Genealogy / My grandpa was from Poland - Gresom Jopfa [44]

was a form of Gregory from Poland

No...

he was a solid atheist

So a chance that he was a Jew (Jew as ethnic group, If one's parents are Jews then the person is a Jew too, no matter If is religious or not) is really big as very few Poles born in those times were atheists.

News / Helena Wolinska dead [90]

I would say, since 1956 you were mostly on your own...

It depends what you mean. Yes, after 56 there wasn't a direct Soviet controll but obviously Poland had to be a "People's Republic", undemocratic, uncapitalistic etc. And once there's a dictatorship, there must be various crimes and when there's opportunity, there are always and everywhere many people willing to commit them. So obviously blaming foreigners for individual communistic crimes (except those in 44-56) in Poland would be stupid but the whole system existed only because It was imposed from outside and was kicked out at first opportunity.

What led to what? Perestroika to Solidarnosc or Solidarnosc to Perestroika?

No sure what you mean but Solidarity was one of many things contributing to the fall of Soviet Union (and so the communism) and Perestroika was a failed attempt to stop that process.

Work / Salary at IBM-Kraków [10]

I applied for a position (Junior Accountant-Hungarian speaker), I really don't know how much I can ask from IBM.

I think 4000PLN a month should be OK... but they may offer you less...

Work / Living on the certain income in Poland [30]

Like I said, the rent is generally expensive, especially in Warsaw, so even for a small flat you will need (more or less) ~1800 PLN a month but If you don't go out a lot, use public transport, usually cook at home etc. then that should be about half of total costs, so out of 13k gross (which is about 9k net) you should be able to save 5k a month.

News / Helena Wolinska dead [90]

Helena Wolinska finally died

Good. Too bad Gerries didn't put that s*it to the ovens.

Why wasn't she tried in England?

Because she was one of the chosen.

I wonder if there were other people who escaped like her.

Many. For example Shlomo Morel. Some other s*it like Bielski bros are made heroes now.

Work / Living on the certain income in Poland [30]

Can I save 3000-4000 PLN for a month with this salary ?

You can save much more than, everything depends what you mean by not having high life standards. Generally basic things (except rent) are not very expensive in Poland but If you want "middle class" standard then the difference in prices between Poland and western Europe isn't big and "luxury" goods and services are often more expensive here.

Work / How much Poles earn compared to foreigners! [29]

Sheep, have mercy for yourself. You are picking up selected products from other countries, where they are unusually expensive because of policy of governments over there, which shows how crappy your arguments are. Cost of living in Poland is lower than in western countries If you compare desperately trying to survive kind of people and their expenses. If you want to talk about middle class people and typical spendings in that group then the cost of living here is generally similar (some things are cheaper, many are more expensive) so spare us opinions of some Polish kids.

Work / How much Poles earn compared to foreigners! [29]

It depends if they are public or private doctors.

Not so much anymore and people in the health care often work in both public and private sector.

Japanese salaries are higher but their cost of living is MUCH higher than here.

Maybe 10 years ago, now there's no country in the world with really much higher cost of living than in Poland.

3000PLN in hand is not that good for doctors here.

Show me a doctor, who makes 3k... Generally doctors (I mean normal doctors, not people one year after the medical academy but not the top class specialists either) make here 6-10k a month, which compared to the average salary here is similar ratio as the salaries of doctors in the west.

And I'm surprised that anyone moved here from Japan to make 5k, is that at least Japanese minimal salary ?
