History / Poland has paid £68 Million for helping UK in WW2 [168]
Yes, we borrowed that amount in 1945 but having just paid off the last installment in Dec 06, with interest it amounted to a whopping £40 Billion. And that's POUNDS, not dollars!!!!. I misunderstood your post Frank, I was just going by the BBC news report I watched on the day the debt was finally paid off. My apologies mate - sorry about the confusion!
Way...as you can see it was as below...plus another £1.2 billion from canada!
"In 1945 Britain borrowed $4.34bn from the US consisting of a $3.75bn line of credit and a "lend-lease" loan facility of $586m. The following year the government agreed a $1.185bn line of credit loan from Canada."
The USA war effort was huge, relative to the overall Western effort.....but paltry compared to the Russian........the numbers killed back that up..........80% of all German war casualties killed by the Russians.....!

Love / My Polish boyfriend is a mamas boy what should i do? [28]
The bloke is 20 for christ sake! I was a bloody nightmare when I was 20 and I turned out OK - erm, at least my shrink and parole officer keep telling me!!!!! (Joke!!!)
I'm sure he will grow up in time, maybe he is rebelling so much because his Mother treats him like he is still 5!!!!! My Mother was the same so I NEVER told her what I was doing, where I was, who I was with - and as a result she let go of me and let me find my own way in life. I can guarantee that we have a better, stronger relationship because she allowed me to live MY life - needless to say, once she did let me live MY life, I let her back in again!!!! It doesn't sound to me like he's a Mummy's boy, more like the fact that his Mother won't let him find his own way in life and let him lead HIS OWN LIFE!!!
Sorry to disagree with the general consensus of this thread but I'm just speaking from personal experience. Now, Lyn, where you fit into all this is up to you both. If he is allowed to live his own life and continues to be reckless, selfish and stupid (ie drink driving) then I'd seriously reconsider your future together, but if all this stems from the fact that he is rebelling against a very overprotective Mother then it's hardly his fault. BUT, if this is the case, you may also want to reconsider your future together - who want's a Mother in Law like that!!! LOL

Not even the US would dream of taking on Russia - that's what the cold war was all about!
As for Russia's action with the gas, I guess the EU (as Russia is part of it now) will try and do something to sanction Russia's actions over time but when you start talking about one of the major driving forces of the developed world (gas etc) - time is something we don't have. Sure it will affect the rest of the EU - and as a knock on consequence will affect the economic stability of gas prices globally. You mark my words, something bad will come of it, eventually!!!!

Where I live there are many poles, I can pick up on their accents walking down the street. We even have a bar with a pole in it - girls dance around it naked on some nights of the week :)
