History / Are Germans going to pay for WW2? [180]

Now poland is looking for a saviour in the eu like a dog looks to be thrown scraps of the table.

I suppose you still think you’re the master at the table. Flash news for you it’s Brussels. We’re not in full control of our destiny and neither are you, the sooner you realize that the wiser you will be and stop blaming everything on immigrants. But you don’t want to see that do you?

if it was not for british involvment in ww2 you would not be alive.

I survived communism and wimps like you I eat for breakfast.

History / Are Germans going to pay for WW2? [180]

How can you be so sure it was just about surrender? Some historians argue that he wanted to make peace with Britain. Do you really think that Rudolf Hass made his daring flight from Germany to Britain in a vain bid to stop the tragic conflict and it was not sanction by Hitler himself?

History / Are Germans going to pay for WW2? [180]

You’re confusing Poland with France. Perhaps the British at Dunkirk, swimming the channel was a better option than facing the Germans like a real men. You were running with a tale between your legs. But how can I be so cruel, I forgot there were only British and French, no wonder. Americans and Poles have not arrived in England yet to save you’re a**s. Talking about being incapable of defending yourself and expect all of their wars to be fought for them.

USA, Canada / US Polonians complain about petrol prices... [11]

A fuel tax (also known as a petrol tax, gasoline tax, gas tax or fuel duty) is a sales tax imposed on the sale of fuel. In the United States, the funds are often dedicated to transportation, or roads, so that the fuel tax is considered by many a user fee. In other countries, the fuel tax is a source of general revenue, which pays for many projects. So let us see if the price of fuel is really different when you subtract tax?

UK

From 2007-10-01 the main road fuel (petrol and diesel) duty rate in the UK is GBP£0.5035 per liter. The rate for biodiesel and bioethanol is £0.3035. Value Added Tax (VAT), currently at 17.5%, is also charged on the price of the fuel and on the duty. At a pump price of 128.8p/liter (typical for diesel as of May 2008), this would put the combined tax at 69.53p/liter, or approximately USD$5.16 per US gallon.

US

Fuel taxes in the United States varies by state. For the first quarter of 2008, the average state gasoline tax is 28.6 cents per gallon, plus 18.4 cents per gallon federal tax making the total 47 cents per gallon (12.4 cents/L). For diesel, the average state tax is 29.2 cents per gallon plus an additional 24.4 cents per gallon federal tax making the total 53.6 cents per gallon (14.2 cents/L).

Take the average price per gallon in UK 8.47 as of 5/26 and US 4.16 subtract tax

US = 3.69/gal
UK = 3.31/gal

Actually there is not that much different now is it, and the price is actually cheaper by 38c in UK

Language / The Longest Polish word?? [23]

There are two rules to write ordinal numbers in Polish. You either write them out in a written form or use numbers but you can’t use both. When in written form you write them together. For practical reasons larger numbers (anything above 100) are usually written in the number form and the smaller ones are in written form. For the most part it’s in number form when it comes to larger numbers. Rules might have changed and you might be Wright but that’s the way I remember them.

Language / The Longest Polish word?? [23]

Edyta and Zgubiony are correct.

In Polish language the longest word will always be an ordinal number (liczebnik porządkowy). As a rule you always write them together so take your pick. I believe this one has 90 characters but you might find a longer one. Possibilities are endless.

Stosiedemdziesiąttrzymilionyczterystadwadzieściadziewięćtysięcytrzysta sześćdziesiątytrzeci.

Or this one, it has 135 characters.

Czterystaczterdzieściczterymiliardyczterystaczterdzieściczterymilionyc zterystaczterdzieściczterytysiąceczterystaczterdziestoczteroletni.

And if you don’t buy this argument haw about a word from other languages’ that’s polonized.
This one has 43 characters.

Law / POLISH CITIZENSHIP FROM MY POLISH GRANDFATHER [20]

Here you will find some basic answers to the question regarding ELIGIBILITY TO ACQUIRE POLISH CITIZENSHIP.

Each case is different and contacting law firm is always a good idea.

People with Polish roots live in many countries around the world. Most of them emigrated before WWII, soon after it or later. If the ancestors who emigrated were born while Poland did not exist, before Poland regained its independence in 1918, it means that they emigrated as Polish nationals, but not Polish citizens. Poland did not exist as a state at that time, those Poles who traveled to Americas and else ware, traveled there as citizens of Austria, Germany and Russia. Such ancestors could not pass Polish citizenship to their children because they were not Polish citizens themselves.

The answer to whether one is Polish citizen and his descendants are eligible for Polish citizenship or a Polish Passport depends on the rules that applied at the time he/she left Poland.

The terms and conditions for Polish Citizenship and Polish Passport eligibility are set in three statutory acts: the 1920 Polish Citizenship Act, polishcitizenship.co.il/english/polish-citizenship-act-1951 -the 1951 Polish Citizenship Act and the 1962 Polish Citizenship Act.

(I could not find the link to the 1920 Polish Citizenship Act. It basically states that: Only people who lived in Poland in 1920 and not being citizens of other countries could be recognized as Polish citizens).

Poles in former USSR: mswia.gov.pl/en/document/the-repatriation-act-o/28,dok.html - The Repatriation Act of 9 November 2000, which became law on 1 January 2001.

The Statute on Polish Citizenship, as amended in 2000, permits the descendants of Poles who lost their nationality involuntarily between 1920 and 1989 to take up Polish citizenship without regard to ordinary naturalization criteria.

Each case is different and the procedure rather complicated so contacting a law firm is advised.

News / How to form political party with Pan Slavic orrientation in Poland? [34]

first what crossed my mind was that it is atavism of some `Communist party - Komitet`

That’s exactly what it is; it’s despotism on ex-communists part to return to power or at least to legitimize their party. By using this movement they want their voice to resonate with average Joe. This is an example of their manifest issued January 2008.

Anti missile defense system will be equipped with nuclear warheads to destroy Russia and conventional warheads to destroy Russian missile silos, which otherwise would be used to defend Russia against American aggression.

Let us defend our good Polish Russian relationship! Let us defend Poland, Czech Republic and Russia and the whole of Slavia, Europe and the World.

This is their view of missile defense system. On other issues they are more likely to use "Slavia" "Slavic Union" "Slavic Brotherhood" in every sentence. Roman Mulicz (Serbian secretary general of the Serbsko Slavic movement) was invited by them to make a speech about Kosovo And Metohia.

I have no idea who this character is and frankly I don’t care. His title speaks for itself. Serbs that want to be heard on issues such as Kosovo and find an audience should not associate themselves with such organizations.

With today’s technology and ready access to media such as internet, it’s very easy to make your case to average Joe on whatever issue you feel passionate about. People still remember old communist days and you don’t want to be guilty by association.

i bet Crow thinks the pan-slava should be governed from Belgrade.

I don’t think so. He’s just over enthusiastic sometimes and what he wants to say just does not come out right.

i think the idea of pan-slava was an awesome idea after ww1

I concur with that. Now Slavic states would have to be self sufficient and prosperous to even entertain such a notion.

News / How to form political party with Pan Slavic orrientation in Poland? [34]

It is progress. I'd not call it slavic unity, we have some common interests.

There is more to it than just common interest. For such a movement to gain a foothold or even to generate enough interest in it, so the majority of population in each country would even seriously consider it, one would have to offer something.

When the communism collapsed and the Warsaw Pact was dissolved EU had that extra something. NATO for protection, Common Market for economic growth etc.

I know that Craws vision of Pan Slavic Union is more or less based on EU model and not the Osiols vision of the Old Warsaw Pact, but you have to admit his vision of Russian expansion is not farfetched. I for one can see it happening.

In order to keep this dream alive (even though it has no chance at this time), people involved in this movement should screen their members more carefully. Enthusiasm alone is not enough, but the reputation is. By doing this at least you start your utopian dream right.

As far as cooperation and backing up one another, it’s also a good start. This builds trust and respect that is much needed in the Slavic world.

First time I read about them.

Well if people of Tejkowski caliber are involved in such a movement it’s bound to fail. His reputation is ruined and he has been painted as Neo Nazi. Even if he was not what the media portrays him as, he can’t shake off his past. He is a communist and always was, and his views are extreme left not extreme right like his recent run-ins with the law and media. Osiol is right if it was up to him such a movement would be governed from Moscow.

Such a thing already exists in Poland; it’s called Polski Komitet Słowiański. Who do you think organized the manifestations about Kosovo in Poland? I think it’s a branch of PWN Polska Wspólnota Narodowa if I’m not mistaken and the leader of this organization is Bolesław Tejkowski. They’ve been active in Pan Slavic movement since 98. Will they be successful? I seriously doubt it since they are anti EU, anti American and anti well everything.

USA, Canada / US citizen to stay in Poland for over 9 months. Do I need a Polish visa? [6]

U.S. citizens do not need a visa for tourist or business travel to Poland. Any U.S. citizen who wishes to travel to Poland for any purpose other than tourism or business negotiations (e.g. work, study, adoption, immigration, or stays longer than stipulated in the entry requirements) should contact directly, the embassy or nearest consulate.

A Schengen visa issued by an Embassy or Consulate of Schengen states allows the holder to travel freely in all of these countries. The period of stay for US citizens visiting the Schengen states is a total of three months cumulative stay in the combined member states during any six months period.

Since you are going to stay at least 9 months in Poland you do have to contact the nearest consulate. If you are US born but your parents or one of your parents is Polish citizen you are Polish citizen and you can apply for Polish passport.

What if an American wants to be there legally and work.....what kind of visa would they need and how would they apply for it?

You will need a work and residence visas.
Work and residence visas for U.S. citizens are free of embassy charge.
contact the embassy or nearest consulate.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

The Poles traditionally respect a strong hand and that is why they loved Mother Russia. The Poles have nothing in common with the united States of America, which in its very essence represents everything good from the true Anglo Saxon races.

Oh how little you know. That true communist education shows every time you open your mouth. Your indoctrination in that ideology is complete and it will never waver no matter how long you live in the west. That much I know for sure therefore I will not make any attempt to persuade you or even educate you on how wrong your statement is, but I would like you to satisfy my curiosity. Is the average Russian mentality so primitive? Or is it just you that cannot let go of the Utopian dream, that is long past and gone? Perhaps it is jealousy of us Poles that is the driving force behind your statements or for that matter Russian politics itself? Could it be that you the Russians are simply afraid of us Poles? For the last 200 years your ambition plans for Europe have been spoiled by little Poles, and that my friend shows how much respect we have for a strong hand. Even the resent history that happened during your lifetime has proved it. Your wretched Utopian dream has vanished, half of Europe regained their freedom and all you could do is watch how your Empire collapsed. We called it Solidarność, others called it fight for Freedom, and that my friend is one thing we have in common with America, because that’s what America stands for. So it has to be FEAR, no matter what you do those pesky Poles are always in your way and spoil everything. Is it too much for you to comprehend? Or perhaps when you read you can’t comprehend more than a slogan on a red banner? Look around you, enjoy what you have left of your life. Even Cuba is changing, time for you to grow up and enjoy your retirement.

Michał has a good point here, the Poles do respect a strong hand as they lack the guidance skills necessary to be a major player on the world stage.

Yes we lack the guidance skills necessary, especially when it comes from Brussels or Berlin on many issues concerning Europe. Conforming to the dictate of others is not necessarily a good thing. To me it shows independence, wanting to find a better path to ones’ future, etc. That’s exactly Michals point that we did not conformed to Moscow dictate.

Food / How to sour/clabber homogenised store-bought milk [17]

You need to boil the milk first

You don’t need to boil it. Freshly purchased milk from the store is already sterilized. Heating process is only for texture so it comes out grainy not stringy. This is how I make it.

Homemade “twaróg” white farmers cheese

1 Gallon of milk
1 Pint of Buttermilk
12 Oz Sour Cream

Combine all ingredients in a large pot, Mix gently to distribute culture throughout the milk. cover with cheese cloth set aside at room temperature for 1 to 3 days depending on the condition. Important do not stir during this stage just let it sit there for 1 to 3 days. This stage will usually take anywhere from 1.5 to 2 days.

Heat the coagulated milk over low fire stirring it from time to time, DO NOT LET IT BOIL. Separate cheese from whey by straining it through cheesecloth. Hang the cheese in cheesecloth over the pot to drain access whey. I usually do it for 7 hours otherwise it’s too moist. Transfer the cheese from the cloth into a small container. Keep refrigerated until consumption.

If you like you can keep the byproduct “Whey” for other purposes by keeping it refrigerated.

News / Why does Poland love the US? [144]

I remember liberating a German slave labor camp

My hat is off for you than. I’m sure that plenty of Poles appreciate your contribution, and what you have achieved in WWII. If no one here said that before let me be the first one to Thank You for your sacrifice. However this doesn’t change the fact that many of those liberated had no country to go back to. Many of them felt cheated out of the victory. As a veteran yourself I’m sure you understand. Great number of the Polish veterans of war had to stay abroad. The ones that have returned faced persecutions by the new government of Poland forced upon them by that very conference. This is not what they fought and sacrificed their lives for. It’s not that you contribution is not appreciated, it’s just that history is being distorted by a simple statements like these. For many of my countryman the fight continued when it was long forgotten in the west. It took another 40 years to overcome it.

Many of Brits and Americans that read the statements about the Yalta conference think that Poles somehow despise them and have a tendency to take it the wrong way. This is not the case, even during the communist times Polish people felt a great admiration for the west and never resented it. Since the movement of people is free now and many have traveled abroad they have experienced firsthand haw we are perceived by the western people so the sentiment have changed a bit. But it’s not all that negative as you might think.

So what has that to do with my statement?

The major players in WWII have divided up the world into the spheres of influence after the war at that very conference. This left Poland in Soviet sphere, before WWII Poland was independent. So can you honestly say that this gave Poland its independence? No it was Wilson not Roosevelt that did that. Your time frame is just a tad off if you want the credit.

divying up CZ with the nazis in 38

Same old arguments because you have nothing else useful to accuse Poles of. I suggest you read the history of this particular event one more time because the understanding of these events seem to elude you. Throwing in the statement like "with the Nazis" shows it.

then sending in troops again to CZ in '68

Another stupid argument on your part. Reading your posts I see you have a great pride of being a history buff or student. I haven't quite figured out which, for if you were a student of history you should know that Britain is as much to blame for the events in CZ 68 as Poles if not more. Here's a picture to prove it.

The Poles are not proud of those events as you have seen it stated many times on this very forum. Politicians at that time were very eager to please their masters and show how good of lap dogs they can be for the sake of their carriers. The great tradition continues today, perfect example of this is "Kosovo". The action of Polish government did not reflect the sentiment of the people then and now.
