It's certainly confusing for the novice.

It's not confusing at all. There are 2 ways to pronounce it, you can choose any of them, it doesn't matter.

Life / Surgery in Poland (varicose veins)...anyone with experience/advice? [18]

I spoke to the surgeon after my operation.He said the cause was ( explained in my none medical vocabulary !!) . That basically veins have valves, these get blocked which causes the vein to die due to lack of oxygen. Once dead they expand to over 100 / 150 size thier width and float to top of the skin / surface hence making them look worse than what they really are.

Something like that. And the dilation is usually use to decreased blood circulation because the muscles in the lower limbs don't press correctly on the vessels, to pump up the blood. That's why varicose veins usually occur in people who sit down a lot and don't use their lower limb muscles.

Of course this is the best. But first you must figure out what gender it is. And we usually do that by looking at the endings. So indirect we use endings to decline nouns anyway. But you are right.

Letters "ą" and "ę" are often ignored and replaced by "a" and "e".

Many people also pronounce ę as e if it's the last letter of a word.

Would it be too much of an oversimplification to say that nouns are generally declined according to their endings rather than their gender?

In many cases this will create problems.

Kolega is declined (in most cases) as a masculine noun. But if you decline according to ending, it looks like feminine gender and it will be wrong.

Noc is a feminine noun. But if you decline according to ending, it looks like masculine gender and it will be wrong.

Miłość is a feminine noun. But if you decline according to ending, it looks like masculine gender and it will be wrong.

I think we make it more difficult than it really is. Do it as usual, and it will be correct, we only have to learn a few exceptions.

Male gender nouns always require male gender adjectives regardless of ending

But be aware of the noun kolega in the dative case, here it will be declined as if it was a feminine gender noun (koledze). But the adjective will be declined as a masculine adjective.

My friend/colleague in dative case = mojemu (masc) koledze (fem)

Summary: Kolega will be declined as a masculine noun in all cases, except dative where it takes feminine noun ending. But any adjective associated with kolega will have masculine ending in the dative case.

Of course. The countryside and popular areas in Krakow or Warsaw are like different worlds.
It's a little different from some other countries where nice places on the countryside with some land cost a fortune.

Most young Poles today seem to have a rather natural relationship to sex. Not as many 'one night stands' as in Western Europe. But the majority don't mind having sex with their partner (bf/gf) before marriage. It's a good balance I think.

Actually no. It seems that the majority of Polish girls think it's natural to have sex if you have a stable relationship.

The ones who don't have sex before marriage are almost only for religious reasons. In my opinion there is not a culture among young Poles in general that you should wait until marriage. If we go to a country we must respect its culture.

To say that ć/ci, rz/ż, u/ó are different is pure phantasmagoria. Please do not believe people who say this, just take what all grammar books say about it for granted.

That is what I have seen also.

The pairs rz/ż, u/ó and ch/h were once pronounced differently and still are in certain dialects of Polish

By the way, today I saw that they were only selling 200 mg tabl. ibuprofen in the supermarket. Can't understand why, because the normal dose is 400 mg x 3 daily. Maybe they wanted people to take 2 tabl. x 3 daily, just to make more money. And "200 mg" was written with very small letters. Greedy bastards.

And generally the packs are smaller in Poland. They want you to buy several small packs instead of one bigger. Good in one way maybe, less amounts of drugs are wasted, good for nature.

Because it's vulgar. And the normal way to say "to kill somebody" is completely different, and has nothing to do with zajebać.

But it's important to remember that zajebisce/zajebisty can have a positive meaning, like in "zajebista piosenka" (fucking great song).

Zajebać and jebać are different words. But if you look at the verb (zajebać) corresponding to the adverb zajebiście (or adjective zajebisty), you see that the stem is the same as in jebać (fuck). This can be one of the reasons why you can translate for example zajebista piosenka as "fucking great song". But it's kind of vulgar.

It's well-know psychological knowledge that people who always need to tell how superior they are, are the ones with low self-esteem.

There are people in Poland (and in all countries) who think they are superior and better than everyone else. But there are also many Poles that underestimate themselves. This depends more on personality than nationality.

There is no one in Sweden that doesn't have any melodic intonation at all. It's always impossible to analyze your own dialect. Since you've been speaking it for all your life, it sounds different to you than to people from other places. (I'm also from the West coast)

This is not only Polish women, also many Polish men are like this. But in all countries women are usually more likely to go to the doctor and to take drugs.

Now you mention it, indeed, every PL girl I've known always had a truckload of medicins in her house.

As a medical student in Poland I can say that Poles often want a drug for every minor symptom they had for more than 24 hours. A generalization of course, but often true.

Many Polish doctors write prescriptions for drugs against selflimitining conditions where the drug will not help much anyway.

As I said before, there is a reason why there can one Apteka in almost every block.
