News / "We buy out Poland, Hungary, and Romania!" - the President of Israel [74]

The Jews can do what they want with their money

In principle I agree, but there is a catch. A lot of money that Jews have is in the hands of the wrong Jews. Most of the reparation money from Germany and other countries was never seen by those on whose behalf it was paid out.

Life / Anti-spanking law in Poland? [76]

I certainly do not think I was abused and I dont see anything wrong in smacking a child

Agreed. Nothing wrong with mild spanking if the kid is way too spunky.

USA, Canada / Gas prices in America [127]

I paid $3.99 per gallon today. The average price I had seen this weekend was $4.27 per gallon.

Someone posted a report on their visit to Poland - over $9 a gallon. That's where it;s all heading. All those SUV drivers will need to look into geting a Yaris ;)

The site says "The US Government's Secret Colorado Oil Discovery" and yet the secret is there for the whole world to see.

Nice site. Are they some of those who try to plug my email box with viagra ads?

Life / Anti-spanking law in Poland? [76]

I have brothers who didn't turn out the same as me!

So in other words, there is not conclusive evidence that spanking works, nor that it doesn't.

It can work. I just don't find the need for using it.

OK, that sound's reasonable.

Life / Anti-spanking law in Poland? [76]

But both hairball and myself have let it be known that we were either spanked or were punished at school.

Both of you were spanked.
Both turned out OK therefore spanking doesn't work.

Where's the logic?

If I was walking down the street and I saw someone "smacking" a child, and I took it apon myself to "smack" said someone. I could rightly be prosecuted for assault!

If you were walking down the street and you saw a woman kissing someone, and you took it upon yourself to kiss said woman, you could also be prosecuted for assault!

a child can NEVER "duly deserve" to be assalted by an adult!

And, of course, you know all kids, huh?
With some kids only a full scale assault by SWAT teams is the only chance to put them in line ;)

Btw. spanking of kids (within reason) is legit in Canada. They upheld he law about a year or so ago.

We banned physical punishment on criminals because it was wrong and didn't work.

What makes you think the psychological punishment would work?

Love / My polish g/f can be a nightmare,is it always like this [262]

Really, I think that there is a world of difference from the way we dress, to the way we treat our men :)

Tamara, if you are using this thread's originator as the basis for generalizing then you're quite a bit off track.

btw. dressing is superficial - I had bigger things in mind. I don't really care much about clothing and what I wear to work is what work requires me to wear. Although I do notice that what wifey and I wear after work here we would never dare to wear in Poland.

Would you care to elaborate on the differences you notice?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with weak.

wrong choice of words on my part.

The tradition in the US used to be one of the woman takes care of the house and husband (every see any of those old TV shows from the 50's and early 60's) and the husband brings home the "bread".

That was the tradition in most countries, although in Poland it seems women became a mores substantial part of the workforce sooner than in the US.

Then everything changed and now the woman doesn't want to seem to "cater" to her man and she can provide for herself - thank you very much

Catering might be the right word, and I see nothing wrong with it, if it's mutual. Sometimes sharing the same chores of the day, other times dividing them somewhat fairly.

In reality I don't think there is so much difference between a Polish and an American woman. Perhaps the difference is between American and Polish man. Neither is better or worse than the other. They cope the best way they can ;)

Btw, the original poster's relationship is blatantly dysfunctional .

Perhaps in Poland they don;t notice that since the circumstance of most is is the same :)

Still, I don;t think an American woman is such a weak person. After over 20 years on this continent I have seen this and that. One of the the most obvious signs are commercials. A silly, half brained husband and a smart, resolute and always right wife.

.if i try and stand up for myself i get the old "we are spliting up" routine.

You have taken all the reasonable steps to make her happy. Now she's playing the emotional blackmail.

Let the routine take that one step you think you don't want it to take - leave or let her go. If she's back things will be little more normal. If she isn't then better now than later when you have wasted years of your life. In a word be all that you can be... oops, wrong commercial. Be a man ;)

Who's saying abuse is OK?
There are divorces in Poland too, and men abuse women also.

It must be a difference in cultural background. I don's think most men in Poland would identify themselves as victims/slaves/prisoners of their wives.

I am a Polish fella and I don;t see anything wrong with that. (of course :)

I read somewhere an analysis explaining the relationships in a typical and functional Polish family. In short, it has to do with Poland's history through the ages. A woman's role at home was usually far greater than in many other countries. Men were busy outside their homes either chasing the enemy, or escaping from it.

quite frankly I don't know why some of the guys put up with it.

Not just Polish men.

There is a saying in Poland:

The husband in the head of the family. The woman is the neck that turns the head.

UK, Ireland / Anti-Polish sentiment of England [253]

In General Poles consider German to be harsh and machine gun like, but I actually like the sound of the language and it sounds pretty soft to me.

As someone mentioned before, English sounds like someone talking with a hot potato in his mouth.

We thought they poked fun at us with their funny accent and all.

News / France to lift job restrictions on Poles [84]

Russia, which had, after all, given so much that Poland could live in Socialist peace and freedom

Poles appreciated that giving so much that many risked their lives to stop the avalanche of gifts - going from Poland to Russia.

Poland voted for socialism after all the horrors of World War 2.

If you refer to the "3 Razy Tak" vote then you must know that the results were falsified. Poland was occupied by the USSR until 1989.

News / Polish teachers on Strike. [62]

Young people do not spend time abroad teaching English in the hope that they are going to make millions

Millions of young people around the world choose their education based on what they consider is good for them. Making a pile of doe is not necessarily everybody's dream. We all need to go through life paying bills and such, but if someone, like you, considers a 5 bedroom house an achievement bigger than becoming a good teacher (even if working for little money) then you are a very sad individual.

When you die all that will be left after you is a structure that will eventually become a pile of construction debris. That and some incorrect translations on this forum.

Teachers hope to leave much more than that.

Language / Capitalization of Cie, Ciebie, and others [17]

You capitalise these words when you care about/like/respect the person you're writing to. Usually in personal letters.

This is correct, although you will find capitalized pronouns in official publications where they address specific audience.

The rules have more to do with culture than grammar. Indeed, capitalized Ty, Wy etc. will express the respect we may feel towards someone, but sometimes it will also reflect on us.

do with chicken.

So you live in houses, and eat food made by slaves?

They pay low 1000 and less dollars a months. I always made at

This is what I paid weekly to construction workers in late 80's.

I have PhD.

And yet you are more stupid than allowed by law and tried to cross international borders without proper travel documents, based on an article in a newspaper.

Come on Darius, that's the best time.

Debatable, but I concede that you may have a good point too.

Darius, u teach what u r told to teach. I guarantee u

I agree but that is a different story. Educational system has always been a reflection of the current times. Whether successfully so, is another matter.

News / Poles learning from the British? [42]

OK, you'rew my kind of guy then. We should get together for a cup of good tea sometime. A beer or 10 wouldn't hurt either, although the danger is that after a few even sheep start looking good.

News / Polish teachers on Strike. [62]

I sympathise with the teachers, but aren't they kinda showing they don't deserve the raise yet. The reason is their lack of critical thinking, no imagination and certainly no signs of good strategy.

Who in their right mind goes on strike just a few weeks before their services are not needed for 2 or 3 months to come?

If I were a teach in Poland I'd rather bite he bullet till September, and go on strike then.

My personal viewpoint is that the cheaper teas should be drunk with milk.

Why drink cheap tea, instead of decent kind, and then increase the cost anyway by adding milk to it?

Language / I know Russian language - will it help me learn Polish? [105]

I tried to speak Russian in Poland years ago and they 9the Poles) were very helpful but it was pointless trying to get them to understand anything.

See? You should have studied Russian harder than you did.
