UK, Ireland / National Holiday To Celebrate Britishness Could Be On It's Way [83]

I think Brits should be allowed to have their Britishness Day

A better time to have tried to introduce this would have been about 60 years ago.

then sod them and thats coming from a half-scot, if some people don't want to celebrate it they don't have to, but why spoil everybody elses fun

Then it would technically become "English Day" so why introduce that when there's already St George's day?

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

...but isn't their idea of Poland somewhat skewed by not living there everyday?

Of course. However, the thoughts go both ways. Some think it's becoming a great place to live and others are of the belief that it gets worse. I don't disagree with anybodies views as such but I'll never believe in any system that says people can't vote.

I don't have a problem with someone who has no more ties with Poland not voting, that's fine. However, as is sometimes the case, Poles abroad have close family members in Poland still, parents, siblings etc and I feel they should still be allowed to have a say in how the country is run and I think it would be a sad day if they were ever told they couldn't vote.

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

After reading some of the posts made by Poles (living abroad) on this forum I can assure you that some of them have no clue.

I won't disagree with that statement. It is true though that many who do live in Poland have no clue either so it's hard to say that people who aren't living there are any less clued -up or have any less right to vote.

There can never be a final answer to this.

Fair enough, but there are Polish people abroad who would feel they kept themselves well informed (who may visit Poland throughout the year) and who would feel their knowledge is enough to vote in Polish elections.

There's no way to determine whether a person is knowledgeable enough to vote (lets face it, some of the people who are voting in Poland are not clued up enough).

I would be a little skeptical about that also. People don't always leave a place because they truly want to, circumstances may have been out of their control at the time. They might still care very much about Poland and have family there, so why should they be denied the right to help shape the country? As always it's up to the indiviual whether they vote or note, so I suppose if they didn't care, they could always just not vote but I don't think the right should be taken away from them.

Not having a complete knowledge of current events, issues and of course candidates their votes may do more harm than good.

What if they made an active effort to keep up with the politics and current affairs of Poland? It's easy to do now, especially with the use of the Internet.

This documentary is aired in the UK on BBC2 channel at 9pm on Tuesday 11th March .

Typical, I'll miss it but I'll try and pick it up another time. Is it a new documentary?

UK, Ireland / Polish worker's excuse and a vacuum cleaner (UK) [79]

It's not anti-Polish at all, it just happens to be a Polish guy! Just a pity that the tabloids have nothing better to fill their pages with. Why the Telegraph bothered with it I don't know.

But...er...I wish them both well for the future...

Love / "Let's leave beautiful women for men with poor sexual imagination" [150]

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Beauty is skin deep.

I also agree with that completely. Sometimes someone may not be the prettiest but then you get to know them and right there is a fantastic personality that brings out the beauty.

Sometimes a girl (or guy) can be hot to the eye but have the personality of a slice of ham.

The day is splendid.

No freezing, icy rain in Canada then...oh well...

Life / Polish attitudes towards drinking alcohol [72]

True also when you see groups of Spanish or Italian teenagers here in UK on holiday, they aren't looking for the nearest place that'll sell them booze, generally I find they're looking for the local landmarks.

Life / Polish attitudes towards drinking alcohol [72]

Getting ur kid used to having alcohol every day is a terrible idea!

The general idea is that if the child is used to alcohol and knows what it takes like and how it should be drunk then they won't be so much in a hurry to hurl it down their necks ages 13, 14 etc.

If they have the genetic predisposition to addiction ur kind of jumpstarting them on the path to alcoholism.

Then it'll happen anyway whether or not they'd had a glass of wine at aged 10.

Life / Polish attitudes towards drinking alcohol [72]

Everyone has their own culture

Very true. It's also true that some families will give their 10 or 11 year old child a glass of wine with a meal. Is there a problem with that? I don't think so.

Life / Polish attitudes towards drinking alcohol [72]

yes of course i've been drunk but i don't have an alcohol problem

Getting drunk means drinking to excess. So if a person often sets out to get drunk then they have a problem.

since from January the 1st 2008 i gave up drinking al together :)

Good :)

Love / Is this Polish guy's 'Sister' his wife? [8]

Well, my friend has dark hair and his sister is blonde. He has lots of pictures of her on his phone and in his flat because he misses her. It's easy to tell she is his sister though because she just got married :)

She had a child about two years ago but I don't remember if he returned to Poland for the birth. He may have done.

So it's difficult to tell in your situation though and I think if you want to be sure then you do have to ask him. Be prepared for an answer you don't like.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

they just need some companionship while they are here, but most arent looking for anything more.

That's the impression I got from my friend. He only wanted company and no one truly likes to be lonely.

Everyone has a different opinion and I for one am not bigoted and I dont think most of the other posters on this thread are either.. they are merely conveying their personal experiences and not suggesting that all Polish guys are bad.

I agree. I don't even think that the OP is doing more than sharing her experience and asking for opinions.

You're right, this is a Polish forum so yes, most of the opinions in this thread are going to include stories about Polish men!

the stuff which is written on here says NOTHING about what I know about Poles

Please correct me if I am wrong but you're not a female so I doubt you've had many relationships with Polish men - which is essentially what this thread is about. We know that there are hundreds of good Polish guys out there.

Love / Polish boyfriends [77]

but i kinda agree some Poles are like that

I agree with that too. Then again men from all nationalities behave badly at times.

However, what I have seen recently (not only on the forum) are girls (not Polish) who suddenly declare that they only want a Polish man. Fair enough, but if you limit your scope to one group chances are you won't find happiness and that's what's happening.

Why, suddenly, do they want a Polish guy? Is it more exciting to date someone from a different country? Then if they do date someone from a different country they have to realise there are cultural differences as well and to make the relationship work, they have to work through these but often it is too difficult.

but this seems to be a common thing with Polish guys. maybe its the fact of them being abroad and it makes things very confusing and difficult, or they dont quite know how to get out of a sticky situation without causing any more trouble as its a different culture etc.,

I found out from one male Polish friend recently that when he arrived in the UK three years ago (alone) he reached out for anyone who he could be friends with. He didn't like the feeling of being lonely and he admitted that he dated a friend of a girl at work simply for company and nothing more. He had a girlfriend at home in Poland. The girl here fell for him and he dealt with it by ignoring her texts/calls. He had no idea how to deal with it otherwise.

Life / Anna Name day in Poland? [13]

I found two for me

I still have none. I am also just recovering after that sudden change of avatar! ;)

Most of the time it is the first time the name appears after the birthday.

I can see why people might want to "pick" their name day but why would it mean anything just to pick it. Doesn't it mean something more if you celebrate the first one after your birthday? Or does it really not matter?

Life / Anna Name day in Poland? [13]

As I understood it, your name day is the first one after your birthday so if July is the first one, then yes, I would say that is the one to celebrate.

It is confusing, some names have many names days. Some have none :(

Life / Anna Name day in Poland? [13]

Hmm, I'm also confused then because I thought that you don't choose your name day, it's the first name day after your birthday.
