UK, Ireland / Sad or stupid - a Polish teacher killed whilst urinating on live rail [88]

He didn't reflect on how the engine was powered and paid the consequences

Maybe he should have reflected on using a toilet.

In Poland most trains run on Diesel fuel, so it's a kind of a default setting in our brain.

Are you also telling us that it is normal for Polish people to urinate on railway tracks.

Love / I do not understand my Polish boyfriend [20]

I'm glad to hear that you are getting some help from his mother.

If he hasn't married you yet, he is not going to.

I think he is angry with himself because of the position he has put himself in.

When he has bad humour, does he shout at you ?

Are you sure that you want to stay in Poland ?

I mean, if you and the children could leave, would you go ?

Love / I do not understand my Polish boyfriend [20]

If I make a big problem of this, in certain form to betrey the confidence and support of his family.

Don't fight his family. You can't possibly win.

You have to work with them. Maybe become more friendly. If they learn to respect you a bit more then they might be more willing to help.

Love / I do not understand my Polish boyfriend [20]

Can his family help you with the kids ?

If they help look after the kids occassionally, it might give you some time to sort out your future.

Love / I do not understand my Polish boyfriend [20]

she can't take the kids without his permission. That's the law.

And that's her problem. She needs him to sign the documents.

Problem. If he doesn't sign then she's stuck where she is or leaves without the kids.

UK, Ireland / Sad or stupid - a Polish teacher killed whilst urinating on live rail [88]

really stupid is building not safe 3rd rail. Stupid and cheap.

No. Stupid is thinking you know better. There are plenty warning signs, if one doesn't pay attention to them then the consequences are obvious.

There is few manners, well known over all world, to stop such accidents.

It's not clear what you are saying. But if you mean there are ways to stop such accidents... I agree. The first one would be not to urinate on the live rail.

News / Has there ever been gold found in Poland? [21]

It is the secrets that are amongst us that make life most intrigueing.

And this is one reason why no-one will tell you the best place, if there is one, to pan for gold.

News / Has there ever been gold found in Poland? [21]

Has anyone found gold in any streams or anywhere in Poland?

A large amount of ancient gold was found in the area around Sroda Slaska, near wroclaw. Some of it 'disappeared' the rest ended up on special display in the local museum.

There is said to be gold in the streams around Ksiaz Castle, about an hour out of Wroclaw. Part of this is due to historical myth related to the castle and partly due to German occupation.

Law / Street performing (music) in Poland... permit needed? [14]

Would it be possible to perform in Swidnicka in Wroclaw?

There is a police station in Rynek... ask there... I have no idea if you need a licence or not... better to be safe than sorry.

USA, Canada / Are holidays to Florida popular in Poland? [21]

Are holidays to Florida popular in Poland.

Most people I know who visit the US for a holiday only do so if they have family or friends there.

You might find a direct flight from Berlin, Germany.

any one from that area who could be a guide?

Remember... We are talking about Ukraine not Poland.

It might be best to start a new topic and ask for direct help. There might be a forum member in or from Ukraine who can help you.

Genealogy / looking for annowal in wolyn [11]

The best place to look is either google or yahoo.

search: kostopil ... There is an airport listed here.
also search: Rivne

wikipedia has info

You also need an exact address for your mother, a modern map and an old map.

You have to double check everything. You never know what is still standing. Google Earth might be of use too

Did you check the rootschat thread and was it useful ?

Genealogy / Lewandziewski - where does this name come from? [3]

does anyone know anything about my family roots?

We need dates, please.

Lewandziewski : familysearch only gives two results, which are in Illinois, USA

Ellis Island records : Doesn't show anything.

A search of Australian records means a state by state check

Just my opinion. I think the original name was possibly Lewandowski.

UK, Ireland / Sending from Poland to UK - quick cheap and secure? [8]

The cheapest (if this equipment isn't too valuable) would probably just be to bubble-wrap it really well and send it via Royal Mail. Recorded delivery is of course safest but slower than regular post (at least on the Polish side).

As far as I know, all envelopes (whatever size) go by air to the uk. I usually put one padded envelope inside another, get it registered and marked 'priority' and Bob's your uncle. It arrives a few days later.

The catch is to make sure it's an envelope, otherwise it's a parcel and takes longer.

Life / Smokers in Poland..... price rise. [47]

As an example L&M Lights have just gone up from 6.50 to 8.05 zloty.

This is part of the government campaign to raise prices... for whatever reason.

UK, Ireland / Polish parents hang themselves at their Lincoln, UK home [66]

I spent two days working at Maudsley, which I think is Bedlam. It's a sad place to be. The serious mental cases were behind two locked steel doors. The treatment and surgery they gave people was amazing. The hospital, when i was there, also had day patients.

I was a builder at the time, not hospital staff.

Genealogy / Henryk Sowinski [10]

is this even possible to research?

I think you'll have to wait for someone else to answer that. I don't know about war records.

But you might find some links here on the forum. There is a links thread and some genealogy links are mixed in with other genealogy threads.

I'll see what I can find about the names, but not today. I'll let you know what I find in a day or two.

If these people moved to the USA or UK you should check Naturalization Records.

Genealogy / Henryk Sowinski [10]

Guest,

The first part of genealogy is gathering info from family members, checking and collecting family photos and family papers.
Have you done this yet ?

You don't need Polish genealogy sites, but of course in some situations they help.

Go to: familysearch

It's a good place to start.

For us to help you we need names and dates and place of birth.

Many of the results will come up showing either Poland, Austria, Prussia, Russia.

Just keep posting questions and, if we can answer them we'll be happy to do so.

Real Estate / Current price of Homes in Poland [41]

They stated there is nothing illegal about burning my own firewood

Sorry, I thought you meant adjoining forest. Our place is in a national park. That's what gave me the doubts.

and free firewood for a lifetime.

Maybe a little illegal, but homeowners deep in the countryside should factor in the savings on winter heating. Most wood burning stoves can heat radiators too.
