USA, Canada / advice on where to live in Canada [64]

50$ per hour as an electrician? NO WAY really? In cali u make 30$ at best maybe up to 40 if ur lucky. Plumbing is the trade industry to be in if u want $ u can make 70-90 an hour in cali no problem. I was actually considering it for a while because one of my friends dads who is a master plumber wanted to pass his business onto some1 and take on an apprentice and he makes 150k+ a year. Some years I guess he went up to 300k. There is more of a demand for plumbing though because more stuff goes wrong with it. When they aren't building new houses it can b hard to find work as an electrician.

A few of my parent's friends are electricians and they make a very decent living. I think it depends on what type of electrician; construction electricians are in demand so they're making a lot of money. Pretty much any job related to construction is an opportunity for money. Parts of Toronto are really old so flipping, renovation and construction are all huge potential money-making industries. Plus, cities surrounding Toronto are starting to grow, so those jobs are very much in demand. My dad's a contractor that specializes in bathrooms and he charges per job rather than per hour. He charges at competitive rates and still makes thousands weekly.

Old people are awesome. I loved being with my grandparents when i was younger because they spoiled us so well :)

As for satisfying my 8 inch clarinet playing will satisfy her every day ;). I know that isn't wat u meant but i just had to add that in.

I have been with my GF for a little over a year now. She won't disagree with me because she has this whole male superiority stigma. She won't EVER talk back to her dad or her older brother or grandpa. So she won't ever talk back to me. In my GF's family women r supposed to serve men. I know u'll say it's bad but it is just how it is in her family. It's kind of nice as long as ur not the one doing the serving.

In my family, my mom serves everyone dinner every night, but she also completely dominates everyone. My mom is full-time teacher, runs my dads business (plus the extra business of flipping houses), and still does the cooking and cleaning. She is a super woman, but she can also be super terrifying.

Its odd that you ended up with the Polish girl that doesn`t talk back or say whats on her mind. Polish women may serve certain gender roles, but they`re usually more than ready to argue with something they disagree with.

Her brother is going to be an interesting case though since he works a rinky dinky job as an electrician for 20 buxx an hour and his fiance is a pharmacist which makes 60$ an hour. She works about 50 hours a week and they don't live together yet even though they have a house. An expensive one 2 at 600,000. I am really hoping he steps up to a better job because otherwise it's going to b very hard on his future wife.

There is NO way they could make the payment on their house without her working. His salary probably wouldn't even cover the payment on that house let alone necessities. I am going to lose all respect for him if his wife has to clean the house, cook, raise the kids and be the primary source of income. She won't even be able to take a maternity leave because of the fat house payment.

Wow, that really sucks for him. Here, he`d be making $50+ per hour, no problem. My friend`s boyfriend is a custodian at an elementary school and he makes about 20 per hour, and gets benefits (no Polish cleaner jokes please because they`re both Portuguese)

If he`s young he could just be starting out. Is there a market for electrician`s or are there too many in Cali? Maybe he should look for a different labour job that pays more.

It would definitely be an embarrassment for his family if he stayed home. If that`s what they decide to do, eventually the family will get used to it, but it will be hard for them in the beginning because that`s still seen as something that women should do. Either way, I`m sure they`ll work something out. Once they have children, they`ll have no choice but to do what is best for the little ones :)

I plan on being the sole source of income when i marry my GF so she can at least stay home with the kids until they r 11 or 12. That is wat I had growing up and I wouldn't have it any othere way. It's pathetic when having a big house full of empty space and gender roles come before your children's livelyhood!

She sounds like she`ll be okay with it. You know, she doesn`t really need to stay home until they`re 11-12 because they`ll be in school all day and she`ll have nothing to do but scratch her butt and wait (of course there`s cleaning and cooking but thats not exactly satisfying work for most women).

According to the CIA`s world fact book, the population of Poland is a 38.5 million (est. June 2007). So with those statistics, the divorce rate in Poland is about 2%. Thats nothing to worry about yet.

Divorce is a terribly sad thing, especially if there are children involved but there`s no need to get overly worried about divorce in Poland. Only a tiny minority of people get divorced in Poland. In my family, I can think of only one person that got a divorce - my uncle, and he did it when he was living in Canada for a number of years. The thing is, I `ve known some couples that should have gotten divorced because their relationship was so abusive (mentally, physically and or emotionally) and yet they stay together because they don't want to shame their families.

Exactly, child abuse cases are so delicate. The incidence is quite high in Scotland. I studied the Children's Reporter system in some detail and it was quite disturbing just how many kids were embroiled in domestic disputes and beatings. My friend is a social worker and he sees first hand just how heinous the punishment dished out is. The bruises and scars in more than one sense.

Child poverty is at an insanely high rate in Canada. I believe that it is one of the highest of any 1st and 2nd world nations. In the 1990s Canada was constantly picked as best nation to live in by UN for years until a female Canadian scholar did a study about child poverty and found that rates were abnormally high for a nation such as Canada.

Thats just child poverty, there are also some serious issues coming out regarding spousal abuse. There is an 8-10 year waiting list for women that have been abused to get adequate housing from the government. The initiative was made so that women in these relationships could get out and get help but the system has been severely backlogged and a lot of these women have nowhere to go.

Women`s issues are international and not just restricted to 2nd and 3rd world countries.

It depends. Spain Spanish are not known for being easy. Latin American Spanish are, at least in Toronto. Many of them already have kids as teens and think nothing of sleeping with a guy they hardly know. *at least that`s the stereotype*

Yes, women who have been raped deserve all the sympathy in the world, but that doesn't mean we should allow them to take an unborn child's life.

They should have the choice. And thank goodness that they do in most nations.

I agree with this. You`ll notice that its usually the men that are doing the raping and it is women that have to live with the results. Its easy for a male to be against abortion when he will never have to go through what a raped or beaten woman had gone through.

Also, if you look at statistics for single parents, they overwhelmingly show that it is women that are stuck alone with the child while the father is out partying somewhere. I`m in no way saying that this is grounds for abortion, but what I am saying is that it is all too easy for men to judge the women who have had abortions and call it murder, but when it comes down to real life situations, a lot of these men are nowhere to be found.

I think that abortion is a horrible thing and would never do it myself. That is my choice. Why the h*ck should I have to listen to a man, who will never go through what I will go through with pregnancy, tell me that I must have the baby?

I respect all the guys opinions here, but I truly don`t think that it is their place to decide what a woman should do with her body, especially in the case of rape or abuse.

Like I said before, rapists are sick f*cks who deserve the worst punishments in the world.

Yes they are, except that in a lot of cases, they manage to get away.
If a woman is raped and she has to carry the baby because a man she`s never met made a law that made abortion completely illegal, I would be sickened. I respect your opinion but I don`t think that taking a choice away from a woman that has been violated is right. Its one of the worst patriarchal situations I could think of.

There was a story in the news here a few weeks ago about a woman who was taking accutane for her acne for a few months before her pregnancy and in her first few weeks. The doctor told her that her best chances would be to abort the child because he would be born with serious defects or abnormalities because of the accutane. She decided to go through with her pregnancy and the child was born with serious defects. The child has mental as well as physical problems and will never function normally. Now she`s trying to sue the dr., even though he told her the risks. In this case, i believe that she should have had an abortion but she selfishly chose to keep the baby. This child will badly suffer for the rest of his life because his mother was a selfish b****. JMO.

But maybe, like the article speculates, polish women from poland are coming to the UK to have this done as it is legal and free in the UK (thanks to tax payers like NO IMMIGRATION :) )

Yes. Her choice is taken away from her when she is forced to have sex with someone. In all likelihood, the baby will not have a good life living with a person who looks at them as the child of a brutally violent man. Both will be miserable (although the woman will be miserable either way because he life will never be the same).

Whats even worse to me: I read an article about the Darfur situation in which some of the militia men were raping the women in order to get them pregnant and then beat them when they are several months pregnant so that they lose the baby. What is sad is that the raping of women has been used as a political tool by virtually every nation at some point in time.

I`m okay with abortion for women that have been raped or abused but it should not be a method of birth control. People need to be more responsible for themselves.

Sad article. It talks about the hardships poles go through in the UK and most shocking, 10k polish women in the UK get abortions. It's possible that they go the UK to have it done because it's illegal in poland.

Maybe they should have been more careful.

Debatable. Poland is religious in % of pop., but they are slowly managing to make the state as secular as possible. Bush is trying to do the opposite. If you guys get another Bush-type leader after the next elections, your constitution is in trouble.

Where I live in California people aren't that religious so I haven't been exposed to how religious america can be however I am fully aware of it.

I don`t mind debating as long as it doesn`t get nasty (I`m guilty there sometimes). Name-calling ends up repetitive and pointless and I get bored and move on.

Arguing and debating is wat i grew up around so whenever I am involved in some sort of argument I am about as happy as i get sober =). =D I think I like u now Mali! =) It's kind of annoying me now because my GF won't ever argue with me and just agrees with me on everything. =( I am so not used to this I grew up around strong women and I somtimes don't even know how to have a convo without debate.

Good debating skills are very useful for many professions because it means that you can stand up for something and argue a point. However, debating can turn into something completely pointless as the debaters get angry or annoyed and the topic of debate turns into something else entirely. Headache inducing.

I`ve noticed a lot of improvement in your debates, Rocky. At least now, you`re worth debating because it doesn`t turn into ***** ***** *****.
Your gf agrees with you outwardly, probably so you shut your pie hole :)

lol - if you hang around any wedding venue of a Saturday afternoon you'll see plenty of men in kilts (all ages), otherwise, I doubt you'll see many unless you visit some tourist attractions where guides etc may wear then as a "uniform" :D

Here`s the thing, Rocky: I never said that Poland was not a religious nation. My main point is that America is also a very religious country. It makes you look hypocritical arguing that Poland is corrupt because it is so religious when the nation that you live in is also very religious. So religious that your President (supposedly elected) declared war and used God as one of many excuses. Manifest Destiny is based on religion also, and this is what America is founded upon.

Poland is a religious nation, but as I`ve said, religious is cultural and personal rather than political (these days).

Anyway, southern Scotland was in Roman times inhabited by Brythonic speakers (Welsh) rather than Goidelic speakers (Scots, Irish). So Scotland's heritage is a mixture of Welsh, Irish, Pictish (whatever that means), Roman and Saxon... and Viking... and Norman... and Polish (ha ha!)

None of this surprises me because Polish and Slavic people have a long history with the Saxons, Vikings and Normans. Its also why this part of Europe Austria upwards is a lot `whiter` than other parts of Europe.

America isn't nearly as religious as poland. Yes america is religious but very diverse. Poland is not diverse! When more than one church is very large in a nation there is no controlling religion or denomination of a religion! Poland is run by the roman catholic church!

America is a CHRISTIAN nation. The leader of your nation even claimed that invading Iraq was permissible because God let him do it. One would think that the President of the 'most powerful nation in the world' is Louis XIV.

Rocky, you are extremely dense if you believe that Poland is `run` by the Catholic church. The pope has no power in the state whatsoever. For the people, religion is a personal issue, not a political one. America, on the other hand, is run by Bible thumping hicks and Zionists. That`s probably why America is such a religious nation that doesn't know what she`s preaching about.

America being one of the most religious countries is not a fact! It could be a fact that they r in the top 10 most relgious countries because they have a percent of the population that is one of the highest in the top 10. It's difficult to define religious too. There are several definitions of religious.

America is mostly a Judeo-Christian nation. Many Americans identify themselves as such. According to ARIS, in 2001 over 80% of Americans defined themselves as Christians. Sure that`s less than 90whatever% of Polish people identifying themselves as Catholic but at least we`re honest about it. You are in some serious denial Rocky, if you actually believe that America is a secular country and that defining the term `religious` is actually relative. Religion in America is pretty cut and dry rather than the diverse thing you think it is.

You`ll note that Poland was not in the top 10, although Russia was. There goes your theory that Poland is the most religious European country.

The study isn't alluding to anything other the FACT that the good Ole USofA is an overwhelmingly Christian nation. A Christian nation that is laden with poverty, obesity, illiteracy, racism, bigotry, homophobism and all that other crap you are worried about.

It has an extremely religious population not unlike countries of the middle east except every1 is extremest catholics not muslims. Gender roles are the norm and homophobia and bigotry is widely accepted.

Did you know that America is considered to be one of the most religious countries? Your constitution is being debated because people want it to be more secular.

Sure Polish people are religious, but you won't see a bunch of fanatics wearing a 'wwjd' bracelet and walk around handing out pamphlets in an attempt to 'spread the word'. The US still has universities and hospitals that are religious based. Your nation was built on Puritan beliefs, and you're saying that Poland is an extremist religious nation. Such ignorance and hypocrisy from an 'educated' individual makes me feel disappointed in your 'superior' school system.
