Life / WHERE HAVE ALL THE KOLĘDNICY (carollers) GONE? [2]

not selling Polish carolling costumes

The only place that you will see anything close to this is in the countryside.

When so many people live in flats, and carol singers can't get past the front door... it's pointless.

Polonius3, have you ever been to Poland ? Most of your posts would suggest not.

Life / WHAT ABOUT THANKSGIVING (ŚWIĘTO DZIĘKCZYNIENIA) IN POLAND? [52]

thanksgiving is totaly an american thing and it has 0 to do with poland. poland has had no pilgrims or indians or turkeys.

while this is true.

St. Patrick wasn't a Polish saint who banished snakes from Ireland. Yet some still celebrate St. Patrick's Day... in the Irish fashion.

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

with three cash registers, but you can ONLY buy bread from one, ONLY drinks from the other and ONLY cheese and milk from the other.

I was still dealing with this sort of thing as little as two or three years ago.

The shop is now out of business.

Life / muslim community in poland [430]

can anyone tell me which area of poland has the most number of muslim people living there

There is a Muslim community in Warsaw. They mix with other religions, share special days etc.

I'm sorry I cant remember where I read about them, but it was on a Polish news website.

I do remember that an important part of their success was intergration.

Life / Paulina Lenda, Polish singer, 15 years old -- astonishing [18]

she sounds a bit like a man... lol

I saw her live on telly. 1. I thought she was much older. 2. I thought she was a bloke.
After speaking to people in the following days about the programme... it seems others found something odd about her too.

News / Is it time to tighten gun laws in Poland? [146]

Is it time to tighten gun laws in Poland?

I don't see any need to change the law because of one idiot.

The article doesn't say if the weapon was gas powered. If it was then she is very fortunate not to have suffered serious injury.

Remember this was an air-rifle, not a Magnum 44

Travel / Typical Polish Weather In December [15]

Does Warsaw typically have snowfall in December?

There hasn't been much snow in recent years. Once again, it depends on the day.

Actually, the colder it is, the less snow we get.

When it is around 0 degrees the snowflakes are puffed up and large.

When it is -10 the snowflakes are tight and compact. More like very small hail.

Unless there is a dramatic change in the weather, it's very warm here for the time of year, you won't see much snow in the city.

...................................................................... ..................
But wait for a second opinion and ask again closer to the time.

Travel / Typical Polish Weather In December [15]

Is it usually very cold/snowy in Poland in December?

We've had both the coldest and warmest winters in Poland in recent years.

You will have to rely on the long range weather forecast nearer the point of departure.

Whatever the weather. It will be cold.

Work / Do you need any credentials to become a proofreader in Poland? [4]

Do you need any credentials to become a proofreader in Poland?

What is a proofreader ?

Is it someone who checks a text or letter ?

Or is it someone who works for a publishing house, working on manuscripts of great importance ?

Experience and a proven record are what you need. A knowledge of all subjects also helps.

Thirteen escaped... one jumping from the third floor.

News / Another Case Of Intentional HIV Infections in Poland [73]

[half quote=Seanus] I don't know about condom sales [half quote]

They can be bought in most places... in many flavours and colours.

People buy them openly, which would suggest that the church doesn't have a lot of influence with regard to condoms.

Life / A trip to a Polish supermarket [136]

In the bigger stores in Poland is it normal to have 23 checkouts but only ever about 7 in operation (like it is here)?

not normal at all. if there are as few as twenty or thirty customers than there will only be one checkout open.

Genealogy / My grandmothers: Zbysheski and Simpsi. [7]

maria,

If you are new to genealogy / family history.

When you do a search... only put in surname... see what you get... then add to it.

It's a big mistake to fill in all the boxes. :)

You might find results come up... such as: Russian, Austrian, German. This is because of Polish partition.

It's always worthwhile doing a wikipedia search of Polish history before researching Poland.

I apologize, if I'm stating the obvious.

Genealogy / My grandmothers: Zbysheski and Simpsi. [7]

The usual from me:

JewishGen for name search and place search. plus other info.

Check: ellis island records. do a name search... if nothing exists it will bring up alternative spellings, which might help.

ancestry.com

genealogy.com

I'd like to help more, but my computer is in a bad state of repair, which means that I can't do an effective search for you.

Love / Moved to Poland to my younger boyfriend, now got sick; he's got a new one [194]

You have to comply with him in order to make him act predictably.

A clever mind in a position of power, maybe.

Woman is very worried and I suspect will have difficulty keeping it together.

Give her advice on how to avoid contact or how to control it. Without her having to read a book on psychology first.

Love / Moved to Poland to my younger boyfriend, now got sick; he's got a new one [194]

how can i put him off coming tomorrow-what can i say to him?

You don't have to say anything, you don't have to open the door, you don't have to be at home.

Send him an e-mail telling him your sick/out of town/ whatever and that you will be able to sit down and discuss things on Sunday.

I have to be honest and say that I think he is all mouth, but could become a little awkward. Read that as you will.

Love / Moved to Poland to my younger boyfriend, now got sick; he's got a new one [194]

Ok..lets have some voluteers for a rescue mission....i am ready to set off to Gydinia...anyone else...?

I'm too far away.

I don't think she needs rescuing. She just has to be out of the house when he calls... unless he has a door key... then there might be a problem.

He is not going to travel a great distance and then sit up all night waiting. And if he does she can call the police and they will take care of it. The police will have to respond to the call, if it happens.

Let's get it right and not over react. It can be done legally.

i will let him drive but i wont be there-and after tomorrow

Are you nuts. Do not see him tomorrow at all.

If you are thinking of having a final word. Don't.

If you must have revenge... do it from a safe distance.

Or better still, on the advice of peers here... not at all... just walk away.

edit: You could arrange to have one or two large, male friends as guests tomorrow.

UK, Ireland / Anyone fed up with the quality of pierogi available in the UK shops? [7]

Anyone fed up with the quality of pierogi available in the shops?

You could explain to the shopkeeper that he/she might sell more, if the brands were changed.

You could try and make an effort to find time to make your own.

If they are that important to you you could ask a friend to make them.

You could shop around for a better product.

I imagine your next thread will be about the quality of bigos. Get a life.
