Language / Difference between Polish Imperf. and Perf. forms "pierdolic" [58]

Woah, seriously in-depth answer. I'm gonna have to read a little everyday to understand it...

As soon as i figure out what a verb is... (English schooling is rubbish!)

Thanks for both the question and the first answer, i'm studying this myself at the moment and from a 'dumb English language' perspective, its bloody tough!

Genealogy / Female names ending in 'A'.... why? [23]

Crackinga responsa peoplesa!

And i didnt know about the second names, its always good to learn something new but would this mean if i married a Polish girl in Poland then she would have an altered version of my second name? or would i have to be Polish too?

Genealogy / Female names ending in 'A'.... why? [23]

Yeah i get the whole feminine thing but still, why?

what came first? the names or the language? what dictates that there should be a difference?

As the plucky Spurs fan up there says: we do have male and female names here too, but there isnt anything that signifies masculine or feminine about them.

My friend pointed it out to me thats all, and without being told i hadnt noticed before, once i knew it became obvious and curiosity is eating me now!!

Sorry to be 'foreign' about it but it just sounds strange to me. Are we saying that, like, 'A' is a chick? and 'E' is a bloke?

Would their love-child therefore be the letter æ?

Thanks for replies.

(Ooh, its snowing outside!!)

Language / free polish -english dictionary online [52]

A look around this section should give you what you want, dont be deterred by a slow response but this question seems to get asked a couple of times a week!

This thread has some good stuff in it, did you mean online or an actual book?

polish.slavic.pitt.edu/dictionary.pdf
This is a very good PDF dictionary for your PC, its not comprehensive but its a good start and easy to use.

Some online dictionary/translation tools:

dict.pl/dict_iso
polish-dictionary.com
tranexp.com:2000/Translate/result.shtml]Inter-Tran

A guide to letters and words on video. (a lot of hard work done by someone on here, nuff respec!)

polish.slavic.pitt.edu - A much praised site that should help with everything else.

I started with the Pimsleur audio program, good for your MP3 player to learn anytime/anywhere and will get you started on the basics and with pronunciation.

It isnt cheap... unless you find it in a torrent somewhere.... *innocence-whistles*

I've only been learning for a couple of months in the precious little time i have to spare, but last night i had a great chance to test myself and it felt great to be able to communicate! (albeit on a very basic level so far!) Good encouragement to carry on.

Of all the links i give above, i have found the best place to come is here!

powodzenia!

Life / Those Stella Artois Ads (filmed in Poland) [28]

In the Uk we call it "wife beater"

I was just about to post this!!

Drank a lot of it in my late teens, evil, evil stuff....

What makes it worse is that i cannot think of a beer that smells so much worse the second time you see it, if you know what i mean...

Love / So i am in love with a polish guy..... [20]

I think you had a right to ask the guy that made the remark, did he reply in the end?

Your defensiveness is natural, i guess you really like this guy huh?

Love / So i am in love with a polish guy..... [20]

It could have been meant innocently, as i've said before and was touched on above:
Us men do tend to say stupid things sometimes without meaning to.

I know what i think from reading it, but dont cast aspersions just yet, this Police friend of yours might be gay and have a thing for foreign men, it could have been a compliment!

Ok maybe not, but it is a rather open comment. Again like they said above, either judge this guy on what he has said/done before, or dont judge him at all until he responds.

And either way don't let it get to you, there are stupid people in this world, i'm sure you've met worse.

Good luck, i'm happy you're so happy otherwise :-)

Love / What is Sexy to men and women in Poland? [101]

Yeah I have to admit the accent is totally mesmerising, This girl i was seeing recently is still learning English so her accent is really strong, and i found the broken-English she spoke just made it better!!

Sadly i doubt i'll see her again after a foolish drunken text reply i sent on Saturday night...

not very sexy at all...

*for-shame of the stupid man*

Love / What is Sexy to men and women in Poland? [101]

i did say ;-) ...

But there you go off topic again, so as this MUST be about you, what kind of hair do you like for a man? in fact: what do you consider 'good hair' for women also?

Love / What is Sexy to men and women in Poland? [101]

Ooh! thats rather assuming isnt it?

Here i am, just responding to the views of someones opinion i value. You have my respect from your replies to my inane posts, but no. Obviously i am a man so i must have some kind of sinister motive right?

Tsk tsk girl, i appreciate your flirting with me but please, you have a boyfriend to think about! now lets not let this go any further off topic hmm? ;-)

::-Snaps back to the subject-::

So, what kind of hair and hair styles do you guys and girls find attractive then?
coz, like, i just cut mine and am about to dye it again, coincidently....

Seriously though: Long? short? curly? straight? what attracts or repels you all?

sometimes shouting is the only way to make you lot listen and take it all in

*well-trained*

Love / What is Sexy to men and women in Poland? [101]

probably a polished Brit, or a British pole.

British Pole! *giggles* think i can help there...

My philosophy built from my experience is this:

"All Women are Crazy, all Men are Stupid"

Hey i dont make the rules, its nature. You want a good example? Adam and Eve.

Anyway, sexy? for me aesthetically its the eyes, happy fun eyes and a smile that matches. You Polish girls have amazing eyes (well the ones i've seen at least)

Inside its all about honesty and open-mindedness. Oh and tolerance: I am a man which means i will naturally do stupid things from time-to-time. We dont mean to, we dont do it to hurt you gals it just happens, please dont shout at us!

Oh and hair, got to have good hair!

Love / Brit working in Poland - asking this Polish lady if she's in a relationship? [114]

thats great, but whats the latest news?!?!

I did a bad thing today, i got drunk with friends which is great and all, except she text me and i think my text back may have been a little 'drink assisted' and somewhere along the lines of:

"Are you interested or not?"
I say think because i cant remember what i wrote!

I'm not here to hi-jack your thread dude so i promise this is the last i post on my own problem, but what the hell should i do now?!

Should i text her tomorrow with a pre-emptive apology?

And seriously man, how is your situation going? I'm expecting big things from you and my own confidence depends on your results!!

So no pressure then...

::::Me update::::

Whoots!!! she wants me, she really wants me!!! had a great night, evil-text wasnt so bad after all (i had a chance to read it and it was quite sweet! i'm nice when drunk :) had a dance and a chat, parted ways as friends but later she text me to suggest more!

I would be the happiest bunny in the world right now but sadly, i met another girl before she got there!! now my head is back to square-one (did not pass Go! did not collect 200 złotych). Like buses i tells ya.
Wildrover where are you??

I really wanna know how things are with you right now, we need an update!!

On a brighter note, i discovered my Polish is much better ;-)

Love / Brit working in Poland - asking this Polish lady if she's in a relationship? [114]

Lots of stuff....

Aww i just see this thread, i'm in a very very similar position mate, only in England.

She is the reason i started learning Polish, we only been on a handful of dates but things have been from great, to nothing, to great, to nothing again. I managed to forget it last time and move on, carried on with the language because i'm enjoying learning it and all was cool.

Then after another month i start getting ominous messages again on *add generic networking site here*. We trade a few pleasantries and last night i text her to ask if she was free, but no reply.

I'd be happier if she told me to feck off, this 'limbo' business sucks man, it really does.

Big hug in your direction wildrover, I hope you get yours.

Feedback / Forum times? a noob question perhaps... [20]

Then for a while he lived with Bigfoot, who taught him Polish, Kung-fu and Origami.
So he ventured into the world to spead his teachings, but realised sitting in front of a computer screen was far less effort than martial arts or paper folding, and as such we all are bless'ed by his holy laziness.... or something.

So year thanks, i think my question has been answered....

Vista will be fine in another few months, XP was a pain too until Service Pack 2.

Have you tried right-clicking on the .exe or shortcut, selecting 'Preferances' and running the program in compatibility mode:XP?

Or burning to disk and running from that?

And while we are on the subject, what is this prog you speak of? is it any good? I just started learning so any help is good ;-)

Life / I feel the gay rights movement is constrained Poland [90]

you're mixing two concepts.
Love doesn't require sex, neither does sex require love. I was writing about biology, not about a concept called love, which btw, according to a saying I heard somewhere, [love] is a trick nature plays on us to ensure perpetuation of the species. That "rule", obviously, doesn't apply to gays ;)

Actually, in RCC it does make sense. According to the doctrine, extramarital sex is not legit. Gays can;t get married, ergo their sex is by definition illegal in RCC.

I see your points, but this is gonna start getting silly soon. And i wouldnt say its me mixing concepts, the question i think was "is being gay the norm?"

If 'Gays' cannot get married, then there is, in effect, no such thing as extra-marrital anything for them.

It will bring us back to Religion again, and i'm getting dizzy from all these circles we're running in!

Life / I feel the gay rights movement is constrained Poland [90]

i might not be right so if anyone knows different then correct me, but if you get married in a catholic church its your duty to concieve children and if your partner has hidden the fact that they cant concieve, you can easily get the marriage annulled.

Wow thats a bit harsh!

Although if we look in the rule book...

Most Common Catholic Wedding Vow

"I, _______, take you, ________, for my lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and health, until death do us part."

It doesn't really say yes, and it doesn't really say no! he he...
