Superpower invades another country - kills millions - millions dispossessed, refugees - attempts to rewrite history.

Couldn't happen in this day and age could it ?

Law / Street performing (music) in Poland... permit needed? [14]

I was very impressed with the street performers in Poland - chamber quartets playing Mozart was not unusuall- much better that the usual pennny whistle and scabby dog you get here.

Travel / Polish climbers [6]

I have no doubt that life was hard but the statement reads that the Himalayas were readily accessable - how much do you think it costs to go climbing in the Himalayas ?

That was the point I was making.

Travel / Polish climbers [6]

In an early 1990s article, the Polish climber Voytek Kurtyka explained what he called "the Polish Syndrome."

"Despite poverty and limited freedom, climbers were overtaken by a tremendous inspiration to overcome all barriers. The Himalaya offered an exciting escape from the drab system and grey stability of home, and a rare opportunity for creative communication with the outside world."

Sorry Lukasz, maybe this is taken out of context but this reads like -

I am so poor, I might as well go and climb the Himalayas !

UK, Ireland / Ideas for integration between English and Poles [15]

I just feel that being english and taking it upon myself to get to know other cultures living in my society is better and more helpful than being simply indifferent to it.

Good man.

Honestly though, just go in to one of the shops and tell them you want to know more about Poland and their culture, in fact, maybe just go in to one of the shops, pick up a jar of something and ask what it is, how do you cook it etc See what happens.

UK, Ireland / Ideas for integration between English and Poles [15]

Just put a note in one of the shops windows advertising a grill ( BBQ ) with a few beers - irresistable to most Poles in the summer !

Go along to the centre and talk to someone and see what comes of it - I am sure they will be glad you are taking an interest in their culture.

People generally reciprocate kindness.

News / America: Take your missile base and shove it! [116]

Nice bait, but I'm not biting.

You brought it up in this thread.
Unfortunately, you cant pretend that a disproportionate amount of civilians died in this conflict that didn't need to.
Historical revisionism should not be tolerated by anyone.

Flattening of cities by bombing raids is something from the past,

On the 21st of March the US launched 1700 air sorties against the civilian population in the city of Baghdad (also used over 500 cruise missiles).
According to The Guardian correspondent Brian Whitaker in 2003, "To some in the Arab and Muslim countries, Shock and Awe is terrorism by another name; to others, a crime that compares unfavourably with September 11

Over 6000 Iraqi non combatants - the majority women and children - were killed in that attack.

estimates based on previous wars'

No, these are facts from the war going on as we speak.

pretty quiet there these days

Totals for June -
31 coalition troops killed -
142 US wounded
Over 300 Iraqi deaths

[all] our sides are turning out to be the winners.

Winners?????!
If you feel like a winner..............

UK, Ireland / Polish parents hang themselves at their Lincoln, UK home [66]

Seems to be a lot of pre concieved ideas about suicide.
This is a good link for those that genuinely want to try and understand suicide -
Most people contemplating suicide do not want to die, they just want to stop the pain and difficulties they are experiencing

News / America: Take your missile base and shove it! [116]

Armed Forces types are killed and kill in war. That's our lot. Civilians are completely different, on the other hand and at least WRT American forces, civilian deaths are avoided if at all possible in spite of what rumors you may have heard.

So what have you heard John ?
100 000, 500 000 or 1 000 000 Iraqi civilians killed ?

UK, Ireland / Free Flights at Ryanair?! (UK / Poland) [39]

Just been on the Ryanair website looking at flights to France.
I can get a return flight from GLA ( Pik ) to Marseille for "Free".

Taxes cost £88
Baggage fees cost £46
Max allowance 15kg a bag
Insurance etc extra if you want it.
Flights leave in the middle of the night.

Thats still cheap but after reading some horror stories I am going with another airline and paying £50 extra.
Apparently Ryanair are the worst for cancelling their flights and leaving passengers stranded.

I believe that suicide has been discussed before but would you know what to do if someone you know was suicidal or thinking about harming themselves?

Some of these links may help people get an idea of how to help -

metanoia.org/suicide/whattodo.htm

If you are interested in helping and you are resident in Scotland there is a Mental Health First Aid course available -

No its a serious question,

No its not you are just being a fanny again.

The suicide rate in Scotland for males between 91 and 2004 was 50% higher than the rest of the UK.

Give me examples of mass immigration of unskilled british tilet cleaners, street sweepers etc.

In the 80's at every tube station in London there was a Scottish guy begging for money.
Germany was full of Scots doing anything they could to get some cash.

Get an education idiot.

History / Operation Market Garden, what went wrong? [68]

Off topic but since we are talking about Airbourne things in the war..............

Off topic...my grandad can tell the difference between a Rollys Royce and a BMW from a distance of 25,000ft.

The Rolls ( Lancaster ) had a constant drone whereas the BMW ( Heinkel ) had a rhythmic drone.
If it was a constant drone, he knew he would be OK to stay sleeping on the bottom bunk in the shelter.
If it was a Heinkel, he would move on to the floor because my Aunty was guaranteed to pee herself when the bombs dropped.

First account history - you just can't beat it !

OK, so back to Oosterbeek..............

History / Operation Market Garden, what went wrong? [68]

Bit of background.

Through large-scale use of airborne forces, its tactical objectives were to secure a series of bridges over the main rivers of the German-occupied Netherlands to allow rapid advance by armored units.

The operation was initially successful with the capture of the Waal bridge at Nijmegen on September 20. But it was a failure overall since the planned Allied advance across the Rhine at Arnhem had to be abandoned.

Life / WIELORYB AND FEMINISM? [7]

I am no expert either but Feminism is about empowering women. The picture you portray was propagated in the 70's. Times have moved on a bit.

The whale is a cetacean.
