Language / The best way for me to learn Polish [89]

I always find that a hard thing to evaluate. Being a teacher who has learned 3 languages in the past, it is somewhat easier (French at school, Japanese and, of course, English). Polish came through desire. Some things just stay with you. There's a French teacher at my school and she reckons I'm still quite good with the vocab side of it.

I can think in Polish quite well but still have problems with cases. I haven't reached the tap stage yet where I can switch at will. I'm best at listening and translating what others say. Still a fair way to go though.

Life / What should Poland and Poles do, after first day of nuclear war? [133]

Being willing to limit your nukes, ah, now that's different. Not the same as actually limiting them. Apparently Obama is endorsing complete eradication. See the pattern? Both are just talk, trust me on that. Years of work goes into submarine deployment and nuclear posturing. Remember that they had more of a nuclear stockpile than America.

It has been said that they had/have enough warheads to destroy the world 3 times over. Realistically, who would they target? They really don't have many enemies. Please, if you know better, please outline their enemies as I don't see them.

Ever heard of bluffing? Lulling into a false sense of security? Russia is world chess champion btw. They excel in posturing. They have a lot of new technology but I can't reveal my sources on that one.

You don't really know what they have but you know they don't have much? That says it all really. Don't put your dislike for Russia in the way of rational judgement. Russia has more than enough to do the damage that it doesn't intend to do.

Study / Celta - Application Form [24]

Another wide of the mark posting by Dazza. Moonlight, I'd be happy to help with any queries you may have. I had to do a pre-task which involved presenting an idea to laypeople. It was after my interview in Edinburgh for a place on the course. I taught them the rules of chess as I had beaten a top computer a few times.

Dazza was wide of the mark as they can be selective, they are looking for a sign that you stand out, as is the case in many application and selection procedures. That was the case with Basil Paterson College, quite a prestigious school in Edinburgh. Just be natural and stay within your expertise so far.

Dazza seems like another Polish know-all, full of ego and useless information. I'd relish a debate with this man. I've won awards as best teacher in Hiroshima and here in Gliwice. I've also got all 5's in my observations and have been a trainer. That's just fact, not this posing. I'd love to see you in class, Dazza.

Work / Teaching English in Poland, no degree just certificate [41]

It should be a postgraduate and undergraduate distinction. You can study an MA, i.e a Masters, at undergraduate level in Aberdeen University, Scotland. The requirements for Polish teachers and native speakers are somewhat different.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

I don't know who you were referring to Dazza but some natives are sloppy, you are right. I have taught all levels and both the productive and receptive skills so you are unlikely to see slip-ups on my part.

What is your experience of Callan, Dazza?

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

The Polish teachers may be fine at the lower levels but they may well struggle when it comes to the higher ones. They tend to be too methodical, lack spontaneity and don't have the variety of vocab whereby they can turn their hand to everything.

I have teachers at my school asking me the simplest of questions and I think they're joking. Polish teachers tend to go on pride but they come up short in a bad way sometimes.

I've watched some Polish teachers teach and it's like watching paint dry.

Work / Interview at a Callan School [204]

As they pick up the tempo, they are more likely to lapse into their own Polish pronunciation. It just depends if the students spot it. Equal pay for equal work I guess.

News / Should Poles become a minority in Poland? [150]

One is talking about nationality and ethnic stem whereas the other is discussing naturalisation and the acquisition of citizenship. I tend to favour the former as, even when I marry my fiancee, I will not see myself as Polish. Yes, a citizen of Poland but a national of Scotland.

The British legal system, what's that exactly? Even the most basic of law students will tell you that the Scottish system is different from the English one. It's not that easy to tinker with legal systems, let alone wholly replace one.

White parents? LOL, what about those that are British through naturalisation and are not white?

Necessity being the driving force. It stacks the pressure on you but the Swedes are a confident bunch. How's your Polish, SP?

Spot on, PolishSwede. My fiancee doesn't speak English to me, it's Polish all the time. This is really helpful and English can always be a fallback in extreme cases. I have learned a lot and I'm grateful for that.

You Swedes are pretty quick on the uptake with languages. Most Swedes speak English to a high level, compared with certain other nations.

News / Poland..wake up to a multicultural world [1059]

You could back the above up with loads of evidence, southern. What you say is just reality and very accurate. Nepotism is not meritocratic.

Exactly right, the rich have learned how to get richer and NOT through merit either. I even heard of a 'snow bonus' of 250 pounds given to bosses when their workers had just gotten the sack. There are huge bonuses which bosses are adept at stealing, it beats me how they can get off with it.

You can advocate a meritocracy but there are many obstacles to it being fair, thus taking the merit out of meritocracy somewhat.

Exactly my point Foreigner, it's overly subjective and one man's meritworthy deed is another's hell.

Surely the merits test would be easy to prove? As people, we all have merits of some description or another. It just depends who is doing the judging and how strict they wish to judge this 'merit'.

History / Stolen hero of the forgotten war. [52]

I think Russia has the resources to sustain itself for quite some time yet. Natural gas is gonna be needed for quite some time yet. Also, Russia has important deals with other countries like Iran and Venezuela.

Still, CK, what is Russia gonna do to stimulate things on the domestic front? It is ailing at present and the ruble is becoming an insignificant currency.

Love / SOS!! I feel a little hopeless with my Polish husband... [58]

I get a rap for sitting in front of the computer on occasion. It's not healthy. My fiancee is doing her nails now but will want attention soon. Fine, some time to himself but all day? I have done that on weekends when my fiancee is at work but when she's here I don't do that.

He seems to be a chauvinist pig and worth snapping into shape.

UK, Ireland / Poles flee N. Irleand homes after World Cup riots [70]

This is why I was angry with the Polish hooligans deeds, if indeed it was them who started it. There are no doubt those waiting in the wings who are looking for a new assignment.

All it needs is for people to return to those primal instincts and it will get worse. Tony Blair may have had his heyday with the Good Friday Agreement but we see how inept and useless he is as part of the ME envoy.

If this slides, I don't know who'll prop it up.

Love / I can't trust Polish women any longer - where to meet a foreign girl? [123]

Well, I didn't call him a douchebag but more of a control freak. You don't allow people that which they already have.

Anyway, there are years ahead of him as you said. He may be doing himself a favour by staying away from those princesses that he seems to encounter.

I completely agree, where is the condemnation here? All I hear is people praising Polish hools here, as if they are sth to be proud of. "We have the best hooligans", I've heard this many times.

Rock the peace process in NI and you'll get what's coming to you. Sorry, I can't condone attacks on innocent people but who am I? They will do as they will do.

Come on Greg, Torny is not like that. All he was saying was that the Polish hooligans sparked this off (according to reports). They antagonised the NI fans, having spent the previous night demolishing pubs. Ask Torny, he'll say as I have. Read between the lines of his posts, Greg. He is saying that a few nobs spoil things for innocent people and that's a sad tale told throughout the course of history.

You are getting it all wrong Greg. It's appalling what they did to innocent Poles but action sparks reaction and we can sit behind out computers and thrash out the morality all day long but it doesn't change the fact that it happens. I can put myself in the shoes of the Poles who were attacked and I'd be angry and feel cheated too. Opening a can of worms is the worst possible result that can happen. A lot of work went into creating the peace process and even Sinn Fein worked overtime to bring about the Good Friday Agreement.

The bottom line is, I know the situation there much better than you Greg, it was my hobby for a long time to read up on it and if it is proven that the Poles (hools) started the fights, they have a lot to answer for. Undoing vital work.

Don't be so hard on yourself. If they are *****y (LOL) and irritating then that is not your failing, it's theirs. It's just the way you come across to some people, e.g "would be allowed to visit her family and friends". Eh, in the absence of a restraining order, this is her right.

Taking on the twists and turns of females is a full-time undertaking. It's not always the measure of a man what woman he has. That's superficial stuff really.
