UK, Ireland / irish male wants move to poland but need your advice [10]

Hello steer4omdarear,
And welcome to the Polish Forums.

first problem is my polish is very basic im learning all the time but will this be a major issue when i move over?

It depends on where you are going and what you intend on working at but YES, it is important to learn Polish, it will make life much easier for you.

second question is i thinking moving to krackow, katowice or glwice is their any other places you recommend or anyting to warn me about these 3 places i picked

I live near Krakow (I am from Dublin).
it is a city and it is quite expensive but it is beautiful.

third is work.... im qualifed mechanic but i want change in career and i wondering what jobs wood you suggest in poland for english speaker?

Teaching English is an option, there are a number of courses you can do in Ireland before you go.
You can use the search box in the top right of this page to look for teaching related threads, there are loads of them.

Let us know if you have anymore questions.

Travel / Tatry Mountains Poland / First Snow [29]

Quick update.
It is snowing in the mountains south of Krakow.
This means lots of snow in the Tatras, might be the last good snow for the season.
And I might finally get time to snowboard this weekend (fingers crossed).

You didn't get much snow last year did you?

Yeah we had loads and loads and loads of snow this winter especially in January February , shovelling the driveway trying to find the car. ha ha ha

News / Poland to make cuts amid gloomy economic forecasts [30]

Ireland's unemployment rate is expected to rise to 6.6 percent next year from 5.5 percent in 2008.

I know unemployed people can claim benifits from the government in the U.K. and Ireland but what about the U.S.

I am also not clear on the benefit system in Poland, does anybody know.
I think it has changed recently?.

The price of living here in Poland is very high compared with Ireland, the U.S?. and the U.K.
Many things are the same price as Ireland/U.K but the wages here (in Poland) are significantly lower.
Accommodation (depending), Kitchen utilities (cookers, refrigerators etc...) are the same price, which is madness.
Vegetables are cheaper.

It would be interesting to do a price check.
We could compare average prices of things in our respective countries.

arent these figures just kind of arbritary and massaged down by various gov't schemes of either finding ways of pushing ppl off lists or onto other lists?

I know what you mean but we have to work with something but you raise a good point.

Work / Availability of teaching positions in Kraków [30]

True...

Come on Seanus, spill the beans, you're a teacher, tell us what the craic is these days?.

The place where you teach, is it a big city or a town/village?.

Our school has an excellent relationship with our students, we have school parties every month. Almost every student knows everything about their teachers.

I heard of schools, "encouraging" teacher/student relationships before.
Hook yourself a foreigner, a bit seedy I thought but it might have just appeared that way, this was just something i was told.

Work / Availability of teaching positions in Kraków [30]

The need for a native has gone now.

That is good.
There was a bit of a monopoly before.
I remember being told I got paid more than a fully qualified doctor.
Which was ridiculous, it's just supply and demand.

Teaching can be good craic and I found it to be a very good way of getting to know Polish people and their behaviour.
I always thought the teacher/student relationship thing was strange, there is an invisible barrier.

Work / Availability of teaching positions in Kraków [30]

Krakow is pretty pricey, no?

Compared to what?.
It is a city, so things are more expensive.
Accommodation can be fierce expensive, if you don't get in before the students take everything.

You can live for cheaper in a smaller town, I don't know if you will be paid as much as in krakow?.
But not everybody likes small towns.

The average wage for a newbie teacher is about 1800-2000.

Really? wow, that has come down a lot.
I haven't taught in years.
I was getting 4000 a month, for a four day week (Fridays were free.)
But back then there was a real demand.
The school I worked for bought my plane ticket and all, organised my flat and work visa, I was sorted.

Work / Availability of teaching positions in Kraków [30]

If you can gather some money together then I would come earlier maybe at the start of July and start looking to get in before the rush for jobs...

nuncle, One more thing, it is also good to come a little earlier so you can find inexpensive accommodation, near to your work place.
At the beginning of the academic year there is always a huge rush to find available places to rent and if you are late you limit your choices.

It is basically a feast during the academic year and a famine during the holidays.
Krakow is a student city.

Best of luck to you.

Work / Availability of teaching positions in Kraków [30]

Anything is possible but it is just unlikely that a teacher, such as yourself, with no experience of teaching will do so well.
I would recommend holding off until the end of summer.
Are you in a rush? have you family or friends here?

Work / Availability of teaching positions in Kraków [30]

hello nuncle,
And welcome to the Polish forums.

mid-May onwards. Is it a bad time to apply?

I don't mean to sound negative but,
I think this is generally a bad time to find a job teaching.
The academic year has finished and people are on holidays.

It seems like most schools are always open to the possibility of hiring, regardless of semester.

I think a lot of schools close down altogether or have very few classes to cut costs.

I suppose I can always try some private lessons until I find a job in a school.

This will help a lot.

I don't want to spend all this money on a flight, education and then not be able to find a job! So what are your thoughts?

I don't know what the future holds in store for you.
I would recommend holding off coming over until September or even October.
Try sending your C.V. via email to all the schools in Krakow asking for employment, it'll give you a good idea of the reality of the situation.

Best of luck.

History / Walentego Badlaka's well in the market square, Krakow (Katyn) [13]

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ryszard_Siwiec

Ryszard Siwiec "commited suicide by self-immolation in protest against the Soviet-led invasion of Czechoslovakia. He set himself ablaze in Warsaw during a national harvest festival on September 8, 1968 at the Dziesięciolecia Stadium, and died in hospital four days later. His act was witnessed by nearly 100,000 spectators, including the national leadership and foreign diplomats who had been invited to the festival intended as a vast propaganda spectacle."

I think it was a 100 year since Mr. Siwiec was born.
i have just heard about him for the first time today.

News / More and more jobs moving to Poland from other parts of Europe... [50]

The European Commission is also investigating 52.7 million euros (47 million pounds) in aid Poland gave to Dell's Polish unit.

maybe something to do with it?

I thought that was not allowed in the E.U. favouritism to one E.U. country?

Thanks for the link, I was unable to find that particular information.
Perhaps it is more general than just Poland?.

wants mixed up with their needs. Do you REALLY need that 4 bedroom home, big property, 2 SUV's, and all the other toys?

The Panel, SUVs, D4

Life / Homosexuals in Poland / Hands off (PETITION) [797]

Why is it hypocritical, Seanny?

Because you say you aint gay but you kiss so well.

I put the chink comment in the racist thread, dunno how it landed here.

Oh, okay, probably just a hiccup.

Life / Homosexuals in Poland / Hands off (PETITION) [797]

How did this deviate so far from race btw?

Sheep believes that Gays constitute a genetically distinct race to straights,

Where'd he say that?.

I am still annoyed with you MrBubbles, for posting such a terrible song that is now stuck in my ea'd.

I couldn't be gay if I tried.

Don't knock it till you've tried it ;)

I have to agree with Seanus here.

Plus MrBubbles posted that dreadful song, so he lost some points there :)

So the Homosexual race will soon be extinct if the men choose never to have sex with women.
How much is a passport to Lesbania?.

All of this is completely off topic, The racist thread.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

Would there generally still be any snow left in April to ski on, either in Zakopane

It is difficult to say.
The news says that there is over a metre of snow in Zakopane.
This will take a while to melt.
I caught the last of the ski season last year at the end of March.
But I will be going skiing next week and I will let you know the conditions.

Travel / Recommendations for Zakopane [48]

Thanks, it is Edith Piaf - Je Ne Veux Pas Travailler.

I found to go was after 4pm in the afternoon until 10pm when the slopes are emptying of people and then the times are drastically cut.

I have noticed this too, all the buses leave at then.

I have never actually looked at the town.
I live not far from there and I just go for the skiing.
It has developed a lot in the past six years and it is a shame if it has not maintained it's beautiful architecture as you say.

Where abouts in Slovakia do you go ukpolska?.
