I do not know if Polish women are always so thrifty. It all depends. As they het used to the west and gain new values they can start to want the same if not more than English women. Also great memories can be a dangerous and annoying thing too because they will always repete and remind you of something said or done twenty years ago! Every time you have an argument they love to repete something-they will never allow you to forget. Starnge as when it is something bad of their making they will never let you know about it. I also see that you have an age difference of sixteen years. Remember too that Polish women are less mature than English women. If you are living together and ant to be together see what happens, after all, you have destroyed your marriage-I imagine for this new love in your life so you have to some extent burnt your bridges. It might be something to do with their education. I was in Poland once and went for a day trip across the border to the Czech Republic-totally different story! I think that Marek's remark was really about language difficulty and not really about number of native speakers. Obviously, English speakers outnumber Polish speakers but the question was about difficulty of grammar. Is French in second position? That might have been true a hundred years ago. The law may have changed now but I have written above soewhere that a few years ago I was in Poland in Czestochowa and I wanted to buy a piece of building land and I was told that without Polish nationality I had no rights to buy anything in Poland even though my wife is Polish. I could pay for it but the legality of the plot would be only my wife's. Now that Poland has joined the EU things should begin to change but you will still lose out as prices will have gone up so they will gain by selling to you at three times the price. I am not sure that you understand what it would be like to live in Poland on a £100 per month salary after you have been living in the west for most of your life. Why do we have 600,000 polish in England since the collapse of communism if life is so good in the east? To visit Poland on holiday is one thing but to live in a country where you pay for everything-remember there is a very limited wealfare system unlike in the U.K. ect. Children pay for all medicines not like in England where under 16's get in all for nothing.

I think that it should read dzis wieczorem. I have not seen dzis wieczor written like that but then again, I am not always right as has been shown on several occas.sions! Normally the time of day is in the instrumental case and not like the example above though.

Also it would be right to say ty mowisz nie zle po polsku-I am not sure if the above example is good Polish or not. Twoja znajomosc jezyka polskiego jest dobra would be better I hope. Is there a word in Polish inaczy? Inaczej wszysko jest w porzadku, or wszysko jest dobre. You will need to go through a grammar book and check it all out. I am no expert but some of your examples do look a little 'sus' to me.

The book by Alexander Schenker is a very good book with lots of good grammatical examples but yes, it is rather dated now. I think he wrote it around 1966-I have a copy at home with the tapes. He wrote it in the USA after giving lessons to students and he based the course around his lessons. You should be able to pick up a dictionary somewhere though, try a second hand book shop. When you write 'mam niejedno slownik', does that mean that you have one or not? Do not worry about your errors, I make them all the time-even in English and at the end of the day-so what? If you can write in Polish and someone can understand then that is all that can be expected of you. Writing in Polish is not going to increase your life expectancy by fifteen or twenty years so what the heck.

You are probably right, I was not sure and said so. However, it is a useful tool and is the only way somebody is ever going to get through the minefield of endings unless you have a fantastic memory. What lawyer remembers all legal cases or can any Englishma know all the words in a standard English dictionary? That is why we have books and an alphabet!

In fact it would be a total wast of time learning all Polish word endings-you could spend the time doing something else like learning another third language from scratch. Just sitting learning thoudands of stupid word endings is unlikely to enhance your career prospects very much.


I work with English native speakers who make mistakes all the time. As an example 'we was' and 'I aint got none' and in pronunciation too-another becomes 'anover' and brother becomes 'brover' there are lots more but I can not think of them now. Oh yes, I have a friend who was a student of German in Portsmouth when I was also at the polytechnic in the early 1980's and he once said about something which I can not recall now but he said 'it was more worser'. So the english do make dreadful mistakes in grammar and so on.

We seem to have got off the point here. If you are having problems with Polish endings you can buy an autobiographical dictionary (if I have spelled it right that is) look out for a slownik ortograficzny-it would be very usefull to you. They may be quite expensive as most dictionaries are but if you are in Poland or visit it sometimes you should be able to pick one up-failing that, -try e-bay or amazon-you never know...

I can not understand the Polish mentality. Capitalism is the very thing that Poland wanted. They want to be in the EU and why? Because as an agricultural country they will be getting the subsidies. Obviously Germany and France dominate the EU as the major players but that was what was expected. In England we have a Russian who has bought Chelsea Football Club and has 11 billion pounds to spare. Why should a Russian who lived in communism now have 11 million pounds when he just bought shares very cheaply-after all, he did not work with his hands for that money. This is capitalism and Poland wanted it. The alternative is Soviet communism so decide.

To buy property in Poland would have been better years ago-you could buy a real bargain. In Czestochowa, I was offered a huge detatched house (an old style) for less than 20,000 pounds but I think that these good old days are at an end. Like everything else the golden days come to an end. Too late now, try Romania or even Bulgaria. You could have bought land a long time ago as an investment and then have your own purpose built house made to your own specifications now. You should have thought about this six or seven years ago though...

I must agree that this attitude is very strange and one sided. I was a student in Moscow twenty years ago and there were 600 sudent teachers of Russian at the Pushkin Institute. The Poles never had a good word to say about the English and it was always 'our Churchill sold Poland to the Russians ect ect...'Now it is very different story. The Poles have come to England en mass and want to work and buy houses in the best parts of each town to guarantee that their children will be in the right catchment area for the best state schools. They know exactly how to 'work the system'. I was in Poland a few years ago just before Poland actually joined the EU and I was thinking about buying a small piece of land, maybe to build a house later on. Even though my wife and her family are Polish (her family lives in Czestochowa), I had no rights whatsoever-I had no right to buy as much as a garden shed as I had no Polish passport. If Poland wants to be so pure why do we have an estimated 600,000 Polish working here in England? There are also many in Ireland. It does seem to be a Polish characteristic-they always want to be on the winning side of an argument. They never take responsibility for anything as this Ola 23 suggests to be just the same as all the others I have met. Do what I say and not what I do scenario.
