Feedback / CLOSING THE TRANSLATION THREADS [55]

Translations are not perfect here and don't have to be, as long as they provide the right meaning to the person who asks.
If I received a note or a text message in Spanish and would get a rough translation on spanish website, I'd be very happy. I'm sure many people who ask, feel just that. Hopefully, nobody expect a perfect, scientific translation and certainly don't care about the arguments that follow...

A simple thank you for any translation is always the best.

UK, Ireland / Poles and Britis - why we should hate each other? [38]

apocalipto, I think you read only trollish threads before signing up and just reacted...
Is your staying in UK really that bad? Did you just have all unpleasant, personal experiences with every Brit in the last few months? Why are you there then?

Polish and English people do come from different backgrounds, different cultures, but that's no reason to dislike each other. Learning about and acceptance of other people is very rewarding. You should try it sometimes.

News / Should Polish citizens living abroad have the right to vote in elections [69]

I feel they should still be allowed to have a say in how the country is run

...but isn't their idea of Poland somewhat skewed by not living there everyday? I let my family cast the votes...even the last time in the fall showed it, when majority in Poland voted for Tusk, but Chicago did not.

Life / Daylight Savings Time in Poland [15]

They did not change the time in Poland yet. I talked to my brother yesterday. It was only six hours difference and it is always seven.

Darn time change anyway, it does not "save" anything, but I love the longer daylight!

Travel / Cheap tickets to Poland (Toronto-Warsaw or Bufallo-Warsaw)? [5]

I bought my round trip ticket on expedia after checking numerous websites and airline websites directly. They seem to have the best price. Then, one week later I learned about a website called kayak.com. It turns out - I paid $460.00 more on expedia!!!

I called expedia and complained, but they offered me only a hundred dollar coupon for a hotel. I told'em to stick it and I'll never order from them again.

Check kayak.com

Life / What people from Poland know about South America? [15]

My cousin and her husband from Poland just spent 3 weeks in Peru and Brazil. They just packed their back packs, got plain tickets and off they went. No plans, no arranged tours, all on their own.

I got a couple of emails from them. They were doing great and loved both countries. Yes, they came across lots of poverty, but they were also impressed with both.

I will watch their videos, see the pictures they took and hear about their adventures when I visit Poland in May.

Language / 'Na pole' or 'na dwor' ? [32]

We said "na dwor" in Kieleckie. It always sounds funny to me when I hear "na pole" :)

Life / You know you're Polish when... ? [111]

I've never been asked if I were Russian...but somehow I was asked many times if I was Austrian or German. I could never figure out the Austrian thing...

My friend is mistaken for Russian or Ukrainian often, however.

Love / why is the older women such a problem for polish guys [37]

Unfortunately, even a year or two older woman in Poland is..well... older. Somehow, polish men prefer younger women. It's almost like a personal quest.

I don't know of any polish couples where the wife or a girlfriend is older. Pretty sad, but pretty standard.
I know of American older/younger couples. I would not say it is common, but it is accepted and just fine.

I think, it's just 'biological" across cultures. Men prefer younger women.
If he is 30, he prefers 22. If he is 67, he still prefers 22. :)

Life / SIM cards in Poland [21]

I use T-Mobile and would like to take my cell with me to Poland. It has SIM and I believe T-Mobile works in Poland (GSM network?). I'm gonna call them and inquire about it, but an answer from a person who actually used it would be greatly appreciated...

UK, Ireland / Catholic church experience for Poles in England [22]

what do you go to mass for?

to pray for lost souls in this world and to check out the men. I like the 2nd part better.
(btw, I'm not really religious) :)

Love / "Let's leave beautiful women for men with poor sexual imagination" [150]

I think tusia does not like the idea of competing with polish women. Maybe her boyfriend left her for some "mousy" polish girl, but with a wonderful personality...

some men look for beauty and fun, some for marriage material. Some find both in a polish woman.

Life / Anna Name day in Poland? [13]

Names are listed in polish calendars. Most of the time it is the first time the name appears after the birthday. You're right PD.

A lot of people however pick the dates which are the most popular i.e Anna. It is very popular on July 26, but not August 7. The popular dates are the ones when the patron saint is commemorated in Poland.

For the rest of us who's name is not connected with a name of some saint the 'after birthday rule' applies.
