News / Absolutely balanced vision of Russo-Polish affairs (in Russian) [39]

So you are for total confrontation?

See? This is what confirms my feelings about Russians. You asked me a question. I provided an answer. And you treat this as a suggestion there should be some kind of confrontation?

What is there to confront other than truth?

So who changed the title of this thread?

But I am asking you about some false interpretations of Russian actions in Polish press. Do they really take place or not, I think they do.

I think there is some over zealousness on the part of some Poles (including this forum) in how they approach Russian reactions to some current and historic matters, but it seldom matches the vigor with which Russian politicians and propaganda just refuse to admit that in fact Russia was an aggressor in Poland, No matter how you slice it and what legal lingo you use, and whether you consider Poles good or bad, nice or nasty, smart or stupid, Russians committed war crimes against Poland's population.

In truth, this is similar to some Polish attitudes towards, say Ukrainians. Poland did rule the lands of this neighboring nation for quite some time, but when Ukrainians got pizzed off and went on killing rampages a few times then some Poles cried foul. A few still do.

AAAAnd? Your opinion

A big pile of the usual garbage of a fella who needs to write a column for a paper. After all he needs to make a living somehow.

An example:

It's true that Russians have a mistaken idea about history, much like Poles, but at least they (RUssians) falsify history to their own benefit.

What kind of statement is that? That guy is an academic? Don't some Poles falsify history in the exact same manner? Am I wrong, or is this guy serious by commanding Russians for lying in a manner that is acceptable to him?

or this one:

They don't glorify their defeats, nor do they erect monuments to those who lost

Of course that is a lie too. They did lose in early WW2 by being swindled by Hitler and Co. That was a huge defeat in their military intelligence and political insight. And then they erected gobs of humongous monuments to the fallen, including those they killed themselves.

Heck, they even glorify their own weakness by establishing an anniversary of 1612 as their national holiday to honor a defeat of an insignificant group of drunken Poles who thought they could rule Moscow. How desperate, or hateful does one have to be to make that little bump in the history of a nation a major holiday?

Meanwhile they neglect to celebrate their newly found freedom after centuries of being screwed by herds of Mongols and the like.

What is the title of the article in English?

Поляки - как из Достоевского means Poles just like from/in Dotoyevski (i.e. in Dostoyevski's writings).

Dostoyevski was strongly anti-Polish.

The original article (in Polish) can be found: przeglad-tygodnik.pl/index.php?site=felietony&name=969

News / what is typical polish website locator like google? [7]

I have noticed Google jamming a couple of times the last few days. So if that's the case I use Yahoo

and Yahoo uses google when it jams.

or Windows own (Live Search?)

Yes, it is called Live search. Microsoft wants to improve its functionality by buying or merging Live Search with Yahoo.

All roads lead to google :)

USA, Canada / Why aren't Polish people immigrating to Canada instead of the UK? [148]

there are so many things to do in Toronto that one wonders why so many people dislike it.

Not sure about disliking. The city is great for events, and when you live an hour away it's not such a big deal to come and visit, but I mean living there. That's a different story. Wouldn't you agree?

For a big city it is still safe and fun. Otherwise it would not be so populated.

Miranda, c'mon, what kind of argument is this? :))
You can do much better.
Btw. Mexico City is even larger than Toronto so it much be so much better and safer to live there ;)

Also, consider the ethnic composition of TO. It's an immigration magnet, like many other large cities are. After all, what kind of chance does a current immigrant have in places such as Tobermory (population 3400) and practically no job opportunities for newcomers.

If google has one of their research labs in Poland then I'd say they would be likely to be the best seacrh engine.

How about English? Is there anything better than google engine?

USA, Canada / Roads and Driving rules in Poland versus America [63]

I can't say I've seen more of them in Poland than e.g. in Canada or US. In the UK, true, people drive more calmly than in many other countries. That's my experience.

Your experience is fine, but stats show that Poland has slightly more traffic fatalities than the US (per capita) and almost twice as many as Canada.

Also, take into the account the difference in the sheer volume of drivers on the road in the US, Canada and Poland.

News / Poland: the 51st state of America [119]

Perhaps your invective is better suited for their ears

I posted what I did because I am a member of PF and topic is right. I am not a member of any Canadian medical forums though. The situation is not a secret. After all I did not attend nursing schools in Windsor Ontario, so I read in a Canadian newspaper that a couple yers ago not a single graduate of the scholl stayed in Canada.

Some, luckily, are returning though. They like the money but not the working conditions.

Walmart offers extremely cheap perscriptions now.

True. Some drugs in Walmart are very cheap. Drugs alone don't do it though. You still need a doctor, and some people need more than just 250mg ampicillin once every 2 or 3 years.

There is not quite the wailing in the streets you seem to imply.

Oh, the streets are fairly clean. Only the fittest and fattest can roam then ;)

No inequities?

Would that be even possible?

Still, who cares.
You call a doctor (they'll actually come to your home no matter what time of day or night), or go to see one and you are taken care of. If you're French it's all free. If you're not you'll pay about $100 for the service and they may throw in the prescription drugs for the price. In a US hospital the $100 won't cover even a single Tylenol pill. And that's in addition to a couple thousands of dollars per day in a hospital bed if the get the privilege.

he family did not have the best things to say about the national health care in France.

Mileage may vary. My sister couldn't be happier. She has a condition which requires specialized computer systems so she can do her work. Since it's health related the gov. pays it all and the price was not trivial 80,000 FF for that alone. That on top of a mountain of other medical expenses which in the US would put most middle class Americans on the street.

Apparently z_darius got his butt kicked in America so he is grumpy. :)

Actually it wasn't my butt but that of an employee of mine. I spent 8 hours in an "emergency" room with a patient whose ribs were broken and one lunged collapsed. 8 hours! When I complained I was told American medical system is the best in the world :))

having 'titles" in this country helps, but what really counts is your head on your shoulders.

In the so called US health system it's not about heads on shoulders at all, but about money in banks, or pockets. Believe me, hospital will not accept your head, or mine as a payment for their services. But hey, don;t take my word for it. Check it out one day and tells us what you found out.

Btw, didn't your family get their butts kicked in France if they're so grumpy about the health system there?

News / Poland: the 51st state of America [119]

The last time I read, it is estimated that about 48 millions of Americans do not have a health insurance, mostly illegal immigrants.

And where did you read that illegal immigrants are called Americans?

American health system sucks. Plain and simple. Unless you're loaded of course, and spending few hundred $$ for some of the major operations is just s little bump in your investment portfolio.

In fact in the US there is no health care system at all but a huge business. That business is so much better than the one in Canada (for example) that Americans used to go on drug tours to Canada. No. Not that kind of drugs. They would go to Canada to fill their US prescription for as low as 90% of what they would have to pay in the US. The same drugs, the same manufacturer, No difference at all. Canadian government had to ban those (an drug sales on the internet).

There are good examples of well functioning public health systems (France or Germany) but they are not widely publicized in the US media. Instead, the America pharma and medical lobby do all they can to paint public health care as a sign of communism, the fall of freedoms and intrusion of the government into personal lives and decisions. Where the propaganda fails it's not hard to create a crisis and offer a solution, such as 100% private medical system of course. One that does indeed exist in Canada has little to do with the system itself but rather with a huge competition for workforce. Americans scoop most Canadian nursing school graduates and a large number of doctors.

As for "free" medical care in the US - it's free to get patched up to be sent home. But first you have to wait for hours and hours, regardless of the reported condition. But try to receive extended care, such as cancer treatment and similar. Now we're talking huge money. The poor don't have enough to even get started, the middle class is no longer middle class less than half way through the treatment - having sold the house, liquidated IRA and all kinds of saving accounts.

Health insurance can help, but beware of those thieves. The employ really good doctors, lawyers and such to prove to the unsuspecting customers that they are not eligible for one benefit or another for some obscure, but legally sound reason.

If you're healthy you can do quite well in the US. If your health is so and so, and you have to work for a living then... good luck.

Money doesn't bring happiness, but in the US it can buy few dozen years more to live.

USA, Canada / Why aren't Polish people immigrating to Canada instead of the UK? [148]

It based on an observation that Canadians aren't that bright and tend to be very large and stand around with their mouths agape with their lower lip just above their navel.

It's also an observation Canadians make about Americans. Especially those who come here in July in full skiing gear and ask about the nearest skiing resort. We tell them to keep driving north. The numbers of those who came here to pet "teddy bears" has diminished.

Not a bad place, this Canada. with only 33 million people it has a decent standard of living and it has the most powerful military in the world. Paid for by the US taxpayer, of course. As Miranda says, it's not all just roses though. What may look on a map like a city is in fact a... I dunno how to call it. Unless you like rural lifestyle, your other options are a precious few large cities, with Toronto NOT being such a great place to live.

Wroclaw Boy mentioned living across the border from Detroit. I dunno if you'll like it WB. Windsor is a featureless dump. Detroit does have a lot of features but most are ones people tend to avoid if they want to raise a family and lead somewhat decent lives.

Ikea suspends all investments in Poland

After a few purchases I have suspended all my investments in IKEA. I am not into remodeling my home every year, so when I buy furniture I need it to last a bit longer than that.

News / Poland: the 51st state of America [119]

According to CIA man James Pavitt, "Poland is the 51st state of America". How does it make you feel Polish people, that Poland is looked upon by the CIA as nothing but a puppet, slave state of America

From my angle it's not so good but
this makes me feel much, much better than Poland being the 18th republic of the USSR.

Yeah, everybody would like to be a part of the USA...I'm sure Poland would.

That statement seems to have been written quite late at night.

There are towns and villages in Poland where every home has a family in the USA (Limanowa, Tarnow, Bialystok), is going to have one or the whole family is here already

I'm pretty sure they'd swapt America for Germany or UK if they could. Or perhaps it's not about the love for America but the Dollar?

the few young hotheads who get on the "bash 'merica wagon" don't really count.

Who decides that your statements count?

Language / Two verbs: to clean - some examples of usage... [6]

'to dry clean', I believe is 'prać'

'prać' is more generic, although it mostly suggests the use of water.
"dry cleaning" is "pranie/pralnia chemiczna". I'm not sure I ever heard an infinitive form for this. The usage I am aware of is "zanieść do pralni chemicznej" and derivateves

Love / Soldier born in Poland / living in England. Fiance going away for ages. Complicated... [205]

marriage trolls stayed away from here

Marriage trolls?
What marriage?

You're not married and if you ever are it doesn't mean it will to be the soldier fella. First he has to go to Iraq and come back to pay that car off. Remember? And he needs to come back without a nice Iraqi girl too. You also need to stay in the relationship while he's away, which, based on your first post, may or may not happen.

don't comment then if you feel like it's none of your business, i didnt specifically asked for YOUR opinion.

You didn't specifically exclude anybody from the request for comments so don't act like a kid who was denied a lolly pop. I hope this is a good lesson for you. If you open post something in front of the whole world then anybody may comment. The only person to blame, if there is anybody to blame, is YOU.

Next time think BEFORE you click the "post message" button.

that is none of your business.

None of what you wrote here was mine or anybody else's business, and still isn't.

you don't have the right or enough knowledge about the british army system to ridicule it

I have the right to say whatever it takes to make you realize what your true feelings and decisions for the future are. You gave me that right by opening up in front of the whole world. This is not to say the future will be the way you just declared but this:

all the trolling going on here made me realise just how confused and lost i was when i have written my first post

just proves that to convince Poles about something is easiest if you try to convince them to accept quite the opposite. Works like a charm, doesn't it? :))

Good luck to you both.

Life / A small gift for a Visitor from Poland (she's a music teacher) [13]

o native reservations unless you count the projects.

I dunno then. Pittsburgh Steelers?

All she's asked for is tea and coffee, saying yours in Poland isn't very good.

Funny. Wifey brought back some tea from Poland :)

a lot more expensive there

A laptop!
See? Tea is not such a bad idea ;)

Honestly, perhaps others will be more helpful. I haven't been in Poland lately.

but now they might ask him to go anyway even if he says he doesnt want to anymore

This is now but I posted what I did before this newest information.

i only posted this thread because i wanted to share this with people similar to me and maybe exchange experiences, rather than getting my ass kicked for being doubtful and 'unloyal' or listening

1. You wanted honest opinions, didn't you?
2. I did not kick your ass for anything, although you certainly haven't come across as a Penelope.

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

I can't speak about customer service in Poland today, but when I still lived there it was definitely in a great position to improve.

The same is true in some isolated cases in North America, but in general the service is great.

Not only in stores! While waiting for my flight to Poland, all the Polish people started lining up 1/2 hour before they started seating!

Not sure if this is so bad.
I prefer that everybody is on board a few minutes before the plane is scheduled to take off , instead of a few minutes after.

Life / The strangest things in Poland [468]

how close people stand when they are speaking with you, especially men!

It took me a while to realize that :)

I read somewhere where they suggested that this stems from Poles, for the last 200 (+/-) years either couldn't talk in their own language or they couldn't talk openly. Hence the the coziness uncomfortable to many from other countries.

As for the lines in stores, I dunno, perhaps it might be explained using somewhat similar background. If you have to line up for hours to get that piece of meat you don't want anyone to sneak in front of you. Realities changed, the habits will likely change with time.
