Life / Car or no car to commute in Warszawa? (Warsaw) [13]

I live in Warsaw and ride everyday. The drivers are angry as hell and REALLY dont like cyclists here. They have no concept of sharing the road. Still the backwards village mentality of "I have a car so I am more important than you". So in that way its far from bike friendly. Lots of bike paths now but almost none in the center. Live close to your work. No need for a car here except to get out of town. There is a bike path map online. That said cycling has become quite popular just in the last year here; one could even say trendy, of course that ends in the winter ;). Public transit is ok although now they are hiking the rates and plan to double them in the next 5 years. All utilities are being increased here as well.

Love / Polish women USED TO BE much more attractive: [162]

Yep they are fat here but of course not as big as in the UK, Ireland or especially good ole USA. I went to Ukraine for the weekend and came back to Poland and the girls looked fat here so its all a matter of perspective. Unfortunately more money equals more fat if health education doesn't exist.

News / POLAND LEAVING WHAT COUNTRY FOR A BETTER LIFE?? [73]

Since Polish companies prefers to hire Poles

Its true! In the past foreigners were much more in demand but now Poles have their economy running quite well and don't need foreigners as before. If anything other countries could look at Poland's economy for pointers (that is unless the govt are just lying about the figures which could easily be the case). Even in teaching. Native speakers are mostly only useful for conversational classes. The lower level students are better off with the highly trained Polish teachers for grammar.

News / Potheads attack police in Warsaw [40]

actually legalization is happening in the most progressive of states only

Here's the list that I found.
Past and present attempts to decriminalize cannabis by state
*Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, New Hampshire,
Oregon. I really wouldn't consider Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, and Nevada progressive states. Would you? And a guy told me today that there were 5000 people at the rally.

News / Potheads attack police in Warsaw [40]

potheads

Ha I haven't heard that term used for ganga smokers since the 80's. Maybe someone has been watching too much Beavis and Butthead? I teach professional Polish adults in corporations and even the most conservative ones are for the decriminalization of the weed. If its happening in the often draconic states of the USA then it can happen anywhere... Even Donald Tusk said he wouldn't have said he didn't inhale pot or some kind of political speak. If somebody proposed a decrease in personal tax or an increase in pension payouts in conjunction with decriminalization then I bet everybody would be for it even the Radio Maria crowd :) Instead of old people lining up for at the pharmacy they could just grow some ganga in their windows haha

Life / Help...any Polish remedies for hives? [17]

Hives can be difficult but over time can be eliminated. The first thing to do is to deal with the stress as the hives are a symptom of the stress. I know you said that isn't an option but it is your choice whether or not to allow an external factor to cause you stress. Chamomile tea is a popular stress reliever. Just google natural stress relievers and you will find many natural and cheap solutions. Another more effective and long term solution is meditation. No need to take a course just again google meditation techniques pick one or combine some as to your taste and practice daily and you will find your stress level decreases quickly. As well avoid coffee and other stimulants which will increase your heart rate thereby thinning your blood stream and allowing hives to form much easier. Also avoid medications such as advil and other nonaspirin pain relievers which also thin your blood stream. When you do have attacks go to a dark quiet room and try to breathe evenly and slowly to slow your blood down. Good luck. I used to have similar problems and was able to overcome them. You can also!

Work / Typical rate for 1-on-1 English lessons in Poland (Krakow)? [37]

relying on private lessons is a dangerous game

good advice. Charge at least 1zl per minute net for business clients. Otherwise some discount is good for students. One way to keep private students is the have them pay one month in advance.

Life / EXPATS in POLAND: 10 things you miss / don't miss about home . . . [138]

best indian in warsaw by a long shot

I could not have been more disappointed when I ate at Namaste. Given that I did used to live in India, I wasn't expecting truly authentic food but all the same it was not tasty and the Polish girl working there might hurt her face if she was to ever crack a smile.

Law / English-speaking bank in Warsaw ? [33]

I use Get In. They seem to actually be a Polish bank which isn't easy to find. There is one guy at my branch who speaks English and thats enough for me. I like to try and support the Polish companies when I can.

Work / What jobs pay 10,000 zlotych per month? and Where can i find one? :o) [101]

A benchmark of expected salary is useful for a teacher considering different options of where to teach. You can criticize teachers all you want but if not for teachers you probably wouldn't be able to read this or type your response. Some teachers do it for the money but that doesn't last. I enjoy teaching and also enjoying saving my money while doing it. Some teachers volunteer for free or even pay to volunteer to teach. That is fantastic if that is what makes them happy.

Law / Are Blackberry devices popular in Poland among business and individuals? [57]

Blackberries are the number one business phone for business people in warsaw for sure. The Iphone is a gadget which doesn't provide the same services as a blackberry. Most people here have phones which are given to them by the corporation they work for during their service at the company. The cellular providers often give the phones for free or have a rent to own feature while subsidizing the cost of the phones through the revenue generated by the service contract. When the zl was stronger many people were buying the blackberries from the states. As well the Iphone has many dead zones in the city.
