News / Polish Election Poll (according to PolishForums) [237]

One thing I was a little negatively surprised. The debate was too short! In the US elections the candidates would debate 2-3 hours at one time, not an hour or so...

News / Polish Election Poll (according to PolishForums) [237]

I don't know if such debates truly reflect the value of the future Polish leaders. It's more a show than a real value for the voters - whoever is more witty or likeable can be as a winner. I was listening to todays debate between Kaczynski and Tusk and most of the times I hears slogans. How is Tusk going to build another England or Ireland out of Poland? How is Kaczynski going to win against corrupting officials, and if that would be really what matters?

The important thing is whom PIS or PO is going to work with in the Sejm. With the former communists or not? With Lepper-like politicians or not? I think it will be a very close election and whoever wins will have to compromise and work with those they have very different opinions. Tusk seems too liberal to me and I think he is not as hard in negotiations as Kaczynski can be. It's important when dealing with EU or other countries.

USA, Canada / I need information on tax when shipping lawn tractor to poland fron NY [5]

Go to Polamer or Doma shipping office and they would put their own cartons on your original package, put it on a ship and it's free to go. I don't think they check it (used stuff can have new packaging too after all). I'm not sure about tax as I never had to pay that.. If anything, you can call them to find out about the tax - they should tell you over the phone - polamercargo.com/_webpc/kontakt.aspx

USA, Canada / I need information on tax when shipping lawn tractor to poland fron NY [5]

What many Poles do is this: they would declare the tractor is used (not new) and its value is... $35. Then you don't have to pay any tax at all. It worked for me many times when I was sending a computer or... a small lawn mower to Poland. This is a heavy stuff so I'm not sure it woud work though, but you can try :).

UK, Ireland / Why Polish is the New Language of British Retail [8]

It's simple - no matter what the public says, Poles will always account for a big market (both buyers and investors) and businesses like that as they can sell their products and services to Polish people.

News / Poland threatens to reject EU treaty [72]

"We are not happy with the current text, because elements we wanted are not in there," said a senior Polish diplomat, requesting anonymity. "We are not yet ready to approve this treaty in its current form."

iht.com/articles/2007/10/05/news/europe.php

I like the fact Polish diplomats start to realize hard negotiations are the key in dealing with the EU and other countries.

Food / refusing polish food politely... [7]

Well, some Poles (female cooks especially) may be a little sensitive about your refusing to even try what they have prepared (it takes time and effort to cook a good meal after all).

But if you directly state that you are a vegetarian, they will understand. Vegetarianism is quite popular in Poland.

News / Roman Giertych.... a right-wing politician from Poland [90]

I'm for tradicional and conservative values but Roman supporting for example total ban on abortion (even in case of rape)

This is a more complex issue and in this case I would support him too. But that's another topic to discuss.

News / Roman Giertych.... a right-wing politician from Poland [90]

I don't understand some people (especially who claim to be Polish) here. Roman Giertych may have very traditional and conservative values, but that's not the reason why some people try to mock him. The Polish nation likes to mock other people, especially if they are a little different from the crowd. I don't understand that.

I'm sure nowadays Poles would also mock such people like Pilsudski or Sikorski because they don't fit the current "modern life" or stereotypes about a modern life or "freedom." I think soon Poles will miss such political figures when they get tired of populists.

Real Estate / accommodation in Warsaw, big problems? [3]

I don't think you should expect big problems with finding an apartment for rent in Warsaw. It depends on the location - expect to pay a lot of money if you want something near the center. Generally hostels are quite affortable (even though students jack up the prices a bit).

There is nothing to buy in the shops

Well, now I see you are writing from the 1980-ties point of view. Your comments are true if we talked about the history of Poland (20-30 years ago). Now it has changed for better. You need to go to Poland and see for yourself.

Study / Medical Student Studying in Wroclaw [5]

I think overall the level of studies are the same in Poland and Russia. Hostel accomodation - shouldn't be a problem, but be ready to pay a good amount if you want good condition and near the center. Brand clothes or shoes - plenty of stores with Nike, Adidas, Reebok, and other Levi's jeans. But sort of expensive (compared to the US at least). Fitness centers - enough, both swimming pools, tennis courts, whatever you need.

Travel / My opinion on Gdansk and Poland after 11 days [45]

The graffitti really degrades the area.

I agree. Some young people in Poland think freedom=graffitti. It makes some buildings and areas look ugly..
