Language / sobie sobie sobie sobie sobie [29]

For me, it is close to tobie, just referring to oneself instead.

Myśle o tobie (I am thinking of you)

Myślisz tylko o sobie (you only think about yourself).

Language / TYPICAL MISTAKES OF POLISH LEARNERS OF ENGLISH? [23]

Adding 'a' where not necessary.

Like, it was a hard work rather than it was hard work. There are many examples of this scattered throughout the forum.

Yeah, Marek, that's right. On is frequently misused. On the airport, on the lesson, on the party etc etc. At the airport or in the airport building, in class is more common (or sitting in on the class) and at the party are the correct versions.

Law / Polish tradesmen: Be careful... some may cheat you.. [37]

Many 'wood' agree with you, WB. You should 'log-on' to their website and 'lodge' a complaint. You may find the 'root' of the problem. Just don't 'bark' too loudly ;) How's the hair-dryer working? You may be 'stumped' :)

Law / Polish tradesmen: Be careful... some may cheat you.. [37]

I always get my fiancee to do deals for me. It works out much better, she takes no shit. The Poles can be tough customers so better leave a Pole to deal with it. They know the rules of engagement and how it goes.

Law / Polish tradesmen: Be careful... some may cheat you.. [37]

My parents have experienced the same in Scotland. Hence the term fly-by-night tradesmen. Not only with windows but with tarring the brae (drive or driveway). They are sly dogs!

WB, I don't have much experience here as the tradesman here was a friend of my landlord's and damned efficient. Many Poles are very gifted with tools. Many Poles have a fair bit of savvy and practical know-how, that's been my experience anyway. However, I can see where some cheating might occur. I don't think the guy took you for a sucker, he was just chancing his mit more than likely. He just picked on the wrong foreigner to do it to, LOL.

Have you kept your receipts? Nevermind, it'll be drying out all the time :)

Food / Whats with the distaste of Polish food? [7]

Maybe I'm missing sth here but isn't flaki known as tripe to us? Flaki rock and flaki are awesome would suggest that flaki is plural. In English, tripe is tripe and not tripes.

Is this like pieniądze są but, in English, money is (not are)?

Anyone, I love Polish food. It's not the best in the world I've tasted but it's up there. Not much to beat it in winter :)

USA, Canada / FIRST POL-AM CATHOLIC (?) PRIESTESS [72]

I agree, I don't really see major differences in a real sense. In the words of a Cockney, 'wot's 'at abowwwt, then?'

Well, being agnostic or atheist is a fair position to adopt in the absence of irrefutable evidence to the contrary (i.e that God exists). Agnostic especially as being unsure seems to fit with the evidence. The question there is 'to what level are you unsure?'.

USA, Canada / FIRST POL-AM CATHOLIC (?) PRIESTESS [72]

I asked PF members for 10 Catholic beliefs that would separate it from Protestant ones. They couldn't do it. It tells a story really. Oh, it's about belief in God they said. Well, Protestants believe in God too, hence the term Christianity. How can we possibly enter into theological debates when the fundamentals seem to be so elusive?

Life / When in Poland, should I be British or Scottish? [104]

It is quite frustrating. Anglik is generally used to describe as Brit but it is lazy and provincial thinking. Jestem Szkotem, nie jestem Anglikiem. I am often asked, 'jesteś Brytyczikiem?'. I'm not sure if many Poles are too aware of the differences between our respective cultures.

One thing we can be more sure of is that America will likely make a movie out of this sort of thing.

According to my interpretation, as long as the Catholic is fully aware of the social and moral teachings of the Catholic Catechism, coupled with the Bible, then that is sufficient.

I will happily bow out soon tho. I'm not attempting to argue, just state what limited info I know on the subject. Or, at least, I think I know.

Learning over the course of the years, as a practising Catholic, familiarises them with its various teachings. I was also of the belief that the church was paramount but knowledge of the doctrines, wherever practised, are equally important.

After all, don't Catholics believe that the earth is but the transient medium to heaven and that society encompasses more than just the church, where we put the various Catholic maxims to the test? Workplace, family unit etc etc

I think you are right with regards to the different places that Catholics can pray and practise their faith, Pat19. It was written, in Deutoronomy I think, that the only day that Christians reserve exclusively for prayer to God in church is Sunday, the day of the Sabbath.

That makes two of us, LOL. I must've been bereft of inspiration or sense at that moment.

You mentioned that the Pope was manly enough to admit his mistake but the other guy couldn't do the same.

Regarding the first point, I was trying to say that some people hold rigid positions and are very defensive. I don't raise religion in class unless I really have to. It can put you in the line of fire. So, I echo your sentiments above :)

History / 70th Anniversary of start of WWII [50]

The idea of defence is nice at this time but we all know that it goes a little deeper than that and is a hot potato.
