Language / Most commonly used letters in Polish [37]

Though probably not.

What NO CARROTS?

Even more shocking (although probably easier) would be trying to write without using the much-loved letter 'z'.

History / WW2: Britain Declares War on Germany to Save Poland [290]

Declaring a war to save Poland as you put it is not an honest representation of the events that have transpired at that time. Many arguments represented here are valid but they just defend the position taken by British government at that time. The simple truth is that for the Germany, (Poland as the weakest country in Europe at that time, in existence for only twenty years with outdated army and already weaken by military conflict between Soviet Russia and Poland) was just a proving ground for the capability of their army, tactics and testing of political waters sort of speak. All the powers of Europe at that time were reluctant to be involved in any major war including the Germany itself.

Emboldened by the weak politics of the western powers (read Czechoslovakia) the next logical step for the expansion was Poland. Not sure what the reaction would be on the part of the western powers they have obtained security in the east by signing Ribbentrop –Molotov pact. The decisive factor in all of this mass was on 12th of September 1939 in Abbeville, a conference in which France and the United Kingdom decided not to help Poland in its fight against Germany. (This is what we mean by saying that Poland was betrayed by France and United Kingdom). This is what have convinced Stalin to move on Poland a week later, not the “Ribbentrop –Molotov pact” and showed the Germany that west is weak and divided. Only a strong political pressure combined with some sort of military action could have changed the course of history as we know it.

Be it as it may, Germany drew a correct assessment of the political situation and the state of western powers (hence the war in the west) and the rest is history.

Life / Cigarette Smoking in Poland [146]

Hmmm? Perhaps you should add a little weed to your 40 fags??

That’s one thing I will never do. All I need is another habit, cigarettes are enough for me. Perhaps you have not noticed but this has nothing to do with respect for others. Plain and simple, this is about lecturing and showing others how PC one is. When we have a social at a friends house I always step outside for a cigarette even if it’s -20 outside. (That’s respect for the host, besides it gives me a perfect excuse to leave the conversation when it’s too boring). I’m sure that when you have a party at your house people respect you and step outside for a cigarette. When I join a friendly poker game and everyone smokes cigars, I do not lecture them (although I hate it, ironic being a smoker myself). That’s because it’s expected, at least within my circle of friends and it’s my choice whether I join the game. Having some manners, enough common sense and knowing how to apply it to the situation ones is in, is one thing but talking about it just because it seems to be trendy these days is another. This is the hypocrisy. Don’t you realize that people are well aware of the health hazard they face by smoking? Constant nagging on the part of the opponents just shows the bad manners on their part. Most of the times they just talk about the issue just so they are perceived as cool by their friends without being honest with themselves.

Life / Cigarette Smoking in Poland [146]

So you have a soft spot for red wine, its ok with me. I myself have a soft spot for beer. Hypocrites like that always complain about something. What's pissing me off is that people play on sympathy these days. (I have asthma, I have allergies etc) seems like it’s very fashionable. Well if he’s so sick he probably takes a lot of medications for his condition so he should not drink at all period. He wants to kill himself combining the two, that’s his business and he should stay out of my. He should avoid a place of temptation, so I guess that rules out the local pub, problem solved. Point is everyone has a soft spot of some sorts. (But I do it in moderation), well 2 packs a day is moderation for me so bugger off. Change is coming, it sure is because p****s like you let it.

OK So I lost my temper

Life / Cigarette Smoking in Poland [146]

You can't even go to club/pub in Poland because all of them are full of smoke...

Then don't go. I'm sick and tired of people telling me what to do. If you don't smoke it's your choice and you should definitely stay away. Smoking is bad but drinking is good, you f***ing hypocrite.

I know of the word's daily usage in that meaning in Maloposka and South East.

I’m from South East (Podkarpackie) and it’s news to me, I never heard of this before. However this word has been used as bimbo.

History / Polish Volunteers in the Spanish Civil War [140]

There are still 25 veterans of Spanish civil war living In Poland. About a year ago there was a proposal by PiS to take away their privileges and reduce their pensions to minimum. At the same time Spanish parliament has passed a resolution to protect those veterans by giving them a legal help and advice to keep their status as veterans. I never fallowed up on the story so I have no idea on whatever happened.

Life / Animosity between Poland vrs. Polonia? [98]

This country is changing very much every 5 years at least, so people who left more than few years ago usually don't really understand what's going on here.

The people I know that do participate in Polish election travel to Poland every couple of years.

Most aren't but also most have been living in America since many years. There are very few "recent arrivals to U.S".

By recent I mean people born in Poland, not second or third generation with an image of 19th century Poland. So to dismiss them as people with no connection to Poland and its politics is false. After all it’s what they have fought for when they were 20 or so.

Life / Animosity between Poland vrs. Polonia? [98]

You feel Polish come back here and vote becuase if you vote wrong you will feel consequences ...

If we lisned American Poles we would be there (In american Poles brains we are there) :

The picture that you have posted that American Poles have about Poland is your view. Have another look at it and see how narrow minded you are. Do you honestly think that people in U.S who participate in Polish elections are second or even third generation Poles? Well you’re wrong; the people who do participate in the elections are the recent arrivals to U.S with a strong connection to their homeland. Most of them have close families back in Poland and visit Poland regularly. They know Poland as it is now. While you may disagree with their point of view and feel threatened by their pro U.S. approach to politics, you have the right to vote and counterbalance that threat. After all it’s their generation that gave you that privilege, and sacrificed more than you ever will or can even imagine, so you can enjoy that privilege. Polonia in the U.S is just a microcosm of Poland itself, with all kinds of opinions. You would see that if you only traveled a bit and perhaps talk to people. Their vote reflects the struggle they themselves have undertaken many years ago. What’s your excuse? If you feel differently go and vote and stop b******* how the Polonia f*** it up for you.

History / THE POLES ON THE FRONT LINES OF WWII [92]

There is no sense to participate in any kind of debate if it simply disappears.
Like I said before that was a list of volunteers in German army. The rest were conscripts and there was about 40,000 altogether including the volunteers.

My reply also disappeared.

At the bottom of the page there’s a link to “Szczegółowy przebieg budowy wędzarni MirkaB...” just click on it and you will see his entire project in pictures. That should give you an idea or two on how to make your own.

Has the collection of poems 'Chamber Music' be translated?

Maciej Słomczyński had translated that in 70's "Muzyka Kameralna"
I believe that Grzegorz Turnau had written the music for some of them.

History / Ancient Polish History thread [180]

Lithuania at that time was not Christian. He became a Grand Duke of Lithuania in 1377, but the transition was not smooth. There were others who claimed the title, mainly his brothers. But the biggest fight he faced was with his uncle Kiejstutem and his sons.

In 1381 he was deposed for a short while by his uncle but regain the control and imprisoned him and his son Witold. His uncle died shortly after that but his main rival Witold escaped to the territory held by Teutonic Knights still claiming the title.

Facing the danger of being deposed by Witold with the help of Teutonic Knights, the only recourse was some kind of a union with Poland. In 1385 that union was signed. It was stipulated that He the Grand Duke of Lithuania will marry a Polish queen Jadwiga (who was a Queen of Poland since 1384). In exchange Lithuania will become catholic and will be united with Poland, but Jagiełło will regain the lands that he have lost to the Crown (Pomorze held by Teutonic Knights). In 1386 there was a baptismal, his wedding to Jadwiga and coronation of Władysław Jagiełło as King of Poland.

In one single stroke he has consolidated his power, eliminated his rivals and became stronger than ever. In 1387 the Christianization of Lithuania has begin according to the agreement (his brother Skirgielle was supervising this process) and in 1392 it was Witold.

As a ruler of a pagan state he was in a constant danger of losing his domain to the Christian Kingdom and He knew it. At the end it’s just Politics as usual.
