Travel / Driving from Faro, Portugal to Krakow, any advice? [21]

then Monaco

I drove round the corniche d'or last week - fantastic scenery. Traffic is a bit hectic in Cannes and worth getting back on the motorway to avoid.

If you are going to Monaco best to go later in the evening when traffic quietens down a bit.

Life / Religions in Poland. [64]

It always makes me wonder why people feel the need to try and convince others their religion is best.
I can understand that they want to save our souls, spread the word and let us share in their happiness but.....to me, religion and spirituality are very personal and individual set of beliefs.

For some, its as if they are trying too hard to be holy - makes me wonder why.

UK, Ireland / Nominations wanted for the Young Scottish Minority Ethnic Awards 2008 [40]

The long awaited awards ( yawn ) happened on Friday night -

A Pole was nominated because she set up a Polish association.

I am nominating Bartoleme next year.

No ethnic indigenous Gaelic speaking Scots were nominated - ho hum, maybe not ethnic enough.

News / Abkhazia and South Ossetia are independent states now! Poland reaction? [236]

Todays news - Venezuaela and Russia to hold joint naval exercises -

Basically, the US didn't like who the Venezualans had democratically elected so they started an embargo. This embargo made it difficult for the Venezuaelans to get parts for their US made military hardware.

No probs, they do a billion dollar deal with Russia for new stuff and give thier old F-16s to Iran.

Another example of US foreign policy making things worse for themselves.

Relevance to this thread ? - The US import 13% of their oil from Venezuala and get 200 000 barrels a day from Russia.
Thats why when Russia invade Georgia the US don't have any influence.

News / Apology to Russians for Osetia and American missile base [78]

Sheep worth more than humans....

In another case, an Iraqi civilian said US forces opened fire with more than 100 rounds on his sleeping family, killing his mother, father and brother. Such was the firepower that 32 of the family's sheep were also killed. The army acknowledged responsibility and made two payments: a compensation payment of $11,200 and a $2,500 condolence payment.

UK, Ireland / Survey on life in the UK, Sweden and Ireland [35]

just trying to think this thru

Me too - just thinking aloud.

I don't think there are that many really (sadly).

Me neither, as most folk on the forum know, I am keen for Scotland to be independent. I thought I might shoot myself in the foot with this question but it seems across the UK there is less of a "British" feeling.

Shared commonalities - There are strong military traditions due to the Scots regiments, some shared Annual Holidays (but you get that in the EU ) and a love of curries.

Differences - In order to list the differences in culture across the UK I could write a small essay.

I would be interested in Magzy's opinion on this and how it will be reflected in her dissertation

What traditions would be common in UK and not in EU ?
I would say that morals, ethics and values differ greatly across the UK.

Maybe I am being a bit parochial but it is worth looking into.

Too many Brits seem to want

England footie shirts

Not many visible round here.

standing on the left going up an escalator,

Maybe in London but....

Point I am making is that there does not seem to be any common "British" culture.

Travel / CentralWings - are there any positive views? [10]

Booked flight to Gdansk 3 months in advance, got reservation number. Phoned to confirm 3 days before flight - no seat.
"But I have a reservation number" - "Yes, but you have no seat" !!!!!

Could happen with any cheap airline I suppose - if you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Interesting documentary on eastern european immigration impact on british jobs

Thats right noimagination - jobs are what other people have.
Not everyone sponges off their parents or the state like you do.

Life / Is Ritalin available in Poland? [22]

Maferz - Why do you want Ritalin ? Frequently unecessary and causes more problems than it helps.

Travel / Camping in Poland - are there any laws? [47]

I would say take the train and its easily do-able, they are quite cheap. I have heard that hitching is better in Poland than other Eu countries too.

I would only go to Warsawa if you have to, just because its a big city and will be more expensive.
If you are travelling by yourself you are bound to meet people on your travels ( best bit about travelling by yourself ). If you can learn a few words in Polish they will go a long way.

London to Gdansk for £37.77

Are you in London ?
If not have a look at Centralwings who fly out of E'burgh or Wizz Air and Ryanair who fly out of Pestwick. They should have prices to match.

Travel / Camping in Poland - are there any laws? [47]

I think it cost me arond £25 but prices (exchange rate ) has gone up a bit since then. I enjoyed the train journey - great way of meeting people and seeing the country.

Dont think you would get a train all the way to Hel. Stay over at least one night in Sopot, they have a campsite there too.
