Food / Help with baking ingrediants. [18]

lots of my recipes use it ... :)
but then again i'm struggling with a mixture of Irish, English and Canadian recipe books and it's a mystical world out there with milk vs buttermilk (not to mention stick vs oz, cup vs ml ... )

with regard to supplies of Cream of Tartar, Sodium Bicarb and Baking Powder I'm afraid I stock up on the white powders every time I go home (to the UK) and hope to goodness nothing bursts and spills as I go through baggage control.

just to let you know we (Trojmiasto) had a good foot of snow this morning - more forecast for tomorrow and Friday. Total paralysis of the traffic flow of course ....

Life / Good Garden Center in TriCity? [3]

I had pleasant customer service from that garden centre you can see from the Obwodnica between the IKEA and Osowa roundabouts. Have never bought anything there - just had questions about what would grow and what wouldn't. The lady was very helpful - even to the extent of ignoring her colleague who wondered out loud why she was giving me help when I obviously wasn't buying :)

There's a place past Weherowo on the way north ... for the life of me I can't remember the name now, but I know we always drive past it on the way to Debki ...

And memories of some place past Bojano, also on the way north.

i'm obviously a hot spot for vague information. ... apologies ... I haven't been buying in these places mostly because it would be like throwing an alcoholic into an off-licence

are you sheltered or wind-swept (we're the latter)

/addition

This is the first place I mentioned

kubscy.com.pl

You can see it between Osowa and the Selgros roundabout (on the Osowa side of the road)

If you want to buy lots of trees - consider the forestry place, again accessed from the Osowa roundabout. We bought stuff there about 3 years ago - some worked, some didn't (the spruce were ok, about 20% of the larch didn't have good root systems). They were useful for hedging sprigs.

Life / Angina, Polish resources needed [27]

which angina are we talking about?
it's the word for 'sore throat' here in Poland :) [yes, I lived through being told my 3 y/old had it ...]

Study / AGH Studying (Computer Science) in Poland [20]

Why study in Poland?
And why a Bachelors? I ask that because in my experience in Poland everyone (but everyone) seems to have a Magister (which I understand to be 'masters' level). Very hung up on titles they are ... and that includes the name by which one calls oneself ...

Life / School for 6 year olds an obligation in Poland soon? [19]

From what I understand, the idea is that attendance at *pre-school* will be required for 6 y/olds.

I think it's a good idea.
Notalotta learning happens in this class (from my memory), but at least it introduces the idea of "sit here and be quiet" :)

When my daughter entered K1 some of the children in her class were less than 6 months short of their 8th birthday and had never been in a school environment before. To say it was difficult to hold their attention would be an understatement ...

Life / School holidays in Poland - do 'half term hols' exist? [10]

It's evil :)
It's not a fixed 2 week period - last year my daughter was off in the middle of February, but this year the region was back 'at the beginning' again i.e. 2 weeks in the middle of January (just 7 days after the schools had gone back after the christmas break).

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

lurching back to the topic.

NaN 2 and Real
about 12.50pln for the 350g box
comes in the iron-enriched version too.

Nestle seems to have a comfortable foothold in the country's supermarkets...

any other info you want feel free to PM me.

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

no, I can't take that one as a joke. and neither will anyone who has ever been involved with the topic. it's not a 'safe' topic for joking about, trust me on that one.

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

i used to get it in the Geant at the top of Spacerowa - the place is "Real" now.
The Real website only lists Bebiko but I don't know what the shelves actually carry ... surely more than 1 brand ... I'll be there at the weekend and will try to have a look.

Do you have a car? Tesco, Real, Carrefour and Auchan are all within driving distance (if you're desperate enough) so, as long as the stuff is (still) available in the country, it should be possible to track it down somewhere... (famous last words in this place :) ).

News / Undertakers in Lodz :( [24]

on the other hand, there was this ...

news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1301702,00.html

which I know is nothing to do with Poland, I merely offer to suggest that other countries have their own issues ...

Life / Local Poles taking advantage of foreigners living in Poland [235]

I flew from Belfast International at the end of January and yes, there was a similar stampede at the Gate.
however ...
once I told the getting-increasingly-irritated attendant how to screech "A" the Polish way, some of the crowd did back off a bit. She was getting nowhere using an English 'A' to identify priority boarders.

She was very capable actually - refushed to open the door and pushed her way down through the crowd to drag forward families with young kids etc.

i put it down to poor English skills plus panic about not getting A Seat
and a dash of Every Man For Himself.
On the stairs/walk to the aircraft you need to make yourself (or your group) as *wide* as possible to prevent the Run Down From Behind effect. ...

(on reflection I'd rather put up with a bit of "elbows wide, boys and girls" than have to go through Copenhagen and England to get back to NI)

Life / The price of infant milk powder NaN in Poland? [12]

would this link help?

vitamarket.pl/sklep/k181-Zywnosc-dla-dzieci.html

p.s. my experience is that it's commonly available. that link might not represent the 'lowest possible price' e.g. i think i've seen it in biedronka ...

Life / FLY TIPPING HOUSEHOLD RUBBISH!! [11]

ever go visiting and watch what goes into the stove in the corner??
on our last visit it was the plastic coca cola bottles ... not sure if that's better or worse than fly-tipping, but the family sure as h won't (can't) pay for refuse collection..

Life / BRITS Expats in Poland ARE YOU MISSING ENGLISH FOOD? [48]

Heinz Baked beans? I can get them in Real any day of the week ...

but mince pies? ...ooow...

and christmas pudding with double cream ...

or chipolatas wrapped in streaky bacon ....

my mum swears she sent me a christmas cake (good old Lakeland ...) but, alas, nothing so far ...

Study / Lanuage school in Tri-City - advice learning Polish in Poland [12]

bis-gdansk.pl

gosh :D

p.s.
Szkoła Podstawowa Nr 69
im. Gen. Stanisława Sosabowskiego
seems to share the same address

p.p.s
if you go to google maps and type in "Gdansk Zielony Trójkąt" you should get an idea of where it is. the short story could be "down behind the Opera House". longer study of the area would suggest it's a bit run-down (fwiw). If anyone suggested I would have to get there from Gdynia of a morning I'd say "no" :D [think Trojmiasto, think gridlock]

/cj (finding this more fun than what she's meant to be doing ...)

I guess you're looking for this place ...?...

americanschool.pl/historia_us.htm

I can't give you much info about the quality of the teaching - we live in the TriCity area but our kids go to local schools.

When are you arriving?

Life / Queuing and Polish people [49]

Not everyone jumps the queue, but the comment above about drivers jumping queues is true. Only today I watched as a car mounted the pavement, drove forward and then joined the line of cars again. It was a sort of 'road rage' as there was a massive traffic jam at the time

I've seen a bendy-bus do the same :D
(and yes, it was scary)

Life / Queuing and Polish people [49]

oh yes .... all sounds very (horribly) familiar
you need to give up any idea of "personal space, do not enter here" when queueing in Poland - otherwise there will be another warm human body in it before you can breathe deeply.

UK, Ireland / Setting up shop, a N Ireland Polish migrant experience. [28]

there. i knew that smooth concerned exterior would crack given enough bytes.

biscuits are not bloody biscuits if they have chocolate on them. And maybe toffee too. Or orange flavoured cream. Or maybe peppermint? Or ../slap/

If anything comes to me I'll scream - otherwise i can survive with Delicje and Jezyki ...

O'Roartys/Donnellys ... mmmm ...
'fraid you're on the other side of The Great Divide ... let me just gently murmur Collegiate and all will be clear.
but i said goodbye and thanks for all the fish many many years ago.

seepage? i think we're talking blowout. Get me in Dunnes in the chocolate biscuit aisle and bad things happen...

careful ... your nice side will explode soon ...
s'ok, though -- I've been gone over 10 years from NI and I've learned to live without lots of things -- put another way ... the floodgates have been hammered shut and I daren't open them even a crack ...

Old Rossorry ....
