UK, Ireland / Polish workers found hung in Herefordshire [51]

There were actually 3 deaths connected to the farm in this time period - 1 guy hung himself, 1 guy was stabbed and 1 guy was kicked to death in Birmingham

The police are saying very little at this stage and speculation is rife - the farm is largely run/controlled by Latvians and Lithuanians and there is talk of a mafia connection. A number of Eastern European British embassies are sending members of staff to investigate possible organised crime connections

As for the sauna, gym etc - the farm does have various bits and pieces like this and is apparently well equipped

Mafia connections ? They're picking strawberries !

How can things get so complicated ?! I guess it might be a "front" company for a whole load of other nasty stuff.

The things some people have to go through just to try and earn themselves a few extra quid.

I hope any wrongdoing is dealt with severely (fat chance with the British justice system I know, but we can but hope).

I agree that tornado2007 needs to appreciate that those who post on a Polish forum (be they Polish or not) are going to be interested in such stories.

I very much hope that the reasons why these guys did what they did is not connected to any bad experiences that happened to them here. However, having read one of the articles posted here where it states that:

"The work manual at S&A Produce's farms tells workers there will be a jacuzzi and sauna, a gym, and basketball and football area."

I have to say that anyone really thinking that this would be the case at a farm where the job is to pick strawberries, would have to be rather naive. I've worked for some pretty big UK based companies and have never had anything like that. A vending machine and somewhere to sit down to eat a sandwich is often as good as it gets.

As ShelleyS said, we may never know why these guys did what they did, but if it was in any way down to their work situation, I hope the company feel suitably ashamed.

what every single Polak that dies??? really?? do all Polish like to read about the deaths of the individuals??

I've no idea, but it must be of some interest to those who work here in the UK.

If you were working abroad, wouldn't you want to know stuff like this ?

not starting a topic everytime some random Polaks die. I know it sounds cold but its true, you don't get news flashes every day listing all the people who have died since the last time the 10 o'clock news was on do you??

Fair enough if there is some sort of accident where there are multiple deaths and i'm talking more than one or two, or a natural disaster like an avalanche, tsunami etc etc but this, not in my view

As this is a Polish forum, it's of interest to those who visit.

HAs everyone else been looking at a different article? I don't see where it says that they committed suicide except "police are not looking for anyone else in connection with these deaths..." which means nothing. It's only been a couple of days, so I can't see how homicide can be ruled out so fast.

If they were hung (which I also don't see) , how can you know they haven't been lynched or sth. Yeah, can be an extreme way to think, but who knows the truth?

"Two Poles have hanged themselves at a strawberry plantation in Hertfordshire, England.

One of the workers hanged himself around 5 AM, Tuesday, the other approximately four hours later.

A representative of the plantation's owner claims there is no connection between the two deaths. The local police are of the same opinion, but Polish strawberry pickers employed at the plantation think otherwise."

Ok no disrepect to the men who died and i'm sure its very very sad for their families and friends but really, everytime an immigrant dies, or in this case two, were going to have a topic so that we can write RIP. You must be joking, what makes these two so special, people die everyday all around the world. I'm sure more Polish nationals died today aswell as these two fruit pickers.

While i'm big on respect i do feel this is going a little to far

It's just a mark of respect. Yes, people die everyday, but these two deaths have been brought to the attention of the forum.

What would you suggest instead ?

UK, Ireland / 800K of Polish immigrants in UK don't pay taxes -what do the poles think [190]

Standards have dropped a lot over the last few years and as I don't work in education, I can't offer an explanation as to why that would be, however, the rot needs to stop before it sets in any further.

I work with people, many of whom are thick as planks and yet they're the ones who get the promotions and the extra cash.

For what it's worth, I think there have been too many trendy teaching methods, where there are no right or wrong answers, together with a general lack of discipline and authority. People also spend too much time reading cr*p like Heat magazine, worshipping celebrity footballers with their trashy wives and watching sh*te like Big Brother.

your an idiot szkotja2007, pure and simple. I am banning you from talking on my threads

Please ask your tutor to go through when to use "your" and when to use "you're".

You do yourself no favours by littering your posts with bad grammar and then expecting everyone to sit back and listen and to take you seriously.

Did you send that article to your MP like I suggested ?

I agree with some of the things that you say, but you make your points so badly and seem blinded by a huge dislike (maybe even hatred) of immigrants.

Yes, the system stinks, but directing your anger at people who are only trying to make their lives better, isn't on. You also take pleasure in posting things like that video where two Polish guys got beaten up. That's really below the belt stuff.

You need to work out why you're so angry and get that sorted, as I doubt that the Polish are the root cause of it.

I'm anti-immigration in it's current form, but I manage to air my views on here without getting the reaction that you do.

Sort your life out !

Noimmigration, all I can suggest you do is send the article to your MP and ask for their comments.

Even though it's in the Daily Star, nothing would surprise me about what immigrants (be they from Poland or anywhere else) do and don't get as the UK benefits system is so full of holes.

The Polish (and others) shouldn't get anything until they've paid tax and NI for five years and their main motivation for coming here shouldn't be for the easy ride on benefits.

There are also plenty of Brits I would kick out of the benefit system too. If people want kids then they should pay for them themselves and if people don't want to work for a living, then they can help the council repair the roads.

UK, Ireland / Intercultural experiences of Polish migrants who work and live in the UK [26]

In brief, Poles seem more in touch with their history than Americans or English people. Maybe I'm wrong.

What I don't get (as someone who is British) is why many Polish people, if the above is true, can't seem to escape their country quickly enough.

I can appreciate that many want to earn some quick cash over here and then go back, but those who come over here to live seem to do it pretty easily. They may go back to visit at Christmas and so on, but other than that they don't seem to miss home all that much.

Having said that, they tend to stick together rather than integrate, so maybe they feel more "at home" that way. It's as though they don't want to make Britain their home, they want to bring their home here.

I would have thought that it must be a rather frustrating situation at times for them living here. Although the money must be better, the types of jobs must be below what they are qualified to do - Immigrants from any culture must find there is a "glass ceiling" when they're in another country.

UK, Ireland / WHAT AREAS IN LONDON ARE POPULAR FOR POLISH PEOPLE TO LIVE IN? [33]

Without wishing to be a red rag to a bull, but is it black or white South Africans that seem to be the issue here or is there not much of a difference in the way that they behave ?

I do agree about the accent.

UK, Ireland / WHAT AREAS IN LONDON ARE POPULAR FOR POLISH PEOPLE TO LIVE IN? [33]

Ironic, as it is the recent influx of knife-wielding Saffas who have made the place unsafe. Give me the Poles any day.

My friend is definitely not one of those.

Back to SA hopefully!

She is planning to stay as she holds a British passport through her parents being British.

UK, Ireland / Poland V's UK - staying or leaving? [11]

I have pride in my homeland, and in different circumstances there is a good chance that I would eventually return home. However, in 3 weeks I'm getting married to a Scottish girl, and I just feel life is easier for her here, where she is happy and settled. I still see Poland as my homeland and and will probably always do so, but after almost 5 years here in Scotland, its certainly become like my (second) home.

Yes your circumstances are very different to many and congratulations on your impending marriage !

That's real integration :-)

Some do, some don't.

Which ones do ? The plumbers and brickies or the architects and doctors ?

Not much love in the room for Poland it seems.

It can't be that bad surely ?

For me, The UK will always be home and although there is quite a bit I don't like about the country and its people, the good outweighs the bad (although only just at times).

Working abroad for a period is one thing, but leaving these shores for good ? I can't see it.

Don't the Polish have any pride in their homeland ?

I've not noticed any difference.

I think it's all media hype to try and calm the British masses down.

He probably won't even be 40 years old by the time he is out. How is this justice ?

UK, Ireland / Getting married to a Polish Citizen in the UK [371]

Sorry, you want what exactly ?

You want to get married to a Polish girl to obtain citizenship of where ? Poland ?

Or you want to introduce a Polish friend of yours to someone who is British and wants UK citizenship ?

UK, Ireland / Enquiry Immigration tv report [13]

I can also see this point of view, which in part i agree with. I woudn't say the British employers dug the whole i would say the British government dug the hole by letting so many people in with uncontrolled immigration policies.

I agree.

As I've always said there is nothing wrong with controlled/managed immigration, but what we have at the moment is uncontrolled chaos.

Grahambarb may not be putting it in quite the most diplomatic way, but he does have a point.

UK, Ireland / Do many British carry knives? [60]

Well i carried a knife around with me on Sunday night.

Mmmmmmm, I would rather stay at home or move somewhere else.

The other incident in Oxford St involved a young man who was on bail for a gang rape (which incidentally included putting the victim in a bath of acid so that there was no DNA evidence)..

It doesn't surprise me that he was let out on bail, everyone seems to let off their crimes one way or another. Hard to feel sorry for him being dead now we know more about the sort of guy he was.

I agree that the "life" won't be the long, long time in jail it should be. The average age of criminals these days tends to mean that serving life sees someone back on the street before they're thirty.

If prisons are full, build more ! Take away the plasma screens, recording studios and gyms or whatever else they have to prevent in jails to prevent their "human rights" from being breached and fill them up until there is standing room only.

UK, Ireland / Poles leaving Dublin? [14]

I guess many Poles are leaving Great Britain because it isn't how they imagined it and their homeland is getting (thanks to UE funds) better and better every year. However, those who know language and have found a good job over there will probably stay

How did you imagine it to be ? (Serious question)

It seems the Polish are leaving Sussex too.

UK, Ireland / Magda Pniewska's "Last Breath" Heard Over Mobile [11]

The sister of a nursing care assistant has told a court how she heard her being shot in the head as they spoke on a mobile phone.

Magda Pniewska, 26, died in crossfire between two gunmen in New Cross, south London, in October 2007.

news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/7398421.stm

Stories like this are dreadful regardless of the nationality of the victim, but when it involves someone where the victim isn't a British national, I can't help wonder what their family, friends, fellow countrymen must make of this country as a result.

Moreover, what do they make of the justice system and the derisory punishments that often get handed out ?

You just know that when the lowlife that did this gets sentenced, it just isn't going to reflect the severity of the crime.
