Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

Your grandmother's naturalization papers will have details. As will her birth and marriage certificates.
If you can get hold of her birth certificate.... you should be able to check her mother and father's name as well as place of birth.

If she is willing to help... ask her as many questions as possible. take notes and make sure that she confirms the details.

Love / POLISH SIBLINGS SLEEPING TOGETHER! [172]

When the trust is gone its all gone wondering, you shouldnt need counselling you've done nothing wrong...

Agreed.

It's him that needs to put things right. But he won't, I'm sure.

You don't trust him, but at the same time you trust him when he says he loves you and will take you back in two months. You are only listening to the bits you want to hear. Look at the whole situation and find some friends at home that you can confide in. Your friends and family can see things that we on the forum can't.

By rail. Berlin - Wroclaw about five hours. In a good/fast car... three hours.

Peter,

Amazing. I can see that you've put a lot of effort into your family history.

I've got to say that your research tells me that I'm going to have some problems looking into my wife's side of the family. But at least the records can be found, and that's very heartening..

Work / Thinking of spending time teaching in Poland! [38]

Katjusha,

First of all, most students in the scools we are talking about are usually aged about sixteen and over. Many of these students are adult.

You don't need any certificates to teach. Competition is such that these schools sometimes take whoever they can get.

Schools teaching ordinary pupils are quite different. If you are worried about sending your kids to regular school, international or otherwise, you will have no problems.

Love / POLISH SIBLINGS SLEEPING TOGETHER! [172]

he got really angry and said if i eve talk about that situatuion then he will break up with me. he thinks its sick and disgustiong

He is covering up something. If it was innocent he would have explained [again] or maybe laughed it off.

I've never met a man yet who had the chance of sex [I assume] with his girlfriend and then slept in another room with his sister.

You would be very wise to get out of this relationship.......... see if he tries to get you back. I doubt that he will.

Travel / My opinion on Gdansk and Poland after 11 days [45]

There is also a problem with graffiti in Wroclaw. However, in some areas of the city the authorities actively encourage it. They allow 'graffiti artists' to paint on designated walls in particular areas.

They were either destroyed in the mid-late 1940's or left untended. I cannot even find the grave stone of my great grandparents.

I've heard the same from other people. It can be very disappointing. But I'm sure that if you ever visit the area you will get a feel for what it was like in the past.

It might still be possible to find the cemetery, if it was in the countryside. But you would need the help of local people.

Are there any church records of your family ?

Love / Do Polish men like aggressive women? [26]

A "furry"? The word is "fury", my darling Polski. Unless you are referring to your "furry" gerbil self, as portrayed in your profile.

The comment about my spelling.... fair cop. But to call me a gerbil when I am plainly a mouse ......... outrageous !!!!

I keep joking with my wife and asking her when are we going to move in there lol Their family is also related to some Lithuanian Nobel family, but this needs a lot more research.

This brings up an interesting point. When I was in the UK a few weeks ago I visited a pub, that was once owned by Great-Great Grandfather. The pub still has some of the original tables and fittings. For me, this brings the past to life. To the present day landlords amusement I was able to tell him things about his pub. A pub I'd never seen before.

Go to the palace, soak up the atmosphere, take some photos and add your part to the family's history.

Feedback / What PolishForums Looked Like in the Early Days :) [11]

It might also be interesting to know if there is anyone who is a member here today who was a member back then but maybe under a different name or as a "guest"? :)

One of my first threads is dated May 06. I posted as guest and sometimes signed S in the beginning.
I remember checking this site when it was nothing. And at one time I was second top poster for the month with five posts.

so I'm going to see my lovely grand mother(Germans can be very arrogant at times) and "question" her with the great grand kids to soften her up :)

Sometimes it is a good idea to make some sort of presentation to soften them up. It can also help if you tell them something historical/good about the family that they didn't know. This will show how serious you are about your family history and how important it will be to future generations.

Re: Presentation.
I used enlarged copies of photos, biographies and extra info, like who was king or queen at the time.
If you are lucky Gran or whoever will take an interest and then start to correct your notes, without realizing what they're doing. Don't expect older folk to admit to a suicide or illigitimate birth in the family.

Very often they are hiding the things you least expect.

There is no best company.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

but there are many British tradesmen whose standards are just as low, if not lower, and people are employing them too.

Agreed. It's not a new problem by any means.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

i mean the failed electricians, builders etc the 'cowboys' who come here.

This is my point. You don't know who has formal training and who had on the job training from his mate. There are plenty people who after finishing university have spent time on British building sites.

I noticed that one of the adds on this site [PF] called for building personel.... with documentation.
Some companies are aware of their responsibility to the client. It seems that business is taking the lead rather than the government.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

I know tradesmen and I know a friend of mine had her heating put in by an engineer who was not registered, yes it was very cheap, but I think that's a stupid chance to take.

Registered Corgi or Polish equivalent have to sign something similar to a guarantee card.
If it's not signed by a qualified engineer, you are not insured. It would be wise to have any such appliance checked.

News / English vs. Polish hostility [323]

its just the ones who are bad and don't get the jobs in Poland may come here, lol :)

Young people with a student education are not tradesmen. They have seen a chance to earn money and learnt from others.

There are too few homegrown tradesmen now..

They are talking about this on Radio 4 at the moment.

Edit: it's just finished.

UK, Ireland / Where to find Polish people in London? [55]

u have something to do with this place? Comming from there?

I was born there.

Exeter is nice and it's not far from the sea. The countryside is different. They even have palm trees in that part of England.

Exeter is in the south west. Newcastle is in the north east.

Which area in london can you find most polish people? People say lots of polish people are coming to london from coaches at victoria coach station.

When I was there a couple of weeks ago I was amazed at the amount of Polish.
I was also amused that the no smoking signs are in English and Polish, but no other language.
