Genealogy / Any person lives near Kurowo? [9]

You will have a better chance of finding them, if you give us a name and details.

Genealogy / Why would someone lie about their age? [26]

I ordered it as it had the same parents names.

It is possible that the child born in 1924 died in infancy. Then a second child was born in 1928 and given the same name.
The second child may or may not have been baptised in a different church.

This sort of thing comes up quite often in British genealogy.

Life / Facebook - is it popular in Poland? [22]

It seems everyone & their mom is on NK.

nasza klasa is really very popular.

nasza klasa is important when it comes to the age at which one can register. There is no age limit. On friendsreunited, for example, one must be eighteen.

I guess that once people upload so much data, photos etc, they are not going to be persuaded to change sites too easily.

Real Estate / Do It Yourself Renovations in Poland [2]

Some of the DIY stores like Castorama, have booklets etc.

Otherwise, a regular bookstore should have what you want.

And of course, there are plenty of builders posting on this site. Just pose a question and someone will answer it.

Genealogy / Why would someone lie about their age? [26]

There was a time in the UK when the age of adults was rounded up on the census.

The main reason for changing age would probably be for work purposes... possibly for marriage too. Although it was usually women who became forgetful in this area.

Real Estate / Construction methods in Poland [4]

The best person to answer your question is probably SeanBM. Please, wait till he comes on-line.

In the meantime: a block wall... insulation on the outside, provided by polystyrene (5cm)... then a coat of a coloured, cement based product.

I've never seen the method you describe, but it doesn't mean that it's not used.

Foundations are concrete.

Real Estate / Construction methods in Poland [4]

prestissimo,

Not everyone on the forum is a builder, but most know how a house is built.

Please, provide a link to the building method you use... and then we can compare and better advise.

Food / What First Polish Dish I Should Make? [30]

Bigos can be 'adjusted' to taste. Some other foods can't be.

The only problem with Golabki is getting the sauce right.

Love / Polish Girlfriend gone missing [154]

Is that true?

It's true in Wroclaw. The ratio of male to females is 100 to 113. When you realize that this a university city with up to 100,000 students... then the women meet a shortfall in men.

(The figure was given to me. I've never seen it written down.)

Work / opportunities for architects in Wroclaw? [6]

what are the possibilities for architects in poland? would i have any chance of finding work in a city such as Wroclaw?

I know nothing about the profession.

But: The university here has various departments of architecture.

The phone book will probably list quite a few companies.

I would think that a portfolio/photos of completed projects would work wonders, alongside your CV.

Life / HATPINS & KEY-RINGS V MUGGERS? [12]

rather than a hatpin. Try an H4 pencil. You won't get arrested for carrying it, won't kill anyone with it. But I think you'll send a good message if you have to use it.

There are plenty of safer, legal options: blind your attacker with camera flash, if your mobile has it.
spray some deoderant in the eyes, if you have to.

Life / Polish militaria stores/markets? [11]

Does anybody know any Polish militaria stores/markets in Poland?

I can't tell you about stores... I don't know any. For markets, I think you need to find out where the sunday markets are in the places you are visiting.

Life / Where to buy household furniture Lodz [19]

Ikea doesn't make good furniture ... check it yourself...

I doubt that you'll find many manufacturers of low-cost furniture who build a long lasting product.

Ikea make furniture that can be affordably replaced at a future date. They don't want customers to visit the store once in a lifetime.

In my opinion Ikea furniture is probably built to withstand 5-10yrs fair-wear-and-tear.

UK, Ireland / No Irish Need Apply - Polish Builders get their own back [42]

'No Irish need apply' - the signs are already going up on building sites abroad in the throwback to the grim days of the last century.

I've never seen a sign at or near a building site in Poland that offers work.

The only sign I've seen, which is always yellow, shows: main investor, emergency numbers etc.

I have to agree with Grzegorz_ too.

Travel / Accommodation in Wroclaw [27]

You should be able to buy a ticket the same day. It's school trips that cause problems, and there is no school in July.

The last time I was there: tickets were bought and there was a half hour wait.

Wroclaw should be busy in July, especially Rynek. It's the number of people and bars, which add to Rynek's atmosphere in summer.

You should find that most hotels in the city area are within easy reach of most attractions. Also, the Panorama is about a ten minute walk from the centre.

Life / Bisons of Poland - your thoughts? [90]

You bet, I have to find out if there is ranger or some person to show me where and when I can see the Bison first.

I know that up north they have wildlife tours, which include bison. There might be something similar in your area.

It's worth checking.

Work / Looking for a Finance job in Poland [11]

I would not employ you as you do not seem to have any commitment at all to a company so would not waste my time and that would be in the UK never mind someone from a different country.

I made a very similar post to this on another thread. Poles simply don't understand it. And I truely believe that a lot of them are going to be left out in the cold at some point in the future.

Life / Bad opinion about Polish people - rumour or the truth? [90]

To be honest the Triangle in Wroclaw goes more on past reputation these days.

I think a lot of problems are caused by town planning and new developments in old, run down, urban areas. The mix becomes: those who have and those who have not. This seems to lead to more crime in my opinion.
