NAME THIS FOOD PLEASE (Hungarian pastry / Zurek?)

I need some help from all you Polish food experts on this forum....First of all i would like to know the Polish name for something i ate in a small cafe in Zlocieniec....My Polish friend told me it was Hungary cake , but other Polish friends say there is no such thing.....The second item was a crusty bread bun which was hollowed out and had soup in it , very tasty....Can anyone name these mystery foods , so i can ask for them again in the future.......

was it a dessert? we eat placek węgierski (hungarian pancake) but it's not sweet. it's a kind of pancake made of grated potatoes and served with sauce (with beaf, I think). that's the only dish I know that has "hungarian" in its name.


It must have been ŻUREK, that's the only soup we serve in a bread bun. but not every restaurant serves it like that, żurek is also served in a plate:)so you should say you want żurek w chlebie (zurek in a bread bun)

No not a desert , and it did have meat in it , so i think it was probably the Hungarian pancake you mentioned.....Thanks for the help....Might just go to the cafe and have some right now.....

It could be Hungarian Goulash in Bread Bun (Gulasz Węgierski)... they serve them sometimes inside bread instead of the plate.

It can be also a "strogonow", u can eat this dinner in meany restaurant and marriage party.

i just came home from Poland. God damn it - placek węgierski - one of the tastiest things i have ever eaten.

Literally, it would translate to Hungarian pancakes. Very good with garlic sauce.

"placek po węgiersku" - "Hungarian-style (potato) pancake": a thick potato cake with pieces of meat, mushrooms and vegetables, some sauce and spices (Hungarian goulash like) ... very, very tasty

I wonder if it's Polish or Hungarian dish? I've asked Hungarians once about this, but they've never heard about it. So - maybe it's Polish one? :)

It's a funny thing about Polish cuisine - there is a couple of dishes which ale called like that:

placek węgierski
pierogi ruskie
barszcz ukraiński
gulasz angielski (type of tinned meat actually)

This potato pancake might have been called węgierski because it's served with some kind of goulash, which is definitely associated with Hungarian cuisine. Besides the food is also called "placek po węgiersku" which actually seems a more proper name, as it suggests it's an immitation of typical Hungarian food (which anyway doesn't apply to all cases e.g. karp po żydowsku has hardly anything to do with Jewish traditional food).
