Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

if I could come to Poland, I would need at least 3 months to collect all the material
( family docs )..

One Name I am connected to is Gorecki. This is my grandmothers maiden name.
I cant even begin to tell you all the Gorecki's who came to the states..

and storys from my uncle .. he told me that some important man came to see
his mother and that the Police and secret service were blocking the street, no
one could go past them. he couldnt even to go home..

he said he was someone who was big in Poland ( one of grandmas nephews)
a relative that knows her and this was in the late 1930's..

my first thought was Henryk Gorecki!!! ha ha.. but nahh couldnt have been him
he is not from where my grandmothers from.. anyway.. thats my story.

My brother has been doing our family tree bit of a mixed bag, no Polish but some French and lots of Irish :)

how far back did he get so far?

My Dad, sister and myself have spent years tracing our family roots and there's been some interesting results - including a link to the British in India. Very odd. :-)

its definately a job.. long homework assignment that never ends :))) LOL

Genealogy / software for genealogy in Polish [5]

What kind of genealogical software is available to those who speak Polish?

I use the family tree maker.. but I dont think thats avail in Polish, I was wondering
because I am hopeful on being able to produce a book for my cousins who still live
in Poland on our families here in the states..

currently it does the work for you and you add the names dates and
any other info thats imperative to the history..

WOW> is there nothing? there has to be some type of software that is used in
genealogy that is similar to family tree maker ?

Genealogy / how many know their own family histories? [139]

made a trip to Salt Lake for a Polish Genealogical Conference and learned quite a bit. I also did a lot of research at the FHC Library, where I discovered some of the above names, which had been changed.

I plan to do that.. and trip to Poland in the future.. your able to read those older
records Between 1808-1862?

I have found some that they didnt wait for the page to dry, not good..

a group of raiders I believe to be Cossacks destroyed the village and he was among the few survivors.

thats amazing,, it makes you think , thru all of the wars, fighting how people survived
life was so different then..

who was that first person who survived.. we cant say life was a piece of cake
for sure what ever it was they survived we cant even imagine.

you are very lucky to have found so much to share with your family, future generations :)

but I'm skeptical of it's Polishness

have you found any type of documentation for him ? perhaps cencus?

who migrated to the US. Quite a few seem to have headed to Detroit.

when did they immigrate?

mine came in 1893 ( great uncle)

grandmother was 1914, grandfather 1907
other grandmother was 1903 and grandfather 1901

and tons of other family who trailed behind them all four sides all polish..
we took over heh heh..

ahhhhhh.. I live near detroit.. :))

I did that too.. I followed the tree upwards with the oldest known relative and came
back down the tree with names and dates. picked one to find and found them.. living
relatives of a great great uncle who actually knew my grandmother,, he was her
uncle.. but of course as time went on.. the family grew further apart.

but with re-connecting the family now has been in contact since 1800 :)

thats a long time. I also have a Piotr in my tree :) but he is long gone and he
was a twin... :)))

meant to add he was born in 1825.. his brother was Pawel :)

Ive not had much luck since.. records get sketchy..

News / How Poles truly feel about their situation in Poland and being in EU? [76]

I studied Polish in Krakow for a while in the 1980's. I have been as far West as Gorzow Wielkopolski and as far East as Augustow and Bilaystok. I have been to Gdansk, Sopot, and Gdynia and as far south as the Czech Republic so, yes I have seen a lot of the country.

Thank you :) Which one was the most interesting ?

Genealogy / Polish Roots: Doda or Roda [14]

Well, I think she has me beat.. she is alot younger by the looks..

I am sure if she was really my cousin, she came to visit I think my door would
be knocked down!! geese. lol..

Dzierzgowski/Dzierzgowska - definitely legal names, there are 2 villages named Dzierzgów in my area, so the surnames derivated from this name is very likely (although I never met anybody with that name :)

with most, isnt it usually how their surnames are formed by the town in which they
came from? with the female and male endings..

and I made a slight error on the roda should be goda.. is that legal name??

Genealogy / Polish Roots: Doda or Roda [14]

A second name I am looking for is Dzierzgowski/Dzierzgowska

in some records the name was spelled Dziergowski.. the Z was missing.. that
probably a error ...

one of my friends name is Duda, he has polish ancestry

I thought of Duda to.. the translation came off a russian script so it could be
duda.. but without a correct spelling thats all I have.. I was told the two other
names are legal polish names. ( I dont know)

Thanks goonie for responding.. that is food for thought.. it could be duda

History / Jewish belongings [118]

"...I would like to characterize the attitudes of Poles toward Jews.."

I am thinking this is made up for those who want to convince themselfs..
the real truth is,, Germans and Russians had some meat on their bones in
1945.. they didnt look starved.. and they wore some heavy warm clothing
to which I could see Poles, Jews ( who were spared) etc etc maybe looting to
find something to eat and put on.. what the hell would anybody do in that
situation.. the British and American army was there, but hell, to that many
starved people coming out of a camp.. what they hell would you do??

tell ya what i would do.. plant my arse in a vacant home and who the hell cares
who lived there,, I want my life back thats what!!!

give me food, shelter, and medication... anything to my survival..
and I seriously doubt that much was left after people were loaded onto trains
to go to their death.

News / A friend murdered in Poland; what the Polish police can do? [69]

Vladimer, we can only give advice,, I dont think anyone knows anything other then
what was told in here and in the news.. the embassy or someone should be
keeping contact with you.. dont they have interpreters helping you at all?

I cant help otherwise I would if I lived there.. I live in the united states so
I am in same boat.. and I can understand your wanting to know..

is there someone in here who can maybe direct her to the right offices>
someone who can find out these things.. this is already painful for her.
I dont know what else to do except ask in here. if i could translate you a
letter in Polish I would, but I am learning too..

Many warm hugs to you and your family..

USA, Canada / Americans who call themselves Polish - how do you feel about that? [112]

I'm not saying in all cases, but in some cases, the elderly prefer to be in a home in the twilight years as they realise they are too burdensome to a young family. In a home they may be surrounded with like minded people.

you are correct.. and some dont have any family as they have never married and
have become estranged from the family they did have.. those who are homeless
also go to nursing homes when they are in need of long term care and not yet
ready to go out into society.

wow.. we have just pointed out so many other reasons why people go to nursing homes and its not because their American family dont want them..

USA, Canada / Americans who call themselves Polish - how do you feel about that? [112]

I guess I am unamerican in the fact that I would gladly take care of my parents and would much rather do that than put them in a nursing home.

not taking care of parents has nothing to do with american.

the fact remains.. and i having first hand experience at it that taking care of someone
who is sick is a 24 hour job..

me and my two brothers and neice all took wonderful care of my mom.. but it was
extremely stressful, we all have jobs and me and my niece having kids.. you dont
want the kids to see grandma or grandpa suffering all the time.. even though they
wanted to help, it was extremely hard on them when i was gone for 8 hours to
work then another 8-10 taking care of mom and going home to sleep, and catch
up on my housework and shopping and other things neglected.

and if your parent is completely disabled and no longer able to move and completely
bedridden and it takes two to four people to lift them because they are heavy, or
have edema ( holding water) and swollen.. no one even knows till they have crossed
that bridge.. so stop throwing stones.. nursing homes were created by people who
obviously seen the stress and pressure one family goes thru just to care.. and if
its only a husband and wife who have no children and the wife has some type of
ailment how on earth can she provide care for her husband who is completely disabled?

nursing homes are not anything we want to do.. Ive worked in them and let me tell
you that the families are grief stricken and guilt ridden.. times have changed to where
jobs that take you out of town make it impossible for someone to be home,,
some are only children with no help etc..

* throws back the stones*

its not fair to make such a statement without knowing.. thats all.
FYI I did take care of my mother till she died. it was the hardest time of my life..
and we did finally have to have someone come to our home to give us some
relief to work and take days to catch our breath.. I dont wish anything bad upon
anyone, but its harder then people realize once that bridge comes.

Ps.. i would just like to add that the cost of home care is extremely high and
its a out of pocket expense.. so most do not have the funds to have home care
and have no choice but to use a facility that provides 24 hour care and accepts
medical insurance..

But that policy makes no sense at all!

its not a policy.. I can see your point, but America does not have the long
history..

Caucasians are not indigenous to Europe, we orginally come from either Northern Africa or India.

that was before a nation and culture were formed.. how far back are we talking here?

is it when we all sat in a cave drawing pictures of the days hunt. :))))

USA, Canada / Americans who call themselves Polish - how do you feel about that? [112]

Of course, when its someone incredible like JFK, nobody in Ireland willl mention he is american, he is Irish of course ;-)

ahhhhh I see how it works.. so All I need to do is play in few movies and I will
be polish.. :)))

I'm taking a guess that your asking me why I would ask this question,

Good guess :))

to many times people say over and over. your American..

We know this.. but.. to many times I keep repeating myself.. Aside from the
American indians.. who can say their roots stem from American soil..
mine as well as a good 3/4 if not more are all of some other ethnic background.
who all immigrated from some other country..

[quote=hello] 10-20 years ago American with Polish root would never admit s/he was in part Polish.. Times change :).

its funny how people say things, yet for eons, people have been enjoying all the
ethnic foods from each festival.. whether it was Polish, Italian, hungarian, irish.
etc..

Maybe 50-60 years ago and longer when times were rougher , people didnt
wander far off their turf ..

10-20 years ago, people were going to rock concerts and wearing big hair
and tight clothes and it was cool!! no one cared where you came from
Pull up a chair and party.... DUDE.... ha

ha ha... fooled you all -

was that you bubba!!

Sheit!!!!
