News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

Southern will confirm that sclavus comes from sclabos (Greek word). Slavus (Latin for slave) was used in the 8th century in the Middle Ages. The Polish/Slavic root of that word came LONG before that.

Life / Are Polish traditions dissapearing [93]

Vodka is still being drunk and pickles eaten ;) More seriously, Wigilia is taken seriously with the passing out of opłatek. I think Poland honours its various traditions quite admirably.

History / The Battle of Vienna - Poland helped save Europe [57]

We should be glad that Himmler didn't take over. Hitler was already delusional and overstretched. Himmler may have had the cunning to pull off the vital victories needed, and then what?

Yeah, they are quite good at that. They never take the blame for any feck-ups, though. We saw a fairly strong army get trounced by the Nazis. Piłsudski laughed off Germany to his peril in 1935.

Nobody has really shown how Europe was saved, I'm not convinced so far.

Food / Is there McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc in Poland? Food survey. [222]

They have enchiladas for sure. I've been there with an American who has been all across the states. He rates the place pretty highly. It has all the standard stuff and a bit more.

Tortillas tend to be in the form of chips (AmE), sth like Doritos. Not the real deal! On second thoughts, I think the Mexican place has them. I might take my missus along tomorrow and find out.

Chuckecheese, that's a blast from the past. That was all the rage some time back. Cheese is the last thing I need right now, though. Gotta ca-canny on that.

There was a Mexican teacher here once, he prepared some amazing fajitos and burritos. Sth like samosas too.

Food / Is there McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc in Poland? Food survey. [222]

There is a Mexican place here, I hope it's still in business. Gonna have to pop along and see. I have nothing to compare it with, though. Not a patch on places in America, I'd guess. Still, it tastes good to me.

It wouldn't surprise me if it went bust some time ago due to the lack of experimentation amongst Poles.

You went to a Pizza Hut just last year, sledz? ;) ;) Just kidding, good to have your input on these threads.

1) No denial here. But admitting the existence of sth doesn't translate to spurious claims about its historical origins.

2) Polish, ok

3) You recall well. Tori is hiragana (sorry, no Japanese syllabaries on my PC). Chikinu is katakana. Both mean chicken (tori means bird but is used for chicken too)

Travel / Question about Wizz air flights to Katowice/Kraków... [20]

Krakow has its own airport(s). I know Balice. The nearest city is Katowice. Most airports are at least a few kilometres out of the city. It is misleading to lump in Krakow there but it'll get more sales as it's showing the relative proximity of the two cities. It's not that far from Pyrzowice to Kraków, in relative terms.

Travel / Gdansk - need some information about it [21]

It's in the north of Poland ;) ;)

Just kidding. It was a Hanseatic city, formerly called Danzig. It was founded in 966 I think and a Czech bishop was an important visitor. Their rivals are Arka Gdynia.

Work / The Callan Teaching Method...... in Poland [11]

They over-stress speed at the expense of methodical and progressive learning. Teachers were encouraged to blast through the material without really taking the time to systematically explain it.

One thing which is good about the method is the shortcuts. I have many ways in which I present an idea using letters and a piece of paper. My experience makes teaching grammar a piece of cake. S V O and I'm off :)

Work / The Callan Teaching Method...... in Poland [11]

It's a parrot method which doesn't make for a good rational discussion or debate on anything meaningful. It's like classroom ping pong which doesn't tease out many of the things required to be an effective communicator.

Work / The Callan Teaching Method...... in Poland [11]

Don't be conned by labels, M-G. That's their slogan but I'm ever more sceptical of propaganda. Writing skills are virtually non existent. 5 minute dictations of pure drivel. It's all about speaking.

Work / The Callan Teaching Method...... in Poland [11]

I was a trainer in the method and can say that it is boring at times. It's fun in that it's interactive and you are always on your toes. It's mind-numbing in that it's pre-prepared material with no real scope for innovation of any note. It's particularly effective in the first four stages where tempo is key. They must feel the melody of the question. After stage 6, it fizzles out into questions of little relevance in the real world. Stages 5 and 6 are heavily grammar based.

Any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask

News / Should Poland let in refugees from USA ? [80]

Then explain the great vowel shift, geniuses. Why is it SlAvic and not slave-ic? Show me some proof that the Romans were involved.

Why did the Romans, using Latin, use a Germanic word in slave to describe Polish/Slavic tribes? It's like a Scottish guy using a Japanese word to describe a Pole. Boku ha Porando jin desu, LOL

UK, Ireland / British news: The Poles might be leaving but the prejudice remains [52]

I really don't take much of an active interest in such things these days so my knowledge is likely rusty. I meant that, although I post a lot here, I'm not really overly communicative in real life. I do my job as a teacher but I'm more of a facilitator now. I value my alone time more and more.

However, szkotja2007, look above. You will see that national sovereignty is 'absolute'. We know that there are areas that the EU doesn't regulate which gives the character of the remnants of sovereignty. Don't be fooled!

Hmm...I think I should take October off the forum. I wouldn't want to give the wrong impression.

this refers to my point but not M-G's, Mr Grunwald.

You also have to ask yourself why most other nations have nothing akin to Niemcy.

OK, I respect that. I just feel that the minor states will be ever more trampled on and brought into line with the vision of the ruling elite. They will have to be ever more congruent and complicit. Even Poland saw a dilution in its power, a fact which prompted Lech Wałęsa to go to Ireland.

spectrezine.org/europe/Coughlan.htm here's a good paper for you. I could challenge some of its validity but it contains quite a few truisms.

Your definition of sovereignty is awry and wide of the mark. I haven't drunk vodka for a long time and I've only had 2 beers in the last 2 weeks, neither of which were drunk tonight.

Maybe quote some provisions of the Lisbon Treaty to present your case!? ;)

UK, Ireland / British news: The Poles might be leaving but the prejudice remains [52]

'The supreme, absolute, and uncontrollable power by which an independent state is governed and from which all specific political powers are derived; the intentional independence of a state, combined with the right and power of regulating its internal affairs without foreign interference.'

RN, the EU is not foreign interference? Who are you trying to kid? They encroach on many aspects of life. They are bureaucrats who even tried to regulate the length of Polish pickles/gherkins. Their tentacles reach into all manner of places. Go and do your research on EU Regulations, Directives and even Decisions which are binding. I am an EU Law major/master by title, I know my stuff.
