Life / Polish denial of reality - is it a national trade? [117]

I agree, the visitors who go to Poland see it differently than the Poles living there.
Same with Poles coming to the US. They have this image of money everywhere, but in reality you have to work very hard, pay taxes and soon realize life in the US is not as easy as they originally thought.

So if a person goes to Poland and stays there longer, then he will see it's not like he first imagined it also.
It's whatever you want to see.

Life / Moving a family to Poland, any info, advice needed [51]

Sometimes it's good to go there for vacation and check things out at first before sell everything and move. It could be hard at first, people in Poland are not as honest as in the US or Canada, you have to watch out what kind of car they sell you. It will look good but there will be something wrong and they won't tell you.

Also bribes are very common.

Life / Easter presents for Polish people? [14]

It's neat to give presents on any little occassion.
But like Grzegorz said, it's not really a tradition in Poland to do so, but there are no rules against it either. Get a big egg and put something neat inside.

News / Man from Zakopane who cut off his own genitals [53]

No, not that. Just don't want to be without one. As a joke.
And it's not common to do it anywhere, as it hurts like he^^!!!

News / Man from Zakopane who cut off his own genitals [53]

Yes, it was on Polish TV. The guy had 6 hours to be able to sew it back on, but the ambulance didn't make it in time, since there was only one hospital that would do it.

There was a woman in the US who cut her husband's love muscle off because he was cheating on her. His name was Bobbit. So now people are afraid to get Bobbitized.

Food / A yeast based dough with almond paste? [7]

This probably ain't it . Called Marcepan (Marzipan)

1 lb blanched almonds, finely ground
1 lb powdered sugar (confectioner's sugar)
2 Tbsp orange water or rose water (Can be obtained from your local drugstore)
food colouring and decorations
1
Combine ground almonds, sugar and flavouring in a saucepan. Cook until mixture leaves side of pan.
2
Roll almond mixture on a flat surface to a 1/2-inch (1-cm) thickness. Cut into shapes, mold, paint with food colouring, decorate, etc.
3
Place on wax paper to dry for 2 hours.

Love / Polish Girl and American Guy? [33]

there was too big of a cultural difference for her

yes, sometimes that can be an obstacle and so could the language barrier. But if you are compatible with one another, those can be overcome and if your love is strong enough. And sometimes it's great at first, everything is new and wonderful, but after a while you want to go back to your own country as the newness wears out.

Everybody is different.
It's up to you if you want this relationship working or not.

Work / Job opportunities in Poland for a foreigner? (other than a teacher) [175]

we have plumbers who come to our homes and charge £80 call out fee to change a washer on a tap! No such chance of this in Poland.

How true!
The same in the US. Plumbers and electricians have one of the better paying jobs. So one would not do good in Poland.
So the only job in the whole world for an American in Poland is teaching english. :)

Life / Real life of a Polish (the Great Woman, or even the Humble Man) :) [20]

I think the same way like Lonestranger. That's how it should ideally be, not living together until you get married, until it's official and then as a reward move in togther and have fun!! (And then realize the thing doesn't fit...:) hahahahahahaha)

But with today's economy, it's sometimes more profitable and affordable to live together before signing the contract.
