Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

I love her and i know she still loves me.

Great!.

I am useless at relationship advise, so please do not take anything I say seriously.

You love this girl and she loves you, great!.
Best case scenario, she gets back to Ireland, continues her life there with you.

I am just curious about this,
would she have to turn her back on her family to make this come true?.
Can you win over the family?.

You know the ex, will he follow her over and cause problems for you?.

i think it is important to have a workable goal.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

I used to work in a Callan school.
We had teachers from, the U.S.A, Scotland, England and me from Ireland.
We did have to speak RP but you can never completely get rid of your accent.
I thought this was excellent for the students.

A friend of mine studied English Linguistics in university and after she got her masters, she went to London, thinking London is the capital of England and therefore the capital of the English speaking world.

You can guess what happened, she couldn't understand anyone. :)

What does that tell you, I hear you ask, probably nothing but I am waiting for something and thought I'd waste my time and yours telling you this little story.

Food / How to Cook and Eat an Artichoke? [32]

with mayo, chili sauce, garlic, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper...

I am not a big fan of mayo for a dip, tastes too heavy but chili sauce, garlic, salt, black pepper and cayenne pepper sounds scrumptious :)

I am also like spinach, from my popeye days I guess

Ah, ok, and what dips work well with them?
guacamole?

Although I like to prepare food by colour, so maybe it is too much green.

I didn't know what an artichoke was.
What does it taste like? (please don't say it tastes like an artichoke)

Love / Whose Life is it? Polish girlfriend under family "house arrest" [224]

I know this is going to sound very laddish of me but I mean it from a more practical point of view.
Could you take this guy, if it came to it?.

Ireland32,
It is a strange situation,
I don't have any advise but I hope it works out for all of you.

Love / Do Poles ignore domestic abuse? [54]

my fights were from me taking it to the bullies.

Some day you could wake up and realise you are the bully.
It is a slippery slope.

Food / Vegetarian food in Poland? [83]

i'm vegan and agnostic, going to a small town in poland without eating meat or going to church (during easter is when we're going btw too), who wants to place bets how it's gonna turn out? haha

I am vegetarian and Atheist and i live in a small place in Poland.
I don't tell people I am Atheist, no reason to and the vegetarian thing is strange for most people and it is quite funny when they sometimes try to argue with me.

But I don't argue back, it is not for me to tell people how to live their lives.
I think vegetarianism never enters some people's minds, just not aware of it, like I wasn't.
There is a risk when arguing about being a vegetarian that you appear to be judging other people.
I have met some incredibly stupid vegetarians who do this, or at least seem to do this.
But people are slightly more understanding because i am a foreigner and therefore do things differently ha ha ha

Love / Do Poles ignore domestic abuse? [54]

Bullies need someone to stand up to them and defend the defensless. If not you, then who?

But what if in doing so you find out that you are the bully?.
it is not easy and I have learned a lot from it.

As for yelling, there is yelling and there is yelling.

Sometimes it is a release and sometimes it is degrading/bullying.
Domestic abuse comes under many categories, psychological abuse can some times be worse than physical.
But people fight and more often than not, when people fight they raise their voices and shout.

I would find it hard to believe anyone trying to justify psychological abusing someone by belittling them, shouting and generally being verbally violent.
But we may have different ideas of shouting.

Love / Do Poles ignore domestic abuse? [54]

No, you did the right thing, Sean.

That is what i thought but I was wrong.
His girlfriend kinda enjoyed the attention, they were both mad.
I understand now why police are reluctant to get involved in domestics.
It is not always clear cut.
If you bully a bully and she gets off on all this, what does that make you?.
I tried to shorten the story and in doing so left out some details but they were off their heads, you'll just have to take my word for it.

Love / Do Poles ignore domestic abuse? [54]

Many years ago,
there was a bunch of us, boys and girls, all friends, in Ireland.
A new fella, Patrick started hanging around with us.
I thought he was fine but the girls told me he was being abusive to them (creepy) and rubbing himself against them out side their houses at night when he followed them home uninvited.

A few of them came to me at the same time to tell me this.
So I told Patrick if I heard anything like that again I would knock him in to next week.
He disappeared.

Years later (I was about 19) I met him in London, he was hanging around with a load of people I know there.
His girlfriend, who I did not know, came to a friend of mine with a black eye, caused by Patrick.
I remembered what i had said to Patrick a few years earlier, so I went to follow through on my threat.
I burst my way in the front door and ran down the hall after the guy to give him a kicking.
He ran in to the bedroom and up jumps the girlfriend in front of him, screaming "leave him alone!".
His landlord, a friend of mine, came in and asked me to leave.
I did.
They both left the following week.
About two months after that i heard he had broken her arm, two ribs and generally smashed her up AND they were going to get married ???.

After that I realised what a dreadful mistake I had made,
that here was this bully, terrorising this young girl, while I was terrorising him (making me somehow like him), when in actual fact she loved (???) him and wanted to marry the guy.

It had nothing to do with me.
I was young and quick to temper back then but I learned a lot from this experience.
Basically that it takes two to tango and me interfering makes me an abuser.

I don't understand delikatna's thread here, her man is abusing her and she blames some other guys for not doing anything???.
Perhaps the other guys are just more experienced than i was?.

I lost my accent many years ago and wouldn't make a penny,

Where was the last place you saw it?.

Teaching 'Mid Atlantic' is the way to go.

The future is bright, the future is Irish!.

Life / How much do you HATE POLISH PEOPLE and POLAND [1260]

I hate Polish people very much.
Came around here last night with a bottle of tequila and forced me to drink it,
yes ladies and gentlemen, forced me to drink it.
How did they force me, I hear you ask?.
They poured it out and set it in front of me, what else was I to do???.
Now it is the next morning and I curse them bloody Poles and their hospitality!.

You are not

Greenway is much tastier

Where abouts is that one?.
I will give it a try.

don't advertise your vegetarian views too much

HHhhmmm... not advertising your vegetarian views too much is advisable anyway.
"too much" is in excess, overly doing something, hence my crazy reply.
I am not vegetarian to preach and I see you are not vegetarian and preach, ah well.

especially in smaller Polish towns. People expect you to be like them: stuff your face with lard and vodka and go to church every day. I was given agressive, heavy stares when I wore Indian attire - and that was in the middle of Warsaw, not some obscure village where they believe the world is flat and Catholic.

This is unfair and quite aggressive in it's own right.
I would expect to be looked at for wearing traditional dress from the other side of the world, in any country, city or town that were not used to it.

It reads like you wore your Indian attire in the hope to get a reaction.

Travel / krakow in april - looking for a guide 3rd to the 6th April [13]

I had just travelled to South Africa and a few surrounding countries and I loved it in Cape Town.
I wanted to buy an apartment there and normally Irish people go to America, Germany, Australia and England.
So I wanted to go somewhere else, the Japanese Yen was quite strong at the time.
So I looked up job in Japan or something, teach English, teach English, teach English.
So I did a T.E.F.L. (teaching English as a foreign language) course and the owners from a school from Poland were at the school looking for teachers.

I thought a year in Poland would prepare me better for Japan.
That was 7 years ago....
I have not lived in Poland for the past 7 years but I am back now, for a few years anyway.
I have to say I did not know much about Poland and Poland did not know much about Ireland back then but that has all changed, of course.

So it was a great adventure for me exploring this country.
You will both have a blast, Let us know if you would like to know anything else.

I live near to Krakow but thank you for complementing me on my English anyway :)

Travel / Tatry Mountains Poland / First Snow [29]

was utterly shocked at how good it was.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised too.
Modern day romance but real.

Come on lets bang out an auld tune :)
ONCE: Falling Slowly

OK, the sun is beaming out of the heavens and my work is done for the day.
i am hitting the slopes!!!

I love days like today.

I can't understand anything on the other threads anyway (nothing new there).

Have a good one!.

I am off again to hit the slopes.
Really beautiful spring weather but there is still plenty of snow.
I don't know how long it will last, the rivers are getting big.
Which means the snow is melting, as it has not been raining.
So probably just a few days left in the skiing season.

Ok so, it is the last of the skiing, in Bialka anyway.
It was plus 6.5, damn that Halny (a special warm wind).
And there were more people there today than I had ever seen.
It was still good fun but the conditions were not very good.

Oooopsss! loads of snow here.
This is the never ending winter.
since yesterday, there has been about 20cm of snow and it is still coming.
So in Zakopane there'll be more, possibly making this the last fo the skiing/snowboarding season.

Law / CHF loans & mortgages, customers in Poland left biting the bullet. Walking away? [20]

Haven't the Swiss been lowering every quarter (as often as is allowed) over the past 6 months or so?.
And Dom bank have done nothing till now and hence the big fall of 2%?.
That is the way I have understood it but I would like to hear alternatives.
Although Dom Bank may be in trouble because they were more willing to give 110% mortgages than most.

News / Is tan skin common among polish people? [57]

Hello JK,
And welcome to the Polish Forums.

There are many people on this forum from the Americas, who talk about Liberal's madness, it seems many people think this is the way it is around the world.

Perhaps you could tell me what you mean by liberals and why is everyone complaining about them? Is it the PC thing, if so give me some examples, please.

I am Irish and I live in Poland.
