News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

I agree with Greg. It actually has more to do with the pricing strategy. As anybody who has studied marketing will know, there are numerous options. Poland has opted for the pricier options as destroyer pricing doesn't fit with the setup of the market.

It doesn't make Poland behind, just different.

News / Poland will take half a century to catch up with the West [240]

I caught the bus to Zabrze not long ago and it was ok. I catch the tram every week. Fine too.

My sincerest condolences concerning your friend. It'd be disingenuous for me to comment so I'll say nothing in reply.

The PO is pretty abysmal here. I'm still waiting on my package, posted over a month ago. My mum is furious. She went to a lot of effort to put it together. 10 quid alone on packaging.

I'm not too well up on mobile phone technology here. I've stuck by my trusty Nokia with the soft and big keys. I love rubbing them, nice texture.

I don't mind if a Polish person, or any other country's person, says sth bad about the UK. That's the whole idea, discussion.

Besides, I feel that many just label all 4 countries in the UK in the same way. That's a bit laughable but there we go.

A little bit of spice helps a discussion, provided that it is kept civil.

Language / Is is possible for me to learn basic Polish in just two weeks? [22]

Honky Polish, LOL. Pozwoli is ok, from pozwolić (to permit/let/allow)

Prędzej czy póżniej sorry. This means sooner or later in my interpretation.

Kryzys na rynkach finansowych prędzej czy póżniej musiał wpłynąć na gospodarkę, please translate this then, pgtx

I'd translate it broadly as 'the current financial crisis on the market had to, sooner or later, impact on the economy'.

History / Katyn executioners named, protected by Russian authorties [35]

And you think that Russia really cares? Siding with Venezuela and Iran, threatening the use of nukes. Come on Crow, you are a smart guy. Think about it. Besides, you are once again detracting from the loss of life. I get condemned for profane language, proportionality of punishment and all that.

20,000 lives, cheaply taken. Condemnation is barely even a slap on the wrist. So, we impose sanctions, wow, not gonna work.

Sorry, if condemnation is the maximum punishment for the taking of so many innocent lives, you lay down a dangerous precedent.

News / EU constitution: 'Strong show' for Irish No vote ? [126]

The Irish weren't doing it to snub Brussels. They were unhappy with some of the provisions so used their most sacrosanct of democratic rights, that which allows them to vote.

It encouraged more reflection. The Irish have done well for themselves and the milk offered by the EU was just too sour for their liking. But, like the Murphy's, I hope the EU isn't too bitter.

It may well have to do with the package, more than likely. Poland still ranks VERY high for broadband technology. Bush made a statement that America was 10th, ten places too low, lol. I think he meant 9 but nevermind.

If technology is a benchmark or yardstick, then Poland is not faring too badly.

Well, many say IT is the technology of tomorrow, brought to you today.

Poland is at the forefront of many current developments. In some parts of Britain, you have limited downloads. My folks, quite well off in Aberdeen, were surprised that I could watch as many Youtube videos as I wanted. When I was there in July, my viewing was rationed.

Health care, well, the jury is still out on that one.

Public transport isn't as bad as people make it out to be here.

Then it is no better than passing the buck. Look at the Eichmann case and Nuremberg. The culprits were brought to justice. If the culprits are now dead, all that remains to say is 'c'est la vie' and rue a missed opportunity to haul them under the coals.

Thinking in scale serves little purpose, such reductionist thinking flies in the face of the reality of killing. I've said it before, the heaviest penalties in law are reserved for murder, the taking of ONE other life. What about 20,000, Crow? Human life cannot be reduced to statistics and we cannot let ourselves think, oh well, millions were eliminated in the Holocaust, what's 20,000 more!? Serial killers take, what, 10-25 lives typically? We lock them away for good. They are psychologically ill also, insane in Scots Law anyway (total alienation of reason). As for those who carried out those summary executions, they may have suffered from diminished responsibility but I think otherwise.

My point is, we need to step in as an international community. Not sit like crusty old, bearded academics with woolly jumpers.

Work / Advice on WHEN to go to Poland to teach English [30]

Rumour has it that I wrote some of the chapters for it but, after some checking, I dismissed that. I wrote part of a new method but it's inane stuff. I'd much rather enter the world of ESP, no, not Extra Sensory Perception, but English for Specific Purposes. Or EAP, English for Academic Purposes.

Aha, herein lies the dilemma. If I were to follow your logic to its natural conclusion, Crow, I'd reach the point where they made it a Polish issue through the imposition of communism. Regardless of what labels are attached, it's a criminal issue.

To je kukavièluk (sorry, Wrocław)

Callan is ancient, that's why they drafted in Avalon to revitalise the market. Shame that it's just a rehashed version of the same old stuff.

The great majority of teaching here is about money.
