UK, Ireland / Integrating Polish people into the British society [150]

Getting and holding down a job is an inherently complicated process these days. With some prospective applications, u go through step after step, just to get a job and be urself. Wow, thanks, u mean I've got licence to be myself, super!!

The job market has changed hugely, beyond recognition for some. It is a fact that companies have been seeking to minimise overheads for so long now, immigrants offer them just that. Why should they pay for a Brit who may not have anything better to offer? Brits should not be strangers to this, Thatcher drafted it in way back in 1987, or was it 1989? CCT, compulsory competitive tendering, the idea that services would be, for all intents and purposes, auctioned off to the best bidder. There are so many people chasing so few jobs, economic forces will undoubtedly play their part. Companies benefit and the Poles have a decent skill-set to improve it. If Brits are so good, they will keep the plum jobs.

Food / Polish romantic dinner (suggestions)? [30]

Carp is disgusting. I'm a fan of most fish, but carp is bland and filled with killer bones.

Not much romantic about that

UK, Ireland / Benefits for separated Polish wife and 2 kids in the UK [90]

In Scotland, the process is quite thorough. I was on JSA for a couple of months and I was interviewed as to the active steps I was taking to get work. I had to furnish them with newspaper clippings and outline my action plan. Hmm...a hullaballoo just to get pocket change. It may be a more arduous process for those who need the money more.

The Poles appreciate fish. Just don't make him carp, it's for wigilia, a Xmas time dish.

Panga is popular, as is salmon. Some of the best salmon in the world is from Norway, and I say that as a Scot whose country also produces prime cuts of it.

Yeah, go with fish

Yeah, but it's amazing how we precisely attach value to any given job. Creating false people who think they are more important than others cuz of their price tag. Look at teachers, they serve an excellent social utility function if they are worth their salt but don't receive great financial remuneration. I'm sorry, jobs are being filled and it is merely incidental that wages are going down. Nobody said that the economy was a perfect concept.

Living in a different country brings with it new challenges. Maybe many Poles are happy to barely pay their way but be in a new environment.

In Scotland, there are clubs and societies devoted to this process. It is largely centred on linguistic development but there are other aspects to it to.

Mister H, do the cleaners not do their job well? They have a function in society too, being of more practical benefit than many 'so-called' academics.

There are many Brits with fluent English who don't live "somewhere decent".

News / Apology to Russians for Osetia and American missile base [78]

Definitely not. No one, well maybe McCain, wants a return to a Cold War scenario. We need to understand the Russian predicament more. America just seized an opportunity to jump on them. Russia at least tried to be pragmatic. If Bush is such a principled man, believing in territorial integrity being golden, he should've made a stand against Russia as he maintains that the above 2 are part of Georgia.

In his heart, he knows that Russia were redressing the balance, having not been so harsh in their criticism of the West for either Kosovo or Iraq. He could have castigated them for that.

History / September 1st 1939, A day to remember [10]

Here here!! Well, they fought for the defeat of Nazi Germany, more than for Poland tho.

Subsequent events bore that out.

Anyway, nice sentiment

News / Abkhazia and South Ossetia are independent states now! Poland reaction? [236]

Well, if it is against international law, as u propose, why isn't Russia being taken to some form of court?

Why not? Because international law is a joke. How law is swept to one side in the face of political maneuvering.

Where was the objection from the two states? Sure, there should've been some form of referendum, consonant with democratic process, but human's lack of caring has been exposed. If it were so abhorrent and anathema to international law, where was the great international response?

Benefits help redress inequities in society. They are also practical in alleviating burdens. We, as consumers, don't directly control economic forces. Why, through the mismanagement of others and the unpredictability of market forces, should we fork out hand over fist for things which are overpriced? Benefits help the very real reality that life costs are spiralling out of control for many.

I see what noimmi is saying tho. The British government, moving towards recession, has dug its own grave.

The conclusion? It's a complicated issue!!

Travel / BIKING in POLAND [75]

I was out today on my Mongoose. The countryside here is so nice. U can ride freely and soak up the sights. There are many nice little shops u can unearth and enjoy. The forests are well maintained and bear free, lol.

One of Poland's strong points is designating cycling routes

News / Abkhazia and South Ossetia are independent states now! Poland reaction? [236]

On the contrary my friend, Russia had the right to do this. They have stood by for too long and let Kosovo and Iraq happen. Kosovo and Iraq were never Allied territory, Georgia WAS once part of Russia, Stalin was born there in fact.

They followed through on democratic process, as an American u can have no objection to that. The truth is that these regions wanted independence. Rumour has it that ethnic cleansing was taking place. Russia now has a plan to unite the two Ossetia's to name it Alanina or sth like that. Good on them. Ossetia will become an autonomous unit.

It was an opportune moment, much attention was being focussed on the Olympics. Russian troops are withdrawing AND ensuring that these regions have a voice.

Life / First Racial Attack for me in Poland [158]

Yes, but many Slavs matched the Aryan criteria. Blond hair, physically strong with blue eyes. Hitler was hardly the model Aryan either.

Who cares what the Nazis thought, they were purists without any concept of diversification and acceptance.

UK, Ireland / The Daily snot rag (Mail) removes anti-Polish content [30]

Osioł IS English, little girl. And a damn fine gentleman too. Telefonitika is right. Stop bringing nationality into it. Judge people for being people, regardless of nationality. Listen to David Gilmour's song, On the Turning Away. There are MANY English people whom I admire that take a stance opposite 2 urs.

Go and speak to Polish people's faces. U c that big guy with the big arms, go and tell him that his country stinks and watch his reaction.

What kind of people murder, little girl? Tell me that. What does that tell u about the Brits who do it? The truth is, the Poles woke u up from ur apathy and ignorance.

History / A POLE, Jan from Kolno, DISCOVERED AMERICA [5]

sispain.org/english/history/discover.html

I think u will find that it was Columbus who discovered it

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Discovery_of_America

No mention of ur lad there sonny jim

John Scolvus (also known as Ioannis Scolvenius, Iohannes Scolvus Polonus, German: Johannes Scolnus, Polish: Jan z Kolna) was a semi-legendary sailor c. 1470-80.

It has been claimed that he was among the first Europeans to reach the shores of the Americas prior to Columbus in 1476 as steersman of Didrik Pining, although this view is not supported by genuine evidence.[1]

Wow, I bet that's a bit of a choker 4 ya

A slap in the face to Bush who regarded them as part of Georgia. Bush talks about democracy and makes a mockery of it in his own country and abroad. The majority of people there wanted independence and it has now been conferred on them.

I don't see a Russian presence as being detrimental. After all, how long are American troops gonna occupy Iraqi space for?
