Love / do polish girls consider a english man a good catch ? [126]

I don't know of too many examples so it's difficult to pass judgement.

Maybe it's just the people that I know / have met over the years... I do have to stress that I do know a couple of mixed nationalisty couples who are a really good match and have a balanced relationship.

It's just when the relation isn't balanced (Ukrainian mail-oder brides looking for a meal-ticket is the extreme end of the scale) that I pull a funny face.

I think some of my friends would be interested in moving ;-)

LOL!!

so a young pretty girl may be more inclined to overlook the fact that her English catch is old , bald , fat , and lacking in social skills....

Hahahaha - I saw so much of that in Moscow. Some of the stunning young ladies dripping diamonds and head to toe in designer lables would never have looked twice at their other American / British husbands if it weren't for the fact that they were filthy rich :D

Thai bride anyone? I love the Little Britain sketches, says it all really ;0

Quality :D

UK, Ireland / British celebs that are bigger in Poland than in Britain [49]

I love travelling around Germany as much as I love travelling around Poland.... a lady of simple tastes -I don't feel the need to treck around Cambodia or the tropical rain forests, me.

I bet these bands have a right old laugh touring around Europe. A bit like Still Crazy, that film with Jimmy Nail and Bill Nighey a few years ago.

although he is a big star in Germany now

Loads of musicians end up in Germany - have just been looking at some of the bands on this website: sounds-promotion.de/?mod=artists&lang=en

Travel / Best way to get from London to Olsztyn [7]

I think you mean fly TO Gdansk , not from...?

D'Oh!! Yes, that's what I meant... that serves me right for being up so early in the morning.

I really appreciate the offer, and may takle you up on it :) In the meantime am just planning the route to justify making the trip if you see what I mean.

Law / Opening a gym in Gdańsk [30]

wannabe PE teachers are a turn off.

The most obnoxious staff at my gym are the semi-pro sportsmen... footballers and rugby players etc. They are totally disinterested and just give the impression that they would rather be anywhere else than helping overweight office-workers get a good technique at press-ups in the circuit training class.

The best ones are the ex millitary guys - they have a real no-nonsense approach ("come on LC, give me ten more full press-ups... don't be soft... you know you can do it" etc.)

Cardio Cinema

I once fell off a treadmill because I was laughing at On the Buses :D

I've been a member of various gyms over the years, and I believe that friendly staff / trainers are the way forward. I once stropped out of an aerobics class in Germany when a cow of an instructor singled me out and said that I was uncoordinated :(

I like classes - the Les Mills ones are really popular (Body Pump, Body Step, RPM, Body Balance, Body Attack etc), and would definately be a good selling point. I wouldn't join a gym that didn't have Body Pump on the timetable.

Keep the classes fresh and change the timetable regularly - but try to avoid gimmicks like drums alive (hitting a swiss ball with a drum stick... hmmm... what kind of a workout is that??). If you think that I made this up, here's a link:

Providing towels is also a plus, as is free shower gel (in dispensers) in the showers. Am not too bothered about free body lotion and cotton buds.

Are PowerPlates popular in Poland? They're big here in London, but I get the impression that they're just a bit of a gimmick. I've used them a few times, but didn't really feel much benefit.

Travel / Nice place to holiday in the North of Poland? [26]

i recommend lalala as one of the funkier alternative places to stay in sopot

I was there a few weeks ago - it was brilliant! I really recommend it. Funky room, and friendly staff - and the bar is quite lively place to hang out at night.

The only downside is that its not really in the town centre, so there's about a 20 walk (30 if you're in heels... 40 if you're in heels and you get a bit lost), though a cab is only a couple of zloty.

Life / Customer Service in Poland, what are your experiences? [106]

I was in Poland recently and had a funny experience...

Was in a bar which had a really crap layout - three massive booths that would sit a group of about 8 people, and then no other seats. One of the booths had a reserved sign on the table.

I watched a couple of groups come in, sit down and then leave minutes later. I then decided to sit down at the booth - even though there were only two of us (Mr LC and me).

The manager came up to me, and told me that the table was reserved and that I couldn't sit there. I asked if I could sit there until the people who had made the reservation turned up, explaining that I would have no problem in moving once they arrived.

The manager (just a young guy - mid to late 20s, I guess) insisted that "rules were rules". Even though I suggested that it would look good to have all of the booths full (because they were all in the window, so would make the bar look busy and lively), he just kept insisting that rules were rules.... <sigh>

Love / do polish girls consider a english man a good catch ? [126]

JustysiaS:
depends on the man! they're not all the same you know...
Just cut and paste Justysia's quote. You can also change the word 'man' into 'woman' and add 'Polish' or any other nationality as you wish... miraculously it will answer most of the relationship threads on here.

Totally agree...

One interesting point though... I notice that quite a few English guys that I know who have a non-British wife or girlfriend (by no means all - but certainly a significant number) seem to be a bit... um... lacking in social skills... and er... somehow socially flawed. And usually, their wife / girlfreind are often waaaay out of their league. But it's like the things about them that would turn the average British girl off seen to go unnoticed by the non-British girls.

A bit of a ramble, but does anyone agree with me?

Travel / Best way to get from London to Olsztyn [7]

Hi there - I hope that this isn't too much of a dumb question, but how do I get from London to Iława, near Olsztyn?

I am guessing that I'll have to fly from Gdansk and then get a train... (would rather not hire a car and drive it). Anyone got any thoughts on this journey? Is it going to be epic, with lots of changes etc?

News / Fire in hostel in north west Poland kills 21. [18]

How very, very sad.

Russia seems to suffer such tradgedies often , and mainly due to poor electrical safety....Whatever the cause its so sad that people who are already having a hard time have been killed and injured....

Completely agree :(

Travel / I am free - Hello Poland. Need advice about travelling in Poland. [16]

An interesting way to visit Nowa Huta is to go on a Crazy Tour with the Crazy Guides (google them). They are really fun guys with a real passion and knowldge for Nowa Huta and communist history. They drive visitors around the district in funky trabants, and take them intyo cafes etc.

Travel / "Ryanair cuts 11 routes to Poland" [29]

I actually quite like Ryan Air - they had really made Poland much more accessable. Everyone grips about them, but hey - you get what you pay for.

I've flown with LOT too, and they're fine as an airline, however their flights are all from Heathrow, which is a bit of a schlep for me. Standsted is more convenient for me, as I live in East London.

I was planning on taking my mum to Kolobrzeg this Summer - she lives near Bristol, so it would have been great for her to get a flight from Bristol to Szczecin and I'd meet here there. Back to the drawing board now...

Language / What do you find difficult about learning Polish? [98]

For me, it's all about finding the time. I know that the best approach is to do a little bit every day, but I always end up doing my homework on the tube on the way in to class :(

I am very fortunate that I work in a very Polish environment, so I come into contyact with the language every day, but I still need to get used to the grammar rules and build up my vocab.
