Love / BLACK GUYS POLISH WOMEN [809]

Why is Hip-hop considered "Black culture" when 90% of it's audience is white?

Where did hip-hop/Rap originate? Yeah, many white people listen to some (including myself), but I still think we should recognize it's origination.

Is it a bad thing that it's considered "black culture"? It is successful and influential, no?

News / Why are foreigners coming to Poland and from which countries? [119]

do a lot of travelling and seldom meet Americans outside of the USA.

This is true. Some of us get out, but many are comfortable staying here. I think everyone should experience what's outside the US at least once. I always hear sth like "I have everything here, why would I leave"?

Hahaha, wait, you don't? ;) Shucks.....

I think people just don't know what to call anything anymore. I'm comfortable with my black friends, so we mess around a lot, but I think some people just don't know. I live in the NY area, so I was brought up with a mix of friends. White people get nervous to say the wrong thing....and I'm sure you notice this soimetimes.

Prob the stereotypical US "Hip hop" culture or African culture? Who knows.

.....they (some establishments) do classify it as "black music" in Poland :)

Travel / How Can I Not be the "Ugly American" Tourist in Poland? [97]

Guilty on all 3 counts. Yes, I still use the hip pack. Yes, I'm THAT old. Sigh. Hey, it's either that or stuff every pocket I have with my reading glasses, sun glasses, and assorted pocket stuff. Go ahead - make fun.

Get rid of it. Really ;) Pick up yourself a backpack

UK, Ireland / UK bus company boss jailed for hiring an incompetent Pole [71]

what exactly is this post trying to say.

It has no purpose...really. It's not news that UK employers are trying to save money and hiring people that shouldn't be driving. Nothing shocking here...he's just trying to take a popshot...

Love / Is it true Polish people don't move in together that quick? [27]

I know it isn't enough but why living the bad life when she can have paradise?

But, from her point of view; How is she positive the same thing won't happen.

I'd give her time...really. 4 mos is not enough time to really know someone.

Life / HeadShops in Warsaw? [22]

I'm just looking for a typical headshop, they usually have all sorts of things ranging from tobacco pipes to shot glasses to shirts, just random junk. All I've found in person are the cigar stores you find in the big malls. Those are too formal to be carrying what I'm looking for.

Honestly, I don't think you'll find a "visible" head shop. Bet bet may be to go to a Piotr i Pawel and take a look in their tobacco area. You may need to get to know someone better to find out where you can buy a pipe. Good luck with that.

I believe a chillum is different....sth that goes between your fingers and sucked through your partially closed fist. I used to work in a headshop here in the US. Was called "stoned Pieces" . It was in Woodstock, NY, but I think it's closed down since I've moved.

I think a headshop is a heqadshop...not to be confused with any other type of shop. Vfunk is spot on.

If you can't find one...use a potatoe or an apple :)

Travel / How Can I Not be the "Ugly American" Tourist in Poland? [97]

I don't know about the ball caps anymore...hip hop is big and I see a lot of these. I don't know anyone who wears a fanny bag anymore...more of an old folk or 80's thing.

I'm sorry, but the whole smiling thing has to go. I always see people in PL having a good time.

I'm bald

You won't be alone here. Many PL men are baled/shaved.

are there any customs regarding the removal of a hat for particular people or in certain places

Do the same as you would anywhere. Especially during meals IMO.

shaking hands customary? How should I expect to be greeted, and what would be an appropriate way for me to reciprocate

Shaking is normal and most likely, you'll be greeted with "Czesc" or "Dzien Dobry". Repeating the same would be ok if you can't speak Polish.

I've read some messages in this forum that seem to indicate that smiling too much may be viewed suspiciously - is that true?

If you're happy, smile. Don't hide it. I do hear 'fake' smile comments, but I wouldn't let that stop you from being yourself...really, don't even think about it.

I'd apprecaite any tips you'd care to convey.

Eat, drink and be merry :)
