangerous and the deadly

I don't get your point?.

As a gay friend of mine says, "only the boring stay straight".

If it matters my gay friend is a woman.

I do not understand some of the harsher reactions towards gays on this thread, what two (or more) consenting adults do in the privacy of their own homes is their own business.

I don't hate women because they fancy men.

In Sligo in Ireland, there were (probably still are) many gay men beaten, some close to death.
I have difficulty understanding the idea, an example (in a Sligo accent) I am a man and I am straight, so I will beat the living sh1t out of people who are not men like me to prove i am straight.

It seems to me that these guys must be in the closet.

Have you any gay friends?

I have, both male and female, no big deal.
The only thing i do not like is how much press homosexuality gets, heterosexuality is still the most common form of sex, yet I don't see straight parades. Probably because of the lack of persecution.

I have been to several gay parades and had a ball

The bit I dislike about the title of the topic is the word "tolerance".
If someone said "I tolerate you" it means they to bear or endure you, even though they don't know you. So what if your gay?.

As a gay friend of mine says, "only the boring stay straight".

The thing I have noticed is that people who do not like gays or what they do with their partners, tend to be REALLY explicitly graphic in their obsessive descriptions.

I am trysexual,
I'll try anything once, twice if I like it ;)

Travel / My trip to Poland - I hated Katowice, loved Krakow, and adored Bielsko [59]

Never having been to Birmingham, I wouldn't know but youz don't seem to think much of it (except the origianl poster)

I am still trying to figure out what "capital of culture" means? Is it when a particular city has high unemployment, they try to inject some investment in to it by giving it a funny title?

An auld Limerick about Krakow would be great, I will get back to you on that one.

Life / Where to do laundry in Krakow? [24]

We decided that for the main washes we came down to the one I had heard of. Supposedly there is another one, but we couldn't find it.

Now just beware that you don't loose one sock in every pair that slips into the alternative dimension through a black hole. Funny to think there is another universe with only one sock from a pair in it...

hand washed

I hate hand washing, socks and small items are alright but jeans or a towels are trouble.

This isn't too long a trip on the tram though so it's all good.

Trams are great, like a slow roller-coaster round the city :0)

This thread should be renamed "Birmingham over shadows my trip to Poland".

The Brits are colonising again. Run to the hills, ha ha ha.

Are you Brits just doing this because Poland is one of the countries you didn't rule?.

Anything said, can and will be used against you in a court of law.

Life / Where to do laundry in Krakow? [24]

Hello Cardno85,

Having just moved to Krakow, our flat doesn't have a washing machine.

I know it is a big problem and a very good business idea to open a laundry. The only one i have ever heard of is the one you mentioned.

I never understood why this is, is everyone expected to have a washing machine?

best of luck smelly pants :)

News / Poles Ranks First in Computer Coding [47]

I love 'em bits and bytes :)

I am trying to get my head around them. That was the main reason I joined this forum, to learn more about computers, which is working out for me, ok.

im sure its the same with you and Krakow...

None of the replies so far are from Polish people, interestingly enough.
And is probably the main reason everyone has jumped on what you said about Birmingham rather than comment on Katowica, Krakow and Bielsko.
Preference is subjective and can not be debated for that reason.

I found the lake on the internet...

Hey that looks really good, I might go up the road and take a look, thanks.

Good stuff.

Krakow is great, I have never been to Birmingham but I hear good stories from it, from an architectural point of view.

I had a great time, the only dark spot being Katowice...

I am not native Polish but I think it is widely known that katowice was of communist design and meant to "show off" communism.

Also built up wind from Krakow apparently cause the commies didn't like old stuff and wanted to destroy it, to build a new.

I live close enough to Bielsko-Biala, it is lovely here.

But I am afraid I do not know the cliffs and lake you are talking about.

Have you any photos to show us??

Travel / Snow tyres in Poland... legal or reccomended? [25]

Everyone that I know of refers to them as summer tyres and NEVER universal tyres

I have been told they are two different things and Uneversal tyres are the in between?
I am not an expert by any means.
OOooohhh, nice info on the winter ones, by the way, I am going to read that.

you are using each type of tyre double as long because it us used every year only for six months.

I just hate the bloody cues at the beginning and end of every winter.

Stupid to economize on safety I think.

Agreed,

Travel / Finally starting to plan my trip to Poland!! [2]

Hello TJ

And welcome to the Polish Forum.

Here are my reviews from Krakow, Poland: Krakow travel Poland.

I would leave Auchwitz till the end of your trip because it may make you very depressed and mess up your trip. I am not a big fan of Warsaw but I am sure than someone on here can tell you good things to see and do there. There is also Wielcka salt mines, they are worth the visit and they are cloae to Krakow too.

Good luck

Travel / Heading to Poland via Ireland [5]

Cool Softsong,

The weather is not so bad here in Krakow about 25 degree but Ireland is full of doom and gloom, they are just coming out of a very wet summer and into a recession (ooohhhh! don't mention the "R" word there), so have pity and buy everyone a round.

I love it when people try to find their roots, it is an adventure. One I am sure you will enjoy.
Tale care and have the luck of the Irish,

(I am Irish living in Poland)

Travel / Snow tyres in Poland... legal or reccomended? [25]

Hello Danny_R,

Are tickets really so expensive? Of course it is Christmas but is it really cheaper to drive from Leeds?

I recommend this drive in Summer for the obvious reason, it'll be freezing.
I am pretty sure winter tyres are a must by the law but i will get back to you on that one.
But in fairness you must have them, it gets cold and snowy.
I think snow chains are illegal on most roads as they destroy the road surface. Again I will ask but I would not get my hopes up.

It is also not just a matter of seeing snow there's black ice and all.
Especially that you are not accustomed to driving in the snow, I certainly would not recommend doing it in summer tyres.

I sound like a prune, but people do crash.

I recommend flying and driving through Europe not in winter.
I have just come back from a trip through Europe.

UK, Ireland / Polish brands in England [12]

I have never thought about this before, I am sure i know loads. There is a paint called Bolix:

economictimes.indiatimes.com/News/News_By_Industry/Cons_Products/Paints/Berger_Paints_bags_Polish_firm_Bolix_for_38_million/articleshow/2997111.cms

and there are a few shops here with F,art but they sell clothes. I guess I laugh too much t find out what they really are. The most offensive would be "Kefir" which in South African English is probably the most offensive word you can call a person who is black. I will look out for more, i am sure there are. An interesting one but not offensive is the use of "Xero" meaning to photocopy, the way I say "Hoover" to mean "vacuum"

UK, Ireland / Does Irish government pay Polish workers to return to Poland? [18]

Glasgow is part of the UK,

And Poland and the U.k. are part of the E.U. sooo...???
Maybe it is also semantics to call Scotland a country? which it is.
But I will agree with you, that racism is not the correct word.
And management of people is the job of your government

Too many of them and not enough jobs, houses, money, welfare benefits, school places etc etc to go around.

Do you think the whole thing would be better if there was no credit crunch?.
When you need foreign workers you throw open your doors.
Then the greedy fat cats mess everything up and the very foreigners you needed are the ones first to go. Wham Bam, thank you Mam? it doesn't work like that and what a relief.

European Utopia, which you seem to want, doesn't exist.

I would not use the word Utopia but the E.U certainly exists and it is our right to travel and work.
Perhaps England should not have let other E.U, members work there?
Perhaps you should get tougher on non-E.U. immigrants.
And perhaps the fault you see, might be with your government?

I have heard this argument time and time again about (Irish) immigrants.
Like a broken record.
Now it is our right.

Life / Deadly Roads - "Are polish roads really THAT dangerous?" [139]

I often drive through Poland.
My take on this topic is that , yes the roads are bad but there are road works everywhere. So it is changing.
The same thing happened in Ireland.
It is good to see people working on it. It will not be so bad soon enough.
I just crossed the boarder and it was the first time the road was new and I could use it. It was very good.
I think the same thing about corruption in politics, if you see it in the paper everything is ok but it is when you do not see it, you know there is a big problem?.

I have a bit of a cold and I am not sure if what I am typing makes much sence, or is it that I always write non-sence? ha ha ha don't answer that.

UK, Ireland / Does Irish government pay Polish workers to return to Poland? [18]

some Irish people seem to think we have no obligations to newer, poorer member states

Coffin ships.
I'm from Dublin and can't believe some of the crap people say about immigrants.
I believe Ireland has the biggest population of immigrants in the world.

But Polish are NOT immigrants.

It's not racist to expect a little control over numbers of the people entering any country.

Actually it is, if people from Glasgow were "controlled" and could not work in London, it would be racist (for want of a better word), this is the E.U.
