Travel: Wrocław-Berlin-Wrocław

it depends when you buy the ticket. leave it too late and it will cost more.
the train via poznan is quicker than the direct train
should take about five hours
you could book a sleeper, which leaves around midnight
the ticket office for the berlin train is far right, as you walk in the main entrance

there is a special bus... not eurolines... sorry, i have no details though.

Weird and quirky events and competitions in Poland.

there is some madness that takes place in the mountains... contraptions are designed and constructed... cardboard cars etc... the contestants then try to get to the bottom of the mountain in one piece. can't find a link though.

most guitar players in one place... an annual affair in wroclaw. it's on youtube

most people bouncing a basketball in one place. wroclaw holds this record... i think.

Bicycle touring in Poland

there are cycle maps for wroclaw... so i guess they exist for other cities.

they show major routes, alternative routes, gradients, cycle paths, distance, approximate time to travel the distance... all you would need.

Genealogy / Looking for polish soldier that lived in Morriston, Swansea UK in 1951 [3]

if he stayed in the area... try any of the following

Polish ex-service men's club

Polish club

Catholic club

check an old phone directory

or, try a military website

this person would be 70+ years old and possibly no longer with us. be prepared for that eventuality.

there should be a list of names somewhere... possibly in swansea records, military records, or maybe the national archive.

if you find a record... put time and place together... you might come up with a name.

try and give us more info to work with

Life / What's the weather like in Poland? [81]

here's more weather news:

polskieradio.pl/thenews/national/artykul117871_winter_falls_on_po land___in_october.html

Additionally, cold and gusty winds of up to 110 kilometers per hour locally are making life miserable for pedestrians, the chill factor bringing temperature down to the equivalent of minus 8 Celsius!

however, wroclaw, today, is cold and gray. not too bad.

Travel / Looking for a typical restaurant in Wroclaw [26]

Wrocław restaurant? Um, Sphinx

sphinx is ok... large plate... service ok... busy... not too expensive.

But... they use low quality meat... anything that resembles a cutlet is tough and stringy.

i stopped going there a long time ago.

Genealogy / Looking for J.Kowalska & M. Usczyk. [3]

I am searching for my mother's cousin Johanna Kowalska last in Poznan & a foster sister Maria Uśczyk last in Swientochlowitz. My mother's name is Maria Cichon, born in Swientochlowitz in 1937.

have you checked genealogy websites to see if others are looking for the same names.

as tlum explained... kowalski/a is a very popular name... rather like smith in the uk or robinson in the states.

i'd begin my search by looking for usćzyk or cichon

genealogy
ancestry
family search
jewishgen
nasza klasa
also... search facebook, etc.

Life / Polish funerals-no coffins inside a church ?? [5]

It is only taken to a chapel (often found inside or nearby the cemetery).

this seems to be true. unless it's a village with no chapel.

i've only been to one funeral in Poland... i thought it was just a small church we were in. it may have been a chapel though.

Language / Slang words like man, dude [29]

Same in UK, if you are friends, you can call your buddy a CUNT and it is ok.

Some people, friends or not, take great exception to the word cunt. It's not worth saying it... even to a friend.

something to start you off: berlin.de/international/berlin_a-z/airports/index.en.php

you will probably land at Tegel airport. but, please check with the airline.

I'm told that a place to stay in Berlin will cost 50-60euro per night.

Travel / Going to Szczecin - other airports in Poland [18]

Keep in mind that there are two Berlin airports. Berlin connections are good for travellers... you'd also be better off with a morning arrival in Berlin.

don't forget that you'll need Euros when in berlin.

Travel / Activities in Wrocław [11]

Do the search for Continental Hall in Wroclaw

Centennial Hall. but most locals won't react to this name.

most locals are aware of Hala Stulecia

everyone knows of the Hala Ludowa

They are all the same place. And so far as I'm concerned... it's still Hala Ludowa.

Real Estate / Room for one person in Bródno District [8]

Anyone else would like to make a comment?

they are using you to pay for the flat and the son's upkeep. i'd go elsewhere... i'd still be paying for the flat, but i'd feel more comfortable.

Life / Poland not so cheap anymore!! [47]

Indeed the old "when i was a nipper" old fart speech

my first round... four beers... cost 1pound. that would be about 1974.
my mum took almost half my pay packet... 5pound !... for housekeeping.

in the uk recently i set aside 1pound for each item... bread, milk etc.

Tram/bus tickets here in Wroclaw don't seem to go up in price very often.

ciggies, we know are tied in to some rule or other.

places like Biedronka are now the norm for many people

Despite reading recently that wages are going up (thenews.pl)... i've seen no sign of it.

There are one or two ship's records: from australia to the usa
A few mentions at facebook etc

So, the spelling seems good. play around with the above variations.

Genealogy / Looking for: Martha/Marta Galus. [2]

I am looking for a Polish woman who in 1937 was around 22 years old.

you are looking for someone aged in her nineties, so the reality of finding a living person is slim.
it may be that this person left Poland. if so, check social security records for various countries.
check death records.
check marriage records
check census records

i would be inclined to look for children or great-grandchildren

when did you or anyone last make contact with this person ?

this would read better if it were kanageroot.

The difference between a kangeroo and a kanageroot.

One is an Australian animal. The other is a Geordie stuck in a lift
