Law / Looking to open Vodka Booth in Poland [16]

It's strange that I found a bar in Aberdeen with 20 or so different vodkas and I can't find such a thing here.

Would that have been about 10 years ago? It was a bit fo a flash in the pan trend in the UK, with novelty flavours e.g. chocolate orange, pear drop, vodkas with bits of goldleaf floating in them.

What's stranger is finding Johnnie Walker Blue Label in a small Japanese city but not seeing it in Scotland.

Ah yes, the Japanese - they know their stuff when it comes to a wee dram :)

Who isn't drunk on the streets of Poland?

Biiig sweeping generalisation.

you may also invest in a lawyer and pre pay a bailsman

Sound advice.

Drinking on the streets will only appeal to 13 year olds...

UK, Ireland / Boris Johnson has been declared the Mayor of London [25]

Ken Livingstone?

Plenty. What's right with him?

My particular gripe is his croneyism, and the way that he was spunking money at city hall. I could list loads and loads of examples of first hand experience of this.... the worst one of all being the newspaper (actually it looks like a newspaper, but it is really just a propaganda sheet) that is pushed through my letterbox every month, promoting "brand Ken". This costs around £3 million a year to produce and distribute, of which more than £600,000 comes directly from council tax.

Love / Will he have an affair with me? [17]

first of i can't believe your even thinking about taking it any further.

The point is that there is NOTHING to take further. Her colleague simply took her out to dinner (colleagues and business contacts take me out to dinner all the time - it doesn't mean a thing). He didn't crack onto her, or give indication that he was interested in an affair. It's a silly crush that's all in her head.

No, I had to wake up and attend my place of employment. Didn't have time to do it in the morning and played football straight after work.

Go on then - I'll let you off (even though Mr LC and I got out of bed half an hour earlier to get our vote in LOL!)

If he's married... he's off limits. Dont break up happy homes..... :)

Totally agree.

Sounds like you've got a bit of a crush on this guy, and are reading things into regular things e.g. he took you out for dinner (I'd do the same for any new colleague who'd just moved to my city - male or female) and that he walked you home (this is the sort of thing that my husband would do for a female colleague - especially if she didn't really know her way around).

Get over the silly crush.

Love / Confused English man: is she stringing me along or is she confused? [62]

There's nothing wrong with meeting online, and it sounds like you did a fair bit of cyber flirting, however you really do need to meet up in person in order to suss out your true compatability.

It sounds like things got very intense when you first met, with talks of marriage - but this could have been too much too soon for her - especially as she was still getting over a divorce.

Maybe she is just taking her time and making sure that things are settled in her own life and that her daughter is happy before taking the plunge with somebody else - especially a foreign man who probably has a different background to her.

Take things slowly, and enjoy getting to know her as a friend first - don't rush things. I think that

I am here for 8 weeks, but I would stay forever if things worked out.

is a bold statement and might be scaring her off.

UK, Ireland / English magazines about Poland in UK? [32]

Leaving England to go to England only Spanish (sure, no rain and sun all the time...) meeting the same people all the time? Drinking and eating the same staff as always? Hmmm... not really my kinda thing...

Totally agree with you there - not my bag either.

Perhaps I didn't make my point clear enough.... here's a few examples of what I mean:

I've had loads of great holidays in Canada (among other places). If there was a magazine all about Canada in my local WHSmiths, I'm not convinced that I would buy it.

I'd like to visit Thailand one day. It's not my "dream destination", but somewhere that I'd like to visit at some point in my life. If there was a magazine all about Thailand in my local WHSmiths, I'm not convinced that I would buy it.

At the same time, I'm not particularly bothered about visiting the Caribbean (but if course if you offered me a free trip, then of course I'd take it LOL!). If there was a magazine all about the Caribbean in my local WHSmiths, I'm not convinced that I would buy it.

I still think that there is place in the market re. UK/Polish relations for a magazine that focuses on Polonia in the UK - encouraging British people to think about Polish restaurants in London, try out Polish recipes with ingredients bought in Polish delis in the UK, check out Polish music gigs and festivals etc.

Just comparing it with 4YouK... looks like the second issue is about Tibet rather than Poland. Hmmm.....

Who is the target readership? I can see that it would appeal to somebody like me who visits Poland on business a couple of times a year and has a couple of friends there - though I guess it is a bit of a niche.

Would it persuade Joe Public to think about a couple of weeks on Sopot instead of the annual fortnight on the med? - I doubt it. It might suffer the same identity crisis as the Positively Poland in London later this month.

Nevertheless, it is great to see an attempt at promoting Poland in the UK / encouraging British-Polish relations.

Interesting - not seen this one before (I am central London and like to keen an eye on the media)... where is it distributed?

I appreciate what they are try to do with it - encourage tourism to Poland without attracting the stag party lads :D but I wonder if it would be better in a quarterly rather than monthly format.

Are you involved in this one, or do you have any connections to it?

Publications for English readers - quite a brave move, but maybe they need to rethink the content. I've seen the Irish version of Visit Poland online, which was great in terms of encouraging travel to Poland - but how about encouraging more interaction in Ireland e.g. details of gigs, festivals, food, recipes etc.

I picked up a copy of 4YouK here in London - I think that this was the first edition, and there seemed to be quite a mix of subjects, though not specifically about Poland.

So what are your faves? My understanding is that there are two main publishers in London: Cooltura and Fortis (Laif, Polish Express, Panorama) - do UK Poles have a preference?

UK, Ireland / BBC article on Polish food in the UK [22]

There was a book that I didn't buy but I wish I had. I was in Glasgow's rail station and I saw a book about Tesco's various malfeasances and misdemeanours. I like Tesco but that book may have changed my mind

There are several books along this theme - you should read them.... very enlightening. And yes, I do try to avoid Tesco (except when I'm v. busy and run out of milk for my coffee, and the nearest place is Tesco).

Indeed, but no mention of Charlie Boy and the horse-faced one visiting a strip club, or enjoying a few pints at the Bull pub.

And often you want to buy and try everything ;)

Tell me about it... I wanted to clear the shelves and take it all home :)

There seemed to be lots of yoghurty type things as well as packet desserts that looked a bit like Angel Delight.

So they travel to Jamaica from Great Britain for a hen's party?

Nah, it's typically pairs of divorcees in their 50s and 60s rather than hens in their 20s and 30s. Tunisia is popular too - lots of attention from toy-boy waiters looking for a meal ticket or visa.

Not a bad idea - I cook most of my meals from scratch anyway, however I just facied something a bit different. I'd been in Hammersmith for a meeting, and had to rush back to my office in East London, but stopped at the Polish Deli for about 5 mins... I had no idea what to buy....

Are these people (your girlfriend's brother's fiance's parents... gosh, I think you need to draw us a tree diagram) Polish? I'm confused...

Interesting - I stocked up on lots of goodies from a deli in Hammersmith last time I was there.... loved the pierogie, which made a reasonable dinner for two for a quid :) though less keen on the juniper sausage which was pretty lardy.

Any top tips for next time would be much appreciated....
