Language / The sound of the Polish 'R' [33]

paczka wrote:
How do you say Romania???

Lomania?

Well, some Polish people can't say "R"either, in their case it sounds more like "£" (like in was).
So Romania sounds like £omania (with a tiny bit of R sound to it)

Language / Saying the year 2000 [8]

"wydarzylo sie na przelomie"

I can't find her original post but I think that, normally, the above phrase is used when time (years) is not specified (e.g. nineties, eighties, on the turn of the 20th century).

If years are specified eg. between 1984 and 1994 I would rather use "pomiędzy”
If something happened in 1984 eg. "It happened in 1984" then I would say "to wydarzyło się w 1984"
but if something was happening throughout (repeatedly) 1984 then, I think, you can say "wydarzylo sie na przelomie 1984"

Food / Typical Polish Diet [22]

Polish Easter Egg Soup

I pound bacon
3 dozen large hardboiled eggs, sliced
1 pound polish sausage, sliced
1 pound ham, cubed
water
Garnish: fresh grated horseradish (if you don't like horseradish, you can substitute tabasco sauce)
Fry the bacon and cut it into 1-inch pieces. Slice the eggs and sausage. Cut up the ham into ½-inch cubes. Put everything into a large pot and cover with hot water. Bring to a boil. Simmer until the egg yolks are well dissolved. Serve with horseradish to suit your taste.

Poppy seed stollen

or Makowiec (in Polish) you can find here

Genealogy / Anyone know of Zigmont/Zygmunt Michalski from near or around Lembork or Łeba Poland. [3]

Lembork or Leba Poland

Proper spelling is Lębork and £eba (both relatively close to Słupsk, North of Poland).
Last name Michalski is very popular in Poland (over 51K Poles with that name).
In pomorskie province, where Lębork and £eba are located, there are 3-5k Michalski's.
With any luck some of them might be relatives of Zigmont/Zygmunt Michalski
