News / Lwow - Eaglets Cemetary [7]

I think the £yczakowski/Lychakivskiy Cemetery is divided into 2 sections: 1 for poles and 1 for ukrainians. The cemetary was neglected for some time during the cold war - i think the eagles cemetery was actually completely destroyed and the land was turned into some kind of storage area. I would imagine that the ukies visit the ukrainian part and the poles visit the polish graves - remember, poles and ukrainians have not always been friendly to one another.

Love / I need some advice about a Polish young lady. [21]

somehow got involved with the Jehovah's Witnesses.

They are controlling as you say, but they are also very relentless in their pursuit of new recruits into their church. I was hounded by a lady from this church for several months - she only stopped after i had called the police!!! I only talked to her when she came to my door (they door-door shop here in canada for new members) and i guess she must have misunderstood my desire to learn about the faith for actually wanting to join. Seems like your lady succumbed to this evil.

Some religions can be harmful. This particular faith/church wants full control of your life - everything from who you date/marry to how you spend you money to how you spend your free time. If you think the jehovas are negatively affecting her life, then you should help her out!

News / Poland embraces new effort to fight anti-Semitism [138]

This is a great initiative by the polish government. Hopefully they can expand this to include all visible minorities.

I also hope that Pole-hating jews like you, Harry, can sleep better at night now.

Love / Polish girls' obsession with marriage [124]

Olasz, I am not saying that Polish girls are useless. I'm not even saying that each and everyone of them is a gold digger. But many are, and they love to pounce on foreigners like a cat would pounce on a mouse. I travel to Poland often and i see how girls react to me and other foreigners. I know what people (esp. women) think about foreigners in poland (i speak polish). They are much more eager to start a relationship with a foriegn man than a native pole, and one of the major reasons for this is that a man from western europe/NA is more likely to give her a better life, financially speaking.

I am not personally affected by this (as you have suggested) as I have a canadian girlfriend.

Love / Polish girls' obsession with marriage [124]

So much pressure.It is unbelievable.

Do you blame them??? YOU are their free ticket out of Poland and into a "life of wealth!"

You are like a fish that has taken her bait. You are firmly hooked at the end of the line. She is reeling you in. She has a big smile on her face...

No use fighting it, southern:)

OMG there's a video of her on youtube!! I don't know who the guys helping her are though. Look at that smile!!

History / Did Ukraine really "steal" Polish land? [302]

ssc.com = skyscrapercity.com

There was a ukrainian canadian from saskatchewan by the name of nathan who posted in the ssc.com forums a couple of years ago when I used to browse the forums. He wrote a lot like you do here.

Going to visit Poland for long period of time - need passport?

Sounds like you have been living under a rock your whole life. Here is some reading material that should help you understand what passports and visas are:

Life / Moving back to Poland after 20 unhappy years in Canada and USA [70]

No offence pcanuck

None taken.

pick up dead-end jobs after graduating

Seanus, tell me what constitutes a dead-end job in Poland? What jobs do poles pick after graduation that you consider dead-end jobs?

Personally I would say that most jobs in Poland are dead-end jobs as the work environment there is simply disgusting. For instance, employers have no respect for their employees. There was a time just a couple of years ago where employers would fire people left and right for no reason - they especially enjoyed firing people just before their scheduled retirement. My uncle told me about a bank that created a 'contest' for new applicants where they had to devise a solution to an actual problem in the bank. The applicant with the best proposal would get the job. Seems nice and creative right? Wrong! It was a scam. The bank stole the best idea and gave all the applicants (including the 'winner') a kopa w dupe! WTF?? On top of all this, the salaries are piss poor. How the hell does one work in such an environment? To me, this fits the definition of a 'dead end job.'

From what i hear and see during my regular visits to PL, foreign companies provide the best options for fair employment. I'm sure things are improving now that poland is in the EU but there is still a lot of work to be done.

Life / Moving back to Poland after 20 unhappy years in Canada and USA [70]

Why did you leave it that long?

Some Poles (a small percentage) leave poland for the US (ie chicago) to work and save as much money as possible. They live in poor neighbourhoods and spend as little $ as possible on life's necessities (food, clothing, transportation, housing etc.). THey work jobs that require no education or skills - in other words, mind numbing back breaking physical labour. You can spot such people from a mile away as they often look physically exhausted, unhappy, aged and often complain about life in the US. They live and work like this for 15-25 years before returning to poland to retire.

I bet 'marysia' fits the above criteria. I cannot understand why these people give up the best years of their lives for .... WHAT??? They fail to see that a little investment in the form of a simple 1-2 year college diploma will not only provide them with a more respectable job but also one that pays more and above all makes them HAPPY.

News / Polish engineer beheaded in Pakistan. [347]

I am in similar shoes as that poor guy

Are you being held captive by radio-maryja religious extremists? Are they threatening to crucify you if pakistan doesn't meet their demands? Or maybe hang you by a rosary?

:D

The savagery and barbarity of your part of the world never ceases to amaze me, nrx. Sometimes it doesn't feel like we're living in the 21st century.

I hope they had the decency to anaesthetise him but I doubt it.

How naive of you to even think of this, seanus.

What a horrible death. I remember watching (well only a few seconds - i just couldn't finish it) the beheading of Daniel Pearl. Simply horrible.

History / Polish Anti-semitism - origins? [186]

It's quite interesting how jews are quick to blame others of anti semetism while they think of themselves as innocent little angels who were always the victims.

What about the polish-bolshevik war of 1919-1921 when the polish jews helped the russians identify (for the purpose of elimination) the polish intelligensia in the parts of poland that fell into russian hands in the beginning of the war???????????????? And everyone wonders why the incidents @ jedwabne, łomża etc. ocurred...

Although i strongly condemn this "eye for an eye" violence, it is the answer to the first poster's question. These were savage times involving very primitive people, i'm afraid.

BTW, how many threads do we need on this topic?

Ok the US has Heather Locklear but what does Canada have? Celine Dion? Come on now. I appreciate you playing the Devil's advocate but you've got to draw the line somewhere.

Oh god how I hate celebrities and hollywood.

I'm talking about average girls on the street, malls, work, bars, restaurants, hospitals, etc.

Language / Usage of the word "Na" [17]

there are a few geographic expeptions in Polish: na Węgry, Ukrainę, Litwę itp

Is there a reason for this exception? Does it have anything to do with the close historical conncetions between these countries and Poland?

Love / There are some good looking older chicks in Poland no? [25]

Wow, are you wearing your beer goggles? Few MILFs/older women look good in poland.

Face it guys, MILFs in canada/usa (not sure about w. europe) are many times more attractive then their polish counterparts. Too many polish women let themselves go because they think they're too old to took good.

Maybe these hotties you speak of only come out in the winter months, as i am only familiar with summer time in poland (i never go to poland in the winter). Or maybe you're much older than me, in the age group of these MILFs.

History / Poland and Lithuania [161]

Ok maybe not everyone, i guess i did exaggerate that i bit, but MANY understand and/or speak polish. I was there for only 3 days and couldn't help but notice how many lithuanians were able to communicate with our group in polish.

false ... most Poles were expeled from the East after WWII ...

True but many stayed. There were also some polish lanugage schools in wilno. There's quite a sizeable polish disapora in the city.

History / Poland and Lithuania [161]

I've been to wilno, lithuania once 2 years ago and found it to be very similar to poland - krakow in particular. There is a lot of evidence of polish culture/history in this city.

The people there HATE poles with a passion so much that i thought the waitresses spat into my food at the restaurant (mmmm i had this cold purple lithuanian soup, it was good). Apparently everyone speaks polish but nobody likes to admit it. My 1/2 polish 1/2 lithuanian tour guide also said this - makes sense since polish/russian were the only official languages in lithuania during the commie era. I started off by talking polish to the shop keepers/waiters/people on the streets, and although they all understood they were very rude - i quickly switched over to english and the people were much more friendly/open.

I've also noticed that poles see lithuanians as being polish "z dziadka na pra dziadka" (err something to that effect, i can't remember the exact phrase i've heard poles use).

History / Bielski Brothers - does anyone know the story? [38]

Does anyone know a less saintly story concerning this group?

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naliboki_massacre
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koniuchy_massacre

There seems to be quite a bit of controversy surrounding the bielski brothers, some say they were freedom fighters some say they were war criminals. I think it's safe to say that these allegations of (bielski) "war crimes" will never be proven.

On a side note, didn't one of the bielski brothers get arrested recently in the US for robbing an eldery woman of her savings??

Life / Do Poles accept people from the Polish diaspora as Poles? [14]

To be honest, I am very interested is seeing what the experience of "returning to the homeland" will be like. To be in a place where my name is "normal" and my religion is common. Wil I feel completely out of place as an English speaker or will I feel like I am among my own? I guess to a large extent that will be determined by the additudes of the people I meet. Which, I guess, is why I asked the question.

Well when i visit Poland my family and people that i meet for the first time always refer to me as being a "kanadyjczyk" (canadian).

Also, on my last trip to poland i watched a court tv program where a pole (who spent 2 years working in england) was on trial for a crime in poland. All members of the court as well as the witnesses referred to him as an "anglik" even though he was fluent in polish while his english was barely understandable (he threw in a few english words/phrases during the trial for some strange reason).

Don't be surprised if you don't feel "at home." Though this my change if you stay in the country for a longer period of time.

Law / Polish tradesmen: Be careful... some may cheat you.. [37]

haha Wroclaw Boy!!!!

It sounds like you been in Poland for quite some time and i believe you have a polish partner - you should have expected this, especially since you are a foreigner.

Next time have your in-laws do the ordering/dealing with "tradesmen."

Though i should add that tradesmen everywhere are not always honest (ie: car mechanics/used car salesmen).

Life / POLAND'S QUASI-BROTHELS? [21]

S tell me there are no brothels in Poland

Polish cities are littered with brothels. A couple of years ago when i was in poland, there was a police raid on a brothel in wroclaw. In the paper they said that brothels are quite common in poland and are usually disguised as bars/clubs. Others are hidden brothels (in apartment buildings) that only taxi drivers know about. In warsaw people put ads for these brothels on the windshields of cars. Sad.

According to the law sutenerstwo (pimping) and kuplerstwo (providing premsies) are illegal. Apparently the law often turns a blind eye to various things.

This is true. When my cousin worked as a cop in krakow in the 90's - early 00's, he said that the police would quite often turn a blind eye to these "businesses."

My mom used to make this for me when i was a child. It usually works if you have a minor cough, but doesn't work too well if you have an asthma cough or brochitis.
