UK, Ireland / Polish Migrants makes room for '20 to a house [59]

Nope. Real bums are usually not bumming around.
They are limited to a cardboard box under the Grand Ave. :)
Not a sox fan. Occasionally Cubs.

Life / Black American Living In Poland [283]

Arthur, you are well adjusted and a smart, educated young man. Don't be bothered by instigators who try to put you down and try to make you feel feel like you know what. Nationality counts in Poland by blood line and not the place of birth, so you are polish raised in America. American by birth, because it is the law of this country.

Pregnant Polish women do not get on the plain to America being almost 9 months pregnant hoping to give birth to a baby on American soil. It it the Mexican issue, when pregnant women run across the border to have 'american" citizen baby. From what I hear in the media, it may change.

Life / Real life of a Polish (the Great Woman, or even the Humble Man) :) [20]

However, ideally you should not live together.

As I drove to work this morning and listen to my favorite radio talk show, they said that statistically, couples who live together before they get married, divorce more often than the couples who did not. There was no explanation given for it, just numbers.

So, polishcanuck has a point there. "Trial test" is not a good idea.
Also, based on my own experience, I lived with a man, we got engaged and then...we split. Later, I married another one. Well, we got divorced later, but not due to cohabitation issues.

i am the only british person here

So, why is your English so lousy? Is it the reason you can not even get a cleaning job because Poles do it better? It must be hard to be a looser in "your own" country ... :)

Life / JOKES ABOUT POLISH. Have we deserve it? [68]

That's wonderful. Keep it going guys!

I also hear that when kids from Poland start their education here they are much more advanced than the kids here. They struggle for a while with English of course, but ones they are into the classes they realize that they studied it in Poland already. One of my friend's son was a C student in Poland, needed tutoring in math, but when they moved here...he was bored in the classroom and was getting A's.

Life / JOKES ABOUT POLISH. Have we deserve it? [68]

I don't like any stupid or demeaning jokes about anybody, but I think this one is just cute:

A Polak saw a priest walking down the street. Noticing his
collar, he stopped him and said, "Excuse me, but why are you wearing your
shirt backwards?"
The priest laughed, "Because, my son, I am a Father!"
The Polak scratched his head. "But I am a father too, and I
don't wear my shirt backwards!"
Again the priest laughed. "But I am a Father of thousands!"
To which the Polak replied, "Well then you should wear your shorts
backwards!"

I used waitress for a living when I was going to college and worked at Sicilian restaurant. (occasionally, there were some men in suits dining there and the owners were tip toeing around). Hmm...

The crew was of mixed heritage: Italian, Polish, Irish, Mexican. Yes, we did call each other "names" at times, but all for a good laugh mostly. The place was really fun to work for.

It is no longer the case in my current politically correct environment... :)

Life / JOKES ABOUT POLISH. Have we deserve it? [68]

I personally do not come across any people who would tell polish jokes, but maybe because I work in a corporate environment where diversity is constantly promoted. Not to mention an affirmation of Code of Conduct on yearly bases. As a result, it makes a comfortable place to work for all people with various backgrounds.

I heard more jokes in the 80-s, including the radio and TV, mostly comedians. I don't remember if I read it somewhere, but the Polish Congress in The US complained and it stopped, because I don't seem to hear any polish jokes in the media and I often watch comedy channels... :)

I'm sure the jokes still exist at parties, between friends (or enemies) or within some groups who believe that any foreigner is a threat to their job...

In general, polish people are regarded as good, solid, hard working people. (Unfortunately, mostly for housekeeping and child/elderly care)
Just to comment on the situation in Germany. Well, we were never "good neighbors" and an average German would have their opinion the same as his parents or grandparents had. Too bad polish people are not helping themselves and some can behave badly.

I am good and long time friends with two German sisters. They are wonderful, good hearted women and we really like and respect each other. They feel bad and are ashamed of the past, because not all German people were Nazi killers. Just like Polish people, many were also helping Jews.

My cousin's husband (they live in Warsaw) works for a German Company (designing inside of corporate plains). He mostly works at home and flies to Germany couple of times a month. His German boss absolutely loves him and respects him. He could replace him with a German engineer anytime if he wanted to...He pays him handsomely as well.

My advise: if you hear a joke and you don't like it - nip in the bud. Mean joke tellers are mostly cowards anyway.

Life / Music and lyrics to The Coachman or Furman song [3]

There was a song by either Ślask or Mazowsze assembly under the title "Furman"
I remember a man singing with a chorus. The words were very funny.

Some of the words were:

"koń nie prosi i nie pyta
ale twarde ma kopyta
i jak wierzgnie to się zdarza
ze dosięgnie gospodarza
Hej, wio hetta wio
Hetta stary mlody jary..."

If you take the words to a polish music store, they may find the song...

Work / Poles Go to Work Abroad [30]

I can understand the first generation having to do any kind of of work, but there is no excuse for their kids. I also know some young people stuck with cleaning jobs and no desire to do anything better, even tough they claim to have degrees from Poland.

I don't like it. I don't get it. I wish, we polish women did not have "the opinion" of being such good housekeepers...being great nurses if not doctors, lawyers or bankers would be better... Of course they are plenty of them in Chicago, but they are mostly serving the non English speaking Polonia.

On the brighter side, we sure know how to manage our money wisely and buy a house in no time (often for cash).

History / Polish Jews - they changed their Jewish surnames to Polish [532]

Well, so maybe some polish radio programs are up to snuff saying that Poland is ruled by Jews and why would they care to keep young polish people there or to make Poland powerful...? Hmm

I dismissed the "news" as some jewish hating propaganda...but...Hmm, again... :(

USA, Canada / American attitude towards Poland [89]

Artur, kids are cruel everywhere. They will always call each other names. It does not matter if the other kid is Polish, Mexican, fat, wearing glasses or having freckles and red hair - just to name a few "reasons". I attended a grade and a high school in Poland.

Oh, the names the kids could call each other! And, we were ALL THE SAME!
It's just a part of growing up.

News / The Polish Economy and its future [101]

Poles are great as individual workers, but poor as far as group work is concerned.

Yes, I agree. Poles need to learn how to work as team. When there is a group of polish people they don't seem to agree on anything. One is smarter than the other. Let the smartest one lead.

Food / Is there McDonalds, KFC, Pizza Hut etc in Poland? Food survey. [222]

I think Poles are still in a decent shape comparing to western dwellers. Some may be just pleasantly plump, but not grossly obese (ok, a few are). I left Poland in 1980 and the amount of HUGE people on the street was shocking to me. My aunt in Poland always complained that she is fat. I wrote back to her that she could be a model comparing to a lot of people on the street (she was about 180 Ibs then).

Guess what, they got bigger since then and I gained 17 pounds since my arrival. Some people gain more than that in a year. IT'S THE FOOD plus the convenience of a car and an elevator in a 3 story building. As I literally run up the stairs, my fellow Americans are waiting for an elevator! People love to dig their grave with a fork and a knife, if you know what I mean. This might be a blunt statement, but it's time to zip the mouth for many.

News / The Polish Economy and its future [101]

Artur, I really like your forecast. If it happens, I may go back to Poland to retire and give English lessons part time :)

Kidding aside, after the past and current struggles, Poland will thrive. You guys need to get rid of all the communist and post communist people in government.

Please vote. It's the best you can do for the country.
