History / WW2: Britain Declares War on Germany to Save Poland [290]

The Molotov-Ribbentropp pact

Allright, allright, Soviets turned towards Germany, because they had been turned down by Great Britain and France before - Stalin recognized Red Army's utter weakness in '39 and wanted to gain some time to build it up after he purged it in '36. After Russians suggested some interest of diplomatic reapprochment, the Brits send some low-rank diplomats for the talks. Being given these signals, Soviets tried to approach Germans - with success. Hitler was afraid of war on two fronts, and securing Eastern flank after expected defeat of Poland fitted his business perfectly, for France was the next in the queue for conquer. Fuehrer was a cunning player and he expected Poland to attack Germany in case France was invaded first, and on the other hand he was anticipating that France nad GB wouldn't make any action against him. Although he was wrong - these countries declared war on him on the 3rd September - all that ensued was only 'phoney war', so he had the time to defeat Poland, replace losses with new 'war material' and resume war in '40.

Well, after numerous walks around streets of Glasgow on Saturday night (at any weather) some credit goes to Scots.

You're going to need a NIP-3, since you are a physical, non self-employed individual. Just google 'formularz NIP' and you should find it.

UK, Ireland / An Englishman's View on Polish flocking to the UK [53]

but they are often to be found in the cheapest boozers

...and some in libraries.

. EH,check your history mate.We were in Debt to the sceptics untill a couple of years ago,and were not eligable for the post war marshall plan...

All right, but did you have to send ships - almost for free - to the US ? Or coal (Before fall of the communism in Poland was mined about 350 M ton, after - only about 100 M ton, and if you were a private person it was almost IMPOSSIBLE to buy some coal for winter) ? Or was in trade with the US one pound worth one dollar (as it was in the case of so called transfer rouble, which was forcibly exchanged as 1:1 for dollar in trade between USSR and the rest of communist bloc) ? In the post-war history Poland was on the much worse side of the map than the UK.

And here's a list of countries that drive on the left....

Most of these countries are former British colonies, so it's small wonder some relics of British governing are still present there.

Life / How much do you HATE POLISH PEOPLE and POLAND [1260]

There was no aminosity in Poland at all.

That's the point. Poles working abroad are there often 'exiled' by poverty, many of them come from villages and small towns, where family ties are still strong. So they're not to happy leaving them. Working in some crappy jobs doesn't help at all.

This issue of integration is the crux of the hostility in many ways.

Many people are here not to settle down, but only for some limited period so as to earn as much as possible and then come back home. So they (unfortunately) often don't feel any need to 'integrate' (whatever it means), but are focused on their jobs (they often take overtime, they don't spend much money for entertainment and so on).

Wz. (Mark) 34, to be strict. Pity there isn't any original equipment (I'm talking about bigger one, such like planes or tanks) left in Poland from the September Campaign of '39(except for P. 11c in Muzeum Lotnictwa in Kraków).

I can't go anywhere, even if I wanted to. I'm working at A 814/Yorkhill Quay tomorrow. So any haters out there: you may hate me for a while longer, I don't mind if it makes you feel better.

UK, Ireland / any polish ppl in aberdeen who make there own music [5]

Well, I'm a Pole myself but I find these things strange. A shop owner not letting customers in ? Is he an idiot or moron if it's true ? People not answering ? Perhaps they're too scared to talk, for their language skills are inadequate. And I've seen barbershops with 'Turkish Style' signs, is it rude ?

UK, Ireland / What will the Polish give the UK? [58]

Sorry, I don't understand this. Where's this £6 billion coming from? Am I going to see any of it? :)

Sorry, I got OTT here. £6 bn in taxes comes from all the immigrants, not from Poles only.
