Life / Tv/Radio service fee in Poland ("abonament") [12]

Wroclaw,
I'm doing it your way sometimes but still I'd rather type my thoughts on instead bothering to check the spelling plus the spelchecker, in my case discovers for me the mistakes I'd be totally unaware of. ... i know it'd be difficult to upgrade. :)

Life / Tv/Radio service fee in Poland ("abonament") [12]

If you refuse????
Nobody is asking you to pay it. I think every post office has the account number and that is where most people are paying. If you pay for one year once then you may get some forms next year asking you for payments - that is if you STILL have a radio or television set in your household.

There are no controlers running housholds checking whether you have a TV but if there were any you'd NOT have to let them in.

The law is archaic really since nowadays everybody has a TV or radio and now too many people avoid paying by simply claiming that they do not own nor TVset nor radio set.

There were proposals to add the fee to cable bill but you can imagin what cable companies thought about such idea.
So now we are in situation that not many people pay the fee.
Public radio and television is unlike in USA very reach and compete succesfully with non public broadcasters thus many argue that they start paying for public television if they stop playing crap like Brasilinan soap operas and call it "public television"

So far the postal service is tcheoreticly responsible for contrloling whether you have or have not TV set at home and if you have paid the fee. Postal Service is taking their fee from each check they transfer to public broadcasters and they remain the most popular office to where one can pay. Of course Postal Service have no means nor much bussiness to contrlol people's housholds and not many would let the postman into their home for this kind of inspection.

:)
to admin:
I know I'm making some gramatical and spelling errors but still ...couldn't we have a spell checker in here? I'm too lazy -sorry- to copy text into outside aplication to correct my spelling.

At least some get to read some authentic international enlish, right? haha

The fee you are talking about is the fee for public television and radio. Money goes for programs only and public radio heavily depends on it as they have not that big revenues from advertisements. Many people simply avoid paying this form of tax since you are supposed to transfer money on spcecified public radio and television account. If you don't nobody is going to enforce it. Public radio has some ads promoting this tax and its need and they play some type of ads that would make you feel guilty for not paying or so they'd wish.

News / What makes Poland different from other countries [55]

I agree that custome service is generally bad in Poland. I'm having it almost daily and everywhere, from grocery store to phone manners presented by people who are suppesed to help. In case of restaurants though the stuff sometimes is reluctant to show you the bill first and they wait for you to ask for it. As if they wouldn't like to sugest that you must leave.

Still in many places waiting stuff is plain bad and goes on in some type of ritual full of manierism or something. Well, I heard from an American visitor to Poland that is is very fine to be served be real people instead of trained customer service reps with fake smiles and being after your money.

Language / Television to learn Polish/English. What should I be watching? [33]

I watch TVN24 a lot. Monika Olejnik show and Szkło kontaktowe. Also BBC, CNN and Deutche Welle (to learn German) and TV3Monde for pretty, well dressed French female anouncers and the sound of French. I watch some sports channels, too. Soccer and sometimes speedway.

News / Polish Workers Abroad on BBC World [5]

Wroclaw bussines culture is rapidly developing ...some say...and they want to lure back people from abroad. Wroclaw city officials had even made some campaining in UK! I'm not sure how such propaganda could have any real results. The bottom line is hardly disputed. Young IT genius chooses UK over Poland because his wallet gets thicker there. It could be some type of regular bull made by Wroclaw mayor in times of forthcoming elections ( in october - I think)

Hey Wroclaw,
It's not the first time I'm posting my reply only to see yours is in front of mine already! LOL

I've seen it. ...
Well, some nice shots of Wrocław rynek!
As for commentary...they could mention Poland has opened its market for Ukrainians, Turkish, Russians to fill up the shortages on job market
BUT:
We are here for full enjoyment NOT full employment, right?:)

History / POLAND BEFORE 966 [27]

I have used "pagan" to describe someone of non-christian faith and I meant those living in pre christian Poland area. I didn't think of modern pagans but there are some.

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

Shelley
Bussiness owners or corporations are profiting as well.
One would like to believe that indirectly, through taxes some money goes back to British in forms of public services, economic growth etc ... it is as easy to imagine that it goes to finance wars too. The hired workers are beneficiary, too but they'd rather spend their money back home.

History / POLAND BEFORE 966 [27]

Catholic church propaganda used to consider not christianed people wild, unhuman etc. The term "pogan" itself is not nice when spoken by catholics. Poland area in pre christianed times was to be laughed at rather then admire or researched. It all has its consequences in popular knowledge about hisotry.

The other important factor was our luck of independence (rozbiory!) in times of birth of modern history. First modern historians aside from being christian, for political reasons idolized polish state and disregarded pogans and their "organizations"

Comunists wanted to play on anty religion note but were also interested in rather strong "state" institiusion.
Lastly, first written records are dated from christian times and we simply have to rely on non written record to know something about Pogans

UK, Ireland / English people attitude towards Poles? [761]

PAZE,
I think you have a valid point here. Your profesion has been loosing on the whole deal of migrant workers. I'm polish staying in Poland and from the front line here I can tell you that large segment of job market for Enlish teaching has been taken over by "native speakers" from UK mostly. Prices for real estate in Poland are inflated in major cities by rich buyers from outside of PL - you can imagine that what for locals here is unafordable remains often a bargain for someone acumulating savings elswhere.

Life / Living in Poland without working? - Your opinion [63]

2 K is a fair amount in Poland. You should be doing fine.
Mind though please that if you are to eat outside and have, say 2-3 meals a day in some good and very good reastaurants you would be easily spending 30-50 PLZ a person (with drinks) per meal. If you are thinking about covering the bill for your table company you might get out of cash quite soon.

2000/ a month gives you something less then 70 PLZ for each day to spend.

UK, Ireland / TELL US WHAT YOU LIKE/DISLIKE IN UK [51]

I always feel good when in UK. The only problem I have is the one with hot and cold water running from separate plumbing pipes and not mixing....weird! Food is OK and I think London is spectacular in general. I love the tube, buses and polite drivers. I would stick to polish beer though and I don't like when Enlish are getting... patriotic.

I used to do the same thing - I mean feed my girlfriend - I thought I was doing some good to her. The bites ...bits??... I was preparing for her were usually the best ones I could figure and I would say while feeding her "my snoopy, snoopy" . Gasp!
