Life / Car stereo thieves - is this a problem in Poland? [23]

Hello, i was thinking of getting a nice stereo in my car, just a couple speaker, a subwoofer and a couple amps.
My friends tell me not to do it because even if i will install it so that it will not be visible and seem like a standard stereo, people that will here loud music coming from my car will follow me, wait until i park and steal my stereo. Is this exaggerated or should i avoid getting a decent stereo in my car?

What a non-issue. You know that Poles steal everything that even slightly looks Western.

The German joke is: In Schweden gibt es Schwedisches Stahl, In Deutschland Krupps-Stahl und in Polen diebstahl.

(In Sweden you got Swedish steel, in Germany Krupps steel and in Poland they steal)

News / The most spectacular errors in Polish politics. [264]

"Everybody" was limited to nobility though

That's what I meant with "Everybody". Everybody in the Landdag. Everybody who was (in name) part of the Polish government. Even if you were Baron of your own backyard, you would have the opportunity to basically block every decision made. It was the most democratic form of government at the time, but it proved unworkable. And it is still unworkable today. That's why they invented the "dictatorship of the majority".

What you must remember is that well-qualified Poles thought long and hard about their move to the UK. They looked at Sweden and other options but weighed up that the UK presented the best offer.

Seanus, I have to correct you on this one: when Poland joined the EU, it was to be expected that an exodus would follow to the Western states. It was not that Poles, even the well-educated, really had a choice: the only countries they could go were Ireland, Sweden and the UK. There were no other options for them, because the rest of the EU had closed their borders to them. So I wouldn't say they really were spoiled with options and had to think about it really hard.

Oh, and Britain does not have the hegemony anymore since the end of WW1. Sorry, but it's just a Western European country, not a superpower anymore. The US took over.

News / The most spectacular errors in Polish politics. [264]

Elective democracy

Wasn't that the part that EVERYBODY in the government had the right of veto, in practice making Poland unrulable and is the direct cause of the Polish partitions?

Polish political errors:

I think the remarks of the Polish president (or prime minister, one of the twins) about Germany on a very recent EU summit. That annoyed virtually everybody and did the Polish cause not much good. Also his remarks about gays did not help.

Then, usenet its a software like eMule?

No, it's a network. But you indeed need special software to be able to download from there, they are called "newsreaders".

News / Poland Remembers start of WW2 [200]

Without me having to actually research it what was Hollands role in the first WW? I suppose they jumped into bed with Germany and hoped they would be left alone, a puszy nation.

No, only the government was mainly pro-German because of the fantastic power Germany represented AND it was right next door: we share the biggest part of our borders with Germany. 80% of our export went and still goes to Germany. Our language is evolved from the same motherlanguage as German does and there are a couple of more reasons.

It was the Netherlands that took nearly all the Belgian refugees, and I even believe they harboured the biggest number of refugees during WW1, but I am not a 100% sure of that.

They were strictly neutral though. The government may have been pro-German, but they maintained an attitude that they would defend themselves against anyone who would invade them. The British asked them once what they would do when Britain would perform a plan they had to encircle the invading German troops over Dutch soil, and the Dutch government replied that they would defend themselves against ANY foreign army that would step on their territory. If Germany would have used the utmost Southern part of the Netherlands for the von Schlieffen plan, as it originally intended, they would have defended themselves against the Germans. But they didn't say this aloud. Hence the British came to the conclusion that the entire of Holland was pro-German, while in fact only the government was and even so, the government would never be able to actively choose sides as the population would never have accepted it.

News / Poland Remembers start of WW2 [200]

Nah...it was a misunderstanding.

But the bombers were on their way due to the fact that the Germans thought it took too long to conquer the Netherlands.

The Dutch then decidced to help the US. I guess they were still p1ssed about South Africa.

Not only South Africa; Sri Lanka as well and a couple of other things the British took from us under the pretence of "protecting it while we were occupied by France". Britain has, together with France always been much more of an enemy to the Netherlands than Germany actually was. Also for the simple reason that these things happened at a time that Germany didn't exist yet. Reason why they didn't help the Nazis conquer Britain was first of all, they had invaded us and robbed us from our innocense (the Nazis were very much hated in occupied Holland) and secondly, Britain and the Netherlands basically had put aside their differences in the 30's under the threat of Nazi Germany. This was the same reason why Belgium and the Netherlands started to co-operate much more, leading up to the formation of the Benelux in 1949, the model on which the EU is based. And we didn't have to borrow them money, they just took it from us once we were occupied.

Life / Searching for a disco polo song [17]

Well, I want to avoid to download hundreds of disco polo hits and listen to all of them. Besides, I don't know "usenet", sorry...

Well, if you have a decent Inet connex, then it shouldn't take too long as I don't believe there can be more than 100 Disco Polo songs in all. Bad taste is one thing, but I don't believe that even the ppl who make this cr*p are that stupid anyway.

As for usenet, do a search on Google, I am sure you get loads of hits. Usenet is a little parallel to to the Internet. It uses the nntp protocol and is perhaps the oldest form of Inet like networking. Started out as newsgroups and still uses this format. Advantages are: nearly untraceable downloads, faster, much faster than torrents, 99% chance of getting no crap, but the real stuff. All movies appear first on Usenet before they even make it to the torrents. Usenet is maybe a bit too complicated for newbies or Inetbimbos who just know how to click on a link on a site, but it is in my opinion the best way to get stuff for free. Well, not entirely for free. Due to the very nature of Usenet, as it basically is considered a little extra by ISP's on Mainland Europe (here in Ireland they don't even have Newsservers), the options you get with your ISP are good, but you have to be very fast in order to download stuff. Better idea is to subscribe to a good usenetserver for, say $40,= for 3 months and download as much as you like, fast and unlimited. Plus you can virtually find EVERYTHING on Usenet. But check Google for links and sites. I personally use usenetserver.com

. It's up to you.

Movies, music, etc, are delivered to Usenet in the form of attachments to emails. Since the amount of data to attach to an email is limited, you will get the file split up in several .rar archives. For example: if you want to download a DVD of 4,37 GB, they you will most likely get it in 80 .rar files of 50 Megs. Since the .rar files can be broken, making the entire download useless, the posters generally add a certain amout of parity (.par or .par2) files to it. These nifty little files can actually repair broken .rar archives or even replace missing archives as well, providing the poster has made enough of them. And if you ask nicely, they might be willing to make even more for you. Just go check it out.

But to answer the question: Polish men are not different from other men, so most likely if the Spanish tart is hot, they will all think the same; if the tart is ugly, they all also think the same thing.

M-G (gets the feeling on this forum sometimes that everybody regards Polish ppl as something from a different planet, treated with special care and with needs and desires very different from other males or females. In fact, they go to the toilet too, you know)

News / Poland Remembers start of WW2 [200]

(Norway was slightly pro-Great British)
Your point?

How about Quisling?

The Dutch army was in a deplorable state in 1939, despite of being mobilized. The point was that a relatively strong army in 1914 could detoriate in only 25 years to some remnant that wasn't even capable of witholding the German armies for more than 4 days. However, it should be noted that the Nazis bombarded Rotterdam, making it one of the few cities bombarded during the Blitzkrieg phase of the war in order to make a country capitulate. And this bombardment came forth from German frustration that Dutch resistance was a bit stronger than expected, hence it took too long (4 days!) to conquer the country.

USA, Canada / What's the longest a Canadian citizen can stay in Poland without a Visa? [4]

Why don't you simply get a Visa for a year? Might take a while, but saves you the hassle of having to leave the country all the time. But I think that leaving the country doesn't make any difference as Poland is in the EU, and going to Germany for example would still make you present within the EU. I think it would only make a difference if you were to go to Russia. But I am not 100% sure of this.

Somehow, that doesn't surprise me.
I think I am going to drink some good "Reinheitsgebot"-friendly German beer tonight. Also some good, decent Grolsch. And maybe I will throw in a few Tyskie as well. Maybe I will even throw up after all that.

Do you have an army?

Although it may seem strange, but we actually have.
In fact in 1914, if Germany or especially Britain would have attacked the Netherlands, the Dutch army would have been strong enough to beat the British back.

America which is not in Europe

I am sorry that the Dutch army didn't come to the rescue in September '39. Not that it would've been of much use, but it's the idea that counts.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

this is going to take along time to fix!!

It is sad as I have grown to like this country and love the ppl. They are good natured most of the time. Maybe that's the problem. However, I have been hearing quite a few rumours that either this month or the next one there is a general strike planned, supposed to last for a few days and is aimed to bring indeed public life to a stand-still. Let's hope these plans will become real and everybody will join in. Would like to see what happens then.

Real Estate / Foreigners: Please don't buy Polish Land! [823]

What if the Irish simply say "strike"? If everybody joins in and public life comes to a grinding halt, surely the government will at least get a notion that their politics are wrong. It's time to do so as I haven't seen a ppl anywhere that gets so f*cked over by their government and they never protest against it. If they would, things would change, I am sure. In places like France, the UK or the Netherlands this would not be pssbl. Why don't the Irish do that? They were able to curb down the power of the Catholic church this way, so why not with crummy politics?

its mighty hard to live

You're darn right: no pay rise and yet more taxes - literally overnight: Government announces a new tax-rise. It's not gonna start the first of the next month or as per some next month, no, it's gonna kick off at 00:00 hrs, midnight tonight. In March, I got to payslips, one before the new tax and one for the remainder of the month after the new tax.

Love / What are the perceptions of polish towards homosexuality? [106]

I don't think we have more gay ppl than other countries. I think it's just that we do not make a big deal out of it and perhaps lots of gay ppl from other countries come to us because they hardly have to fear (official) proscecution. But I guess it's the same in the UK. Not all Dutch ppl tolerate homosexuals, mind you! There are gay bashers as well in the Netherlands, but unlike some other countries, they go to prison when caught. The Netherlands, but especially the big cities tolerate gay ppl (as they do with certain other groups of ppl - Jews are a good example for that matter) because generally speaking they are richer than non-gay ppl. And what can you do with rich ppl? Right, you can make more money out of them. Jews from Portugal were more welcome than Jews from Eastern Europe because they had more money. And that is the main base for Dutch tolerance: we are a country of merchants and we tolerate ppl most of the time because you can make money out of them. Merchants generally don't have that much morals.

Love / My Perfect Love Story so I thought [73]

but what does a loser mean actually?

Ok, if you insist:

According to the dictionary:

1. a person, team, nation, etc., that loses: The visiting team was the loser in the series.

2. Informal. a. a person who has been convicted of a misdemeanor or, esp., a felony: a two-time loser.
b. a person who has failed at a particular activity: a loser at marriage.
c. someone or something that is marked by consistently or thoroughly bad quality, performance, etc.: Don't bother to see that film, it's a real loser.

3. Slang. a misfit, esp. someone who has never or seldom been successful at a job, personal relationship, etc.

Clearer now?
I always look at the pictures when I look at sites like that and I have a hard time not falling off my chair of laughing when I see the picture and compare it to the description they give of themselves.

I could give more examples of fun like that, but I think that would be hurtful, ah well :)
