Love / Polish girls and this age thing? [173]

Since when are assets such a big issue? If you're having a good time together, age difference shouldn't matter.

Love / Polish girls and this age thing? [173]

I myself wouldn't be able to be with a man who is 5 years older than me

I think the age difference gets smaller the older you get. The difference between a 35 year old and a 30 year old is much smaller than the differens between an 18 year old and a 23 year old, and both are 5 years difference, which is really not that big, anyway.

It's the Sun who reports this...I always suspect some sense of spectacularity when the Sun reports something. So I don't know...

Love / Brit working in Poland - asking this Polish lady if she's in a relationship? [114]

relationships with language barriers can be challenging.

They can, I know also from experience. Can lead to misunderstandings as well. And cultural habits might not be always compatible, i.e.: some ppl mention your first name in nearly every sentense they speak to you; in Holland it's considered very rude to do this as it only is done there when ppl are angry at you. So as a Dutchman I always feel a bit awkward when somebody speaks to me, mentioning my first name in every sentense they say to me: you know, M-G, it is a lovely day today. Also, if somebody does not specifically answers "no" to a question asked or txted and instead does not answer, which is usual in some cultures, it is in Holland assumed that that person agrees. This can also lead to peculiar sits. If you know what I mean.

UK, Ireland / Are the Poles in England hated? [450]

I second that as well, Osiol.

Some time ago we had that on Dutch television too: a guy with a map of Europe asked Dutch tourists in Spain to point out on the map where they were; answers varied from Italy to Estonia and even Holland and Britain. It became even funnier when they were asked where Holland was: answers again varied from Finland to Bulgaria to Spain and even the UK.

Unfortunately I could not find a clip of this on YouTube, so I guess you'll have to take my word for it :)

Life / Germans and Poles - Fiction or Myth? [127]

" All that is needed for Evil to triumph,
is for the good man to do nothing."
W. Dwight Eisenhower

Actually this is a quote from Edmund Burke.

The Second World War is in fact a prolongation of the First World War. And all parties involved in that war were responsible to more or lesser extent. The fact that the others stood by and watched Hitler go was mainly due to the fact that all remembered WW1 and did not want to repeat something like that. They simply thought that by giving in to Hitler, it would all blow over. Only with the threat to Poland they realised that it wouldn't. So in that sense they are co-responsible, but it was Nazi-Germany who created the sit.

Why is it that Poles always get so defensive when you point out an error in the past they made? Why do we all have to pity them (for good reason, though) and why do they always victimize themselves? The cleansing of Silesia and especially the cities of Wroclaw and Poznan is well documented and there is no need to deny it; it happened everywhere in former German territories, also in Poland.

Lesser: that Holland had a seperate division in the Waffen SS was merely due to the fact that Hitler cs saw them as brothers. It was forced upon the Dutch just like the Nazis forced other countries like Norway to do so. There were Lithuanians in the Waffen SS and some sources document Ukranians, Lithuanians and even Poles as their most enthousiastic guards in the concentration camps.

Love / Does she like me? - help needed please from any Polish girls.. [79]

ah well, I do my best. I just can't stand seeing guys being played around by cunning females who in the end get everything and the guys end up with nothing and in worst cases even the rep of being a pervert or *sshole. If a girl is not interested in a guy, ok, that can happen, but she should just SAY so. At least I say it straight to a girl when I'm not interested. It might be tough to say, but at least it's fair and honest. Unfortunately women come up with excuses and stories, leaving the guy guessing what it is all about. I respected the women who said straightforward that they were not interested in me much and much more than the ones who left me guessing and going in for that one extra free meal when they know they are not interested. I would call this type of women "attention wh*res"; not interested, but in it for the free meal and the attention you give them.

Life / Germans and Poles - Fiction or Myth? [127]

No, bitterballen are basically the same as kroketten, only in a different shape. Bamiballen (sorry for the spelling-error earlier) are basically balls made of Bami (fried noodles with vegetables and spiced meat) with a crust just like bitterballen and kroketten. Kroket en bitterbal are rolls and balls made of a thick kind of ragout; you can get them in different flavours: normal (beef usually), veal, gulasz, curry and vegetarian.

One thing i really liked in holland was krokette?. Put a euro into the vending maschine and out comes a hot snack. nice :)

Kroket :) They are nice, but I wouldn't eat them out of the Automatiek as we call those vending walls with Febo; I would order them at the counter and refuse them when the Turk gets it from out of that wall - you never know how long these things have been laying there and even though it's not healthy anyway, at least you know it's freshly baked by then and all the germs are dead :) Try bamieballen or nasischijven from the FEBO, incredibly fat, but delicious :)

Currywurst, Bratwurst, Knacker, Weisswurst ..... any wurst will do really :-)

I can appreciate a good wurst on set times: Currywurst as an after-shopping snack with a piece of bread; a good bratwurst (in Germany with some good senf; in Holland with ketchup and mustard) and a glass of Veltins or Beck's or Kölsch; Knacker I enjoy strangely enough best with a mash of Grünkohl and potatos with some vinegar and a little piece of butter; Weisswurst with -of course- sweet mustard (Süsser Senf - lovely) and a liter of a good Weizenbeer like Paulaner, Erdinger, Spaten or Franzikaner (there are loads of others, which names I forgot).

Bratwurst dreams of one BIG nation where all the bratwursts of the World can unite and call it Bratwurstania, with the national symbol being -you might have guessed it-a sausage :)

If he's your friend

Why do I get the feeling that innocentlady is talking about her own husband? If it were just a friend, I would call him an *sshole, but I would leave his business and troube be his...

Oh shoot, didn't read PolskaDoll's last post - I was too quick again :) Sorry about that, but anyway, I do think that innocentlady is talking about her own husband.

Life / Germans and Poles - Fiction or Myth? [127]

German theutons

But that's the way the cookie crumbles: wars of Germany in the East have always been different than German wars in the West: in the East it was a clash between races: Teutons against Slavs, while in the West it was Germans against Germans; hence German wars in the East have always been more brutal than German wars in the West. Not only in WW2, but also in WW1, which had a more nasty character than the trench-war in the West.

Actually on the note of the name "World War": as a historian, I don't like the term World War 1 and 2 for Germany's attempts to gain hegemony (although WW1 was more of an opportunity by chance due to the last twitches of the dying empire of Austria-Hungary) as France's attempts to gain hegemony in the late 18th, early 19th century were basically also turning into World Wars, considering what was perceived as the World at that time. So, a better description of the conflicts between 1914 and 1945 -the 30-year war of the 20th century- would be WW2 and WW3, strictly speaking.

Nobody asked them if they want ... Stalin told take this houses or die

Nobody asked the Silesian Germans if they wanted to leave. They either expelled them or raped/killed them. This is actually not a very nice part of Polish history, I wonder if the Poles consider their behaviour towards the Silesian Germans in the post-war years still as being justified or do they look back at this episode in shame?

I don't even know what to answer to your question to be perfectly honest

I just could be so? I was just wondering, since there is a history in that city.

Life / Germans and Poles - Fiction or Myth? [127]

I can't really think of any incidents that would make me think that polish - german relationship is not a peaceful one

I didn't say that it was not a peaceful co-existence. It's just that it sometimes strikes me as being somewhat double: a lot of Polish friends of mine would love to visit Germany and maybe even work there, but when I ask them if they speak German, they answer that they don't because they hate the language.

The fact that your dad had a plant in Wroclaw has something to do that Wroclaw used to be Breslau?

Life / Germans and Poles - Fiction or Myth? [127]

Anyway, what I know about German-Polish relationships is that they are at best to be described as a peaceful co-existence. On one hand, a lot of Poles go to work in Germany and have done so since the Revolution, on the other hand they have trouble forgetting what happened in the past, leading eventually up to that shameful show the previous Polish prime minister gave during an EU summit last year. This definitively did no good to the Polish cause.

At least we don't spit into others peoples hair....

Our one who did this was a football player and now trains FC Barcelona. Your one went on to kill about 55 million ppl. Just to compare :)

And Polson: I know and I would like to stick to the topic, but apparently this little Bratwurst thinks he needs to attack me on anything I say about the Gerries. But that episode is closed as far as I'm concerned - let's return to the original topic, good idea :)
