Love / Polish Girlfriend obsessive and not trusting [59]

"I have been married for 17yrs."

"I have been married since (May) 1990"

Both sentences use Present Perfect. ... (form some time in the past, until the present)

For + length of time.

Since the start of the period.

Hope this helps.

Life / Polish Train Travel - Scary? [101]

Do you mean this:

People do get robbed. There is no doubt about it, but it is not on every journey.

If so, I stand by this comment.

Polish Train Travel - Scary?

A first time traveler on Polish trains is always warned by friends to be on the look out.

People do get robbed. There is no doubt about it, but it is not on every journey.

Take normal precautions and you'll be OK......... Don't fall into a deep sleep.

More and more trains have open carriages rather than compartments, whch makes things safer.

Be as aware on crowded trains... as you would be in any crowd.

UK, Ireland / Enquiry from The Sunday Times Newspaper (changing Polish names in the UK) [4]

I write for The Sunday Times newspaper and have heard some Polish people coming to work here in the UK have changed their name as they think it can make life easier while they are here.

It might be easier to go to the relevant thread about changing names.

Life / Horticulture in Poland [63]

I believe there is a very old Oak tree in Poland which is famous for being a really old Oak tree.

The oldest tree in Wroclaw has been given a name and is located on park maps.

Wroclaw: The greenest city in Poland.

Did you notice that some people in Poland would have a beautiful view from their windows, if they didn't surround their house with tall trees. This is especially noticable in the countryside.

Life / Horticulture in Poland [63]

I might have to look that up

In one day you could visit:
The Botanical Gardens. Enjoying the plants would take a couple of hours or more.
The Japanese Gardens, which are actually quite small, would only need an hour or so.
The park around the Japanese Gardens is full of trees. Fir, Oak and others.

The above are in the same location as other important tourist sites.

Are there any good botanical gardens in Poland - you know the sort of thing - nice trees, interesting shrubs, glasshouses full of greenery.

Wroclaw's 100yr old Botanical Gardens are a nice place to visit.

UK, Ireland / Babies of Polish couples born in England [25]

Sorry in advance if there has already been a topic on this! I have searched but couldn't find anything...

This probably fits the rules for Naturalization... 6yrs

Google: british citizenship requirements... and see what comes up.

The baby would be able to travel on a Polish passport and still claim British nationality... up to a certain point... I think.

Life / Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland [235]

Poles rely on driving skills and common sense.

Not a good idea when you have two tons of car and no experience.

As said before: Polish folk don't have a tradition of the road.

Also, we are now seeing better roads and more road signs, which means someone has realized that there is a problem. Tougher police actions would also help, as well as public information in the media. Drivers have to be made aware that they are the cause of their own problems, in some cases.

Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland

This can and does happen. The solution is to keep your mouth shut and have a Polish partner negotiate for you. When the client realizes where the money is coming from, he will wise up.

Or, you could make yourself familiar with 'the Polish way' before you start.

Queues:
Queues can be as bad in Poland as much as they can be elsewhere. The answer is to get there early and 'go with the flow'. Don't feel singled out. If there is any pushing, and I know there always is, You don't have to be a Brit to get elbowed.

I will say that a lot of the frustration is not caused by the people in the queue, but by the organization that caused the queue. A lot more could be done in Poland to improve customer relations. And yes, we have discussed this before.

Life / New Polish I.D. card. [Dowód Osobisty] - big fine if you don't apply [55]

Does anyone know?

Nothing is clear on this thread. Even what is on the news is vague.

If you live in London you don't need a Polish ID... I think.

The problem with the new ID is that if you want something in Poland, like credit, you will need the new card.

It seems that the stories about the huge fine are rubbish.

If you are not sure about anything, give the Polish Embassy a call.

living relatives

nasza klasa.pl

This is a very popular schools website, like Friends Reunited, but a thousand times better. People of all ages use it.

You have to join though and that might be a problem.

If you ask... someone might do a quick look-up for you.

continuing the search I guess.

Again, find a friend in the locality and ask them to help. You never know !

Find a message board for the nearest city or town and post a message.

What do you have regarding your Grandmother ?

Date of birth ? Baptism ? Marriage ? Details of people with the same family name ?

Or did you just look at some documents. ?

UK, Ireland / polish identity card and work in england [15]

I have a similar problem on some of these threads. I feel sure that the forum collective will put us right in the morning. :)

Krzysztof,

I think we are a little mixed up here. Your signature is already on the the card when you get it. It's just that you have to show your old ID to get the new one and sign yet another piece of paper.

It might be possible for people abroad to make some arrangement, but I would think that it would be through the Embassy. I really have no idea.

Genealogy / I got the immigration records for my Polish great grandfather. Now what? [4]

I see alot of people who have access to Poland records.

This is not so. But we might be able to help in other ways.

Do you know your Grandfather's city of birth and date of birth ?
Was he married in Poland ?
Do you know his full name ?
What religion was he ?

Have you checked his Naturalization Records ?
If he was married in your country. Do you have a marriage certificate ?
Did he serve in the armed forces of your country ? If so, check military records.
Did he leave a last will and testament ?

Your aim will be to find church records. We might be able to find the church.

Genealogy / BULINDA / BULANDA [3]

Hi Kelly,

We need some dates.

Where do you think the family came from... which city ?

You can do a name check at: JewishGen.org

Do a quick check of Polish history at wikipedia. It will help you to understand the changing borders at certain times in your family history.

so the ID card could be sent on to your friend from Poland by post.

I doubt that. You have to sign for it to receive it
