History / Poland-Russia: never-ending story? [1341]

I despise all who is below me and of course hate all who above me. It's so natural !

Then you have nobody to despise.

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

$0.97/liter in Niagara but some people still go to the US to fill'er up. A $75 tank of gas in Niagara will cost about $45 just across the border. Silly feeling to think that gas across the border is actually Canadian and we pay more for it here.

Love / English Girls according to Polish Guys....... [68]

For instance English men do dress more fashionably then anyone else in Europe and do take more pride in their appearance.

I'm not really sure what the difference is between a pair of jeans and a t-shirt on the Continent, and a pair of jeans and a t-shirt on the Island.

Life / Should I expect culture shock when coming to Poland from the US or UK? [34]

The big thing she worries about is my dealing with lessor comfort.

That will depend on how much you are willing to spend to stay comfortable. It's no tlike A/C or cars are not available in Poland. On the other hand we both know pretty shabby areas in the US where "comfort" means people don't have to dodge bullets.

For starters, unlike downtown Detroit, you can walk in Zielona Gora. The city is quiet and perhaps more like Windsor, ON, only a little prettier and seems to have more character.

I wouldn't mind living there again some day, but god help me if I had to live in Detroit ;)

Love / Polish attitudes to pregnacy outside marriage [7]

Polish tradition is often to get married, and to take care of the baby. As for the parents' future, it has little do with tradition but rather with their individual personalities.

I know of two women, both got pregnant very early (one before the uni. the other as a first year student). One is a successfull researcher, now working for UNESCO, the other is a top notch doctor, one of the best in the country in her area. Both of them worked very hard but, with the help of their other halves and parents, completed their formal studies within the usual time.

Language / Abecadło (The alphabet) [19]

May I ask your source for that, and why do they say so?

The source ar electures by Jan Miodek, a Polish linguist en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Miodek I didn't stufy Polish so I wasn't a student of his, but his lectures were popular and free to attend. A real pleasure.

To make a long story short, the reason, as proposed by Miodek, was that after WW2 (due to forced migrations) the intermix of varius Polish regionalisms in Western Poland made all aware of their own. A tendency towards the avoidance of those local expressions, accents and styles created what he regarded correct Polish (pronounciation, style and, to a lesser degree, vocabulary). That tendency is much weaker in areas dominated by a certain dialect.

Life / Gay scene good in Poland? [66]

The Biblical god doesn's have a woman. He did have some quarrels with Lucifer though (broken heart?), and he seems to like the company of some Archangels, such as Gabriel. Who knows, perhaps the Biblical god is gay?

Language / The only polish word a foreigner won't ever say correctly :P [113]

James Revan wrote:
ńł

I avoided that - it somehow just didn't look right.

You did well here.
Each language allows some consonnat clusters while others are not allowed. Neither English nor Polish are exceptions in this regard.

For instance in: ńłóżąśćę (above) the ńł is not possible in Polish.
Additionally, some consonant/vowels combinations (such as "ćę") do not occur in Polish.

Bottom line, the challenge of the original post is not an exercise in the Polish pronounciation.

Life / Animosity between Poland vrs. Polonia? [98]

we had communism because USA sold us

Sadek, at times you offered an argument or two. With the above it's clear you are loosing a grip of what it is that really bothers you. Whatever the US did or not during and soon after WW2 had nothing to do with American Polonia. American, as well as other Polonia was certainly supportive of pre 1939 Polish borders.

It is also remarkable that you keep on stressing the American Polonia. I am not a member of the group but it still strikes me that you continually single them out. I don;t think you have a problem with Polonia but with the US government. Some members of the US Polonia support it, others don't. The same in Poland.

You are blabbing about American "sale" of Poland to commies and you somehow connect that with American Polonia. It is strange that you happilly point out the contribution of German Polonia to Poland's economy but you never made a connection of German Polonia with Germany having exterminated about 6.5 million of Polish citizens during the exact same period when the Americans were selling Poland.

As for the right to vote; I don't, others do. Those who vote, do so because it is legal. It is a law introduced and sanctioned by the government of Poland - not by Polonia anywhere in the world. If you have a problem with that, lobby your government. Leave those who abide by the law alone.

Life / Animosity between Poland vrs. Polonia? [98]

I think we should do somethnig with this phenomen that people who don't want to live in Poland (free) who prefere american guns and cars than our life style should vote.

That is kinda silly. What's the problem with American guns. It's not like they can buy Polish guns so easilly. Not to mention Polish cars. Are Japanese or German cars OK? Do Poles in Poland all drive Polish cars?

It is enought to see how Americans Poles voted in all electons.

There is quite a bit of Polonia outside the US. Did you realize that?
What about Poles living permamantly in Germany, who can be in Poland every weekend just because Germany is closer to Poland than the US? Should they have different rights than Poles in North America?

They were agains Poland in EU. They voted on LPR (radio Maryja) later on PiS.

It's not like Polish elections were decided by a hair where Polonia vote was decisive. Are all these "Mohair Berets" the result of the Polonia vote? Was Radio Maryja imported from the US?

Again, personally I would not vote in Polish election while living permamantly abroad, but you need to provide reasons better than the ones you did.

I believe that last Polish elections they had here (US) you didn't need a Polish Passport or any other documents. All you had to do was to say you were Polish.

You can't blame Polonia for that. This is a problem with Poland's government.

Do all Americans with British origin have right to vote in UK elections ?

No. Only the ones who have British citizenship. Same for Poles.

I think solution that only emigrants who live abroad shorter than 8 years should vote is ok.

Not 9?

I don't like it either. But it was pointed out to me [on these boards] that those who vote could well be voting for their future. A future when they return to Poland.

I made a conscious decision not to vote in Polish elections as I feel I have no right to decide about other people's lives from afar.

As for "voting for their future" when/if I return then that's when I would vote: to put it simply - I'm not gonna call home and tell them what they should serve for dinner tonight if I am on a trip 2000 miles away. When I come back then I'll be in a position to ask for what I want.

Japan did indeed attack Purl Harbour with aircraft that left aircraft carriers.

Can you provide us with a half a somewhat reputable link confirming that?

Travel / Ticket controllers in public transportation vehicles in Poland [24]

It is so easy just to jump on and off buses without a ticket.

Not really. The moment a controller(s) board the bus/tram the passengers can exit only through some of the exists, and that's where their tickets are checked. On some buses the driver could also remotely lock the stamping machine so that if a person didn't stamp their ticket they couldn't do it the last minute.

Japan never attacked Purl Harbour. I'm not even sure Purl Harbour even existed in 1941.

USA, Canada / OBTAINING POLISH CITIZENSHIP (living in the USA). Petition documents? [28]

however the U.S. will allow you to become a citizen of another country regardless.

To my knowledge the US may take away the American citizenship only from naturalized citizens who subsequently acquired a citizenship of another country, unless the person who aquired the non-American citizenship was not in a position to make a legaly binding decision in the matter (for instance children under certain age)

Love / Polish-Islam Relationship Union [450]

6. IF women gets raped, she does not have to provide 4 witnesses. This is a false and untrue lie. Four witnesses is required for adultry. This is for peoples own protection, so nobody can just go accuse someone if they are innocent.

Really?

Pakistan's Parliament recently approved a bill to change the 1979 Hudood Ordinance, a law based on Islamic principles that requires rape victims to produce four witnesses to the crime. But the move has angered many conservative Muslims.

"We will not let Pakistan become secular," the supporters of a coalition of Islamic groups chanted.
