Life / Spending a few months in Poland [23]

Is this easy / fun to do?

Not so easy , especially if you have not taught before.....I found my self doing it , and even ended up teaching little monsters ( kids ) Thankfully the children in Poland are quite nice people compared to the UK , and i did enjoy it.....One sweet little girl even brought me flowers to the school....How could i not enjoy that....The money was not great , but i don,t have a mortgage or rent to pay , so it was enough....

Life / Polish Parents are controlling [58]

I wouldn,t say it was just a Polish thing....I was born and brought up in the UK...My mom came and tried to drag me home from a gathering of several of my biker mates when i was 16...very embarrasing when you are trying to be a tough biker guy , i hated her for it , and we never got on at all till i moved out when i was 17...Looking back now i can see she was just trying to look after the only man left in her life after my dad went absent when i was 5....My mom died three years ago two days before my birthday....I wish i understood then what i do now.....

Life / Is drinking water in Poland good? [96]

Hi Pola......I can only speak for myself , but the Polish friends i had living at my house in the Uk while they worked in UK were never looked down on by me or my friends....They were seen as just what they were , some people just trying to earn a living...And as for complaining about Poland...Most of the complaints i hear come from Polish people......I am a teacher of English , and i am constantly hearing from my students what an awfull place Poland is....On the other hand all my English friends who have visited here think the place is wonderfull...I can understand that for a young person , living in a country with lovely lakes and forests is no big deal , they want a new car , the latest stereo , money to go to night clubs...thats why they are all heading off to other countries....Hopefully , when they have made their money they will come back to Polska , and invest it here....I think Poland has a great future , i just hope i am not the only one here to enjoy it.....

UK, Ireland / Immigrants trigger Irish rethink [71]

I had a feeling you were not anti British...I must say i have never had a problem living here in Poland , and have been welcomed by everyone.....Mind you i do try to fit in with the way of life here and be part of the community.....I certainly don,t think Poland is perfect , but i like it , and don,t find that much to complain about....I like Poland the way it is , and don,t want it to get too much like the UK....Most of my Polish friends seem to think life would be pefect in Poland if it was like the UK , they are puzzled as to why an English person would want to live here....I think there are things that do need to change in Poland , but i hope i am dead before it gets the same as in the UK.....

History / WW2: Britain Declares War on Germany to Save Poland [290]

Polish army were quite happy to invade Czechoslovakia.

Well i can,t speak for the whole Polish army , my friend is just one person....But i suspect many Polish soldiers were not so happy about invading their neighbours...

But wasn,t this thread supossed to be about ww2...?

History / WW2: Britain Declares War on Germany to Save Poland [290]

Of course we should not forget that the UK would have been even closer to defeat in the battle of britain if it had not been for the Polish squadrens in the R.A.F....and the many Polish soldiers who fought in the British army in British uniform...My father was in the tank regiment in the desert , most of his comrades were Poles.....By contrast when i was in the Army Poland was a potential enemy as part of the warsaw pact , thankfully it never came to that.....A Polish friend of mine who was in the Army assured me that they would have turned on the Russians first....Thank goodness we never had to put it to the test....

History / WW2: Britain Declares War on Germany to Save Poland [290]

why did they contract with the Poles at all and form an alliance

I think this was done as a deterent , which i am sure they believed they would not have to back up with action....When Poland was invaded the UK was in no position to do very much at all.....If it hadn,t been for that signed agreement with the Poles then i am pretty sure the Uk would have made lots of protests , but would not have declared war , and would have hoped Hitler would stop at Poland and not cause any more bother....After the slaughter of the first war there was no great desire to go at it again with Germany , and had it not been for that agreement we would have stayed out of the war untill France was attacked...

History / Should goverments pull in war criminals from WWII? [33]

You have to bear in mind that when the Germans first invaded the Ukraine they were welcomed as liberators...Most Ukrainians were glad to see the back of Stalins boys , and thought life could not be any worse under the Germans....Many Ukrainians were happy to join the Germans in the fight against Russia , thinking this would help them regain some independace after the war....If Hitler hadn,t been so insistant that all slavs were sub humans unworthy of being allies he could have had all Ukrainia on his side , and maybe Belarus too...The outcome of the war in the east may have been different....Instead the Ukrainians were treated as badly as all the other ocuppied slavs , and soon turned against the Germans.....The waffen ss were a rule unto themselves , they had Danes , French , Dutch , Latvian . and even Muslim ss divisions , indeed most of the troops defending Berlin to the last were not Germans.....

News / The most useless things in Poland [140]

Electricity sockets that come out the wall when you pull the plug out.

Oh its normal then...i thought it was only happening on my farm because the stuff was old....And while we are on the subject.....Why can,t they make light fittings that actually fit to the ceiling rather than dangeling on the wire four inches below it.....
