News / Weekend of carnage as 41 people lose their lives on Poland's roads [44]

It's not a new thing, Poland's roads are known for their high death toll and this weekend past, the last weekend of the holiday period, Polish media reports that 41 people lost their lives on Poland's roads as holidaymakers returned home.

Although the death toll is a slight decrease from the same time last year (43 died compared to 48 in 2008) the injury rate is higher with 549 people injured (up from 524 last year).

Officials name many reasons for the high accident rate (around 400 reported accidents each year at this time), one of them being total disregard for other motorists. However, what's worrying is that despite campaigns by Polish police they reported that over 1,500 people had been taken in for driving under the influence of drink over the weekend.

What are your experiences of Poland's roads?

Do you think Polish police will succeed in cutting down drink-driving on Polish roads with their current campaigns or do they need to re-think their policies?

Are Poland's roads better or worse today compared to previous decades?

Travel / Any PRACTICAL advice for a new visitor to Warsaw? [29]

At the moment prep for heat and humidity and rain :(. How long are you going to be in Warsaw for? Let me know. I'll try to get you the word on Jazz clubs and local events in the next few days. :)

Life / POLISH FLAG DAYS...when are they...? [30]

something to be proud of...if they don,t like it they can always leave the dam country...!

Yes it is sad that in the UK the flag represents extremists rather than people who are proud of their country. The only place it seems acceptable to fly it is parliament or the palaces or castles, that kind of thing. Otherwise, the ordinary householder who wants to fly the flag is usually seen as being affiliated to some kind of extreme group. Shame.

Work / The qualifications of a Polish doctor [10]

I am slightly confused.

When a doctor qualifies as a general practitioner in Poland what letters are they having after their name and what do they mean?

If we say Dr PolskaDoll what would be the letters of a GP who hadn't practised elsewhere?

Thank you. :)

Food / New Polish Recipe Website - I Love Pierogi [17]

I will try to. Not sure it'll be in my own kitchen and there will be others there so it could be kind of busy so maybe the only pics will be of finished items. Recipes should be easier to post up though.

Remember this thread?: https://polishforums.com/food/pictures-27517/#msg524860 ;)

Just looked through it and now I'm hungry... :/

I was thinking about ILovePierogi.com, hopefully the user upload section could be added soon because there are many here on PF who could add their tasty dishes. :)

Food / New Polish Recipe Website - I Love Pierogi [17]

Yes good website Michal. :)

I have a special reason to be cooking lots of Polish food in the near future so I'll bookmark your site and hope that you'll keep us informed when you add new recipes. :)

I have a Polish friend who'll be interested in this website too so I'll pass it on.

Actually Michal if you have an ILovePierogi Twitter page can you let me know? Thank you. :)

Food / WHY IN POLAND PEOPLE DON'T USE ICE? [142]

If you go to any bar or restaurant in the US, they fill your glass up with Ice first, especially cocktails.

That happened here too though. Sometimes I think "there's no room left for the drink!" ;)

I think you'll find in Europe we like cold beer. Supermarkets here in the UK sell more and more of these big sacks of ice which are just ideal for parties etc.

Food / WHY IN POLAND PEOPLE DON'T USE ICE? [142]

I was in Ireland, England and Holland, same situation in each country.

Well I dunno where you went wrong. If anything people complain because of too much ice. Can't speak for Holland, never been there.

Sledz, give up on all the "Brits have bad teeth". Sensitive teeth aren't bad teeth, it's actually most likely to be caused by over brushing and rubbing away the tooth enamel. You don't have Sensodyne in the USA? Or Crest, Arm and Hammer and Rembrandt who all make toothpastes for sensitive teeth and sell, sell, sell in the USA.

Ice - available by the truck load in most of Europe.

UK, Ireland / What do you hate about England and English people? [142]

We aren't used to seeing uncared for teeth on television, so the stereotype was born.

That's what I mean about media. They'll stereotype anyone in any way if it sells.

Hopefully perceptions will change because if they do it can only be for the good. :)

people generally have bad teeth

People have teeth. How they look after them is entirely up to themselves. It's a media stereotype that Brits have bad teeth.

People can look after their own teeth without having to even go near a dentist six monthly, it's just about taking care of them. In the UK it can cost you a fortune for even a check-up, privately or through the NHS.

People who don't look after their teeth have bad teeth no matter where in the world they live.

News / Komorowski won Poland's presidency vote? [125]

Half an hour ago with 20% of votes counted Komorowski had 50.6% of the vote and Kaczynski 49.4%. Too close to call but I suspect Komorowski will win even by a slight margin.

Life / Talking over people in conversations; is it a Polish trait? [41]

That's something I find annoying too but it's not just a Polish trait. I see it here among non-Poles often, especially two women in my street who just talk at each other when they meet. They both talk at the same time.

As a child I was taught that it's rude to interrupt and rude to talk over someone else (especially an adult).

Mention it to your partner.

UK, Ireland / Missing Polish woman found murdered in Chesterton, UK [27]

same as they did with van der sloot whos all over the TV and the only reason they didnt get him in hollaway case the first time is lack of evidence.

Yeah that has been a total cock-up. Not the UK though (thankfully).

in the article is says-Officers are continuing to appeal for witnesses who saw anything

so no witnesses, they dont even have the body identified yet, and they are holding this guy to the murder??

They probably have some witnesses and evidence but they'll want more and as much as they can possibly get. Better to have 10 witnesses saying one thing rather than just the first one they find. It all helps towards a conviction.

As for the ID - they'll know who she is for sure but it's required here to have a formal identification made by a NOK or similar.

In the case of Elzbieta Kinczyk, they wouldn't have arrested the guy having no evidence but they really don't publish what that evidence is in the press. A press release will likely just say someone has been arrested in the case of whatever the crime was and maybe when they'll first appear in court. The police here only release a bit of evidence info if it's going to help them by doing so. Otherwise they keep it close to their chests. Usually most things come out at the court case.

agree, how can they even hold him without evidence

They've arrested and charged him and remanded him in custody until his court appearance which means they've enough evidence to go to court. So they must have had evidence enough to pick him up too.

not sure if one is innocent until found guilty in uk.

That's the case.

The person in the dock is innocent until the prosecution provides sufficient evidence for the defendant to be found guilty. To find someone guilty the evidence must show that they are guilty beyond reasonable doubt, if there is not enough evidence to do that then the defendant should be found not guilty. Or I think in Scotland the case can be found 'not proven' as well.

Love / A Polish womans relationship with her mother in law. [44]

My son said 'Polish girls do not speak to their mother in law' (IS THIS TRUE PLEASE) He then informed me that he had done a survey at work (UK) and said 'nobody speaks to their mother in law.'

Of course Polish girls speak to their Mothers-in-law, the only reason they wouldn't would be if there was some conflict or other.

Your son is the one with the issues here, I don't think his wife is the problem.

comming on a forum you'll always get 'strong advice'. Keep in mind that this is not a professional service.

Correct.

Life / Saw a girl in black openly smoking a spliff on a Katowice street today [49]

Me? I'm back in the Burg and don't do da dope. ;)

Seems like it's hard to tell what this one girl was smoking though. Maybe hash, maybe just tobacco. Even if it is the Mary-Joanna you'll always get someone daring enough to smoke it where someone from PF will spot you and report back to the rest of the membership. ;)

UK, Ireland / Female health in Britain - Polish view [105]

and another in Inveraray who was downright dangerous...I have signed various petitions to have him removed from the post after he refused to treat people he didn't like, and misdiagnosed multiple people.

Petitions are great but if you asked every person who wanted to sign the petition to submit a letter of complaint to the relevant person in the NHS the outcome would be different and quicker.

Ksysia
I've never really heard of any problems concerning female health care in Britain and believe me I would if it happened often. I missed one smear appointment and they badgered me relentlessly until I made a new one, for example.

My sister had an abnormal result form a smear and she was dealt with very well, Amathyst has no complaints from her own scary ordeal. The system here is good, very, very good and we don't let people suffer.

What is the issue with midwifery? Midwifes here are specialised in their fields and often doctors take their advice as good and there are no issues. So is that problem that we say "this is your midwife" rather than "this is your doctor"?

Interestingly, although it must have happened, I have never personally dealt with one complaint against a midwife.

Genealogy / Unanswered Polish names requests - anyone have information on the following? [21]

It is thoughtful of you to put them together PD.

They were put together by someone else, I'm just finishing the task on their behalf and thanks to them for doing it. :)

it's just a bunch of surnames.. nothing really to write about them.. some have meaning some don't.. some may not even be real.. just names, i tell ya.

True indeed. Some of them don't mean anything or have any known origin but others don't so if anyone has any information on any of the names it would be appreciated if they would write about it here.

UK, Ireland / Time for the Poles from the UK to go home [437]

I don't agree with Winston's choice of words, but I would think that more would agree with him than you might think.

I'm not under any illusions about the feelings of people regarding immigration and I also agree that immigration needs to be more tightly controlled. Foreign criminals should not be getting into this country or any other. Limits should be placed on how many immigrants can enter. However, his declaration of 95% is not backed up with evidence and as we all know, these stats come from on the street polls of less than 1000 people usually.

Id hazzard a guess that your social circles consist of quite a lot of Poles, ergo your social circle are hardly going to speak negatively about mass immigration. To do so, would be considered rude.

The good thing about my social circles is that we tend to be able to talk about any subject, including immigration. I have Scottish friends who'll bring up the problems with immigration and Polish friends who will agree with them. We also manage to have these conversation without descending into argument.

Your article from the Times shows research by MORI where 975 were asked. While it shows the opinions of 975 people of voting age it doesn't show accurately the views of the nation. Without knowing more about the people asked you can't take polls seriously (not just these immigration ones - any kind) and they will be variable depending on where you ask them. Like if I stand on my front street and ask fifty passers-by if they like sunbeds I'll get a different result than if I were to stand outside a tanning salon and ask the same question. The only way to get a true account is to ask every single person in Britain aged 18 or over.

I'm not saying people in the UK don't want immigration controls to change, I'm just saying these polls can be manipulated. That's all.

95% of the British people

At a guess I'd say that percentage comes from about 100 people asked in a predominately BNP area. You can come up with any statistic you like if you ask a certain number of people in a specific area. Like I could go to Spain and ask 100 people in certain areas if they would like the British ex-pats to return home. In one area a high percentage would say yes and in another area a high percentage would say no. Easily manipulated are these statistics.

YOU ARE NOT WELCOME IN OUR COUNTRY...LEAVE!!!

Speak for yourself. BTW what is your country?

Love / How common is it for husbands in Poland to open their wife's mail ? [30]

Kojak333 if you're really that worried about it I'd suggest sending it to her place of employment if you're clear about her name, job title and department (especially if it's a big health care centre).

I imagine you'd be able to send it to her home without issue though.

Getting a friend involved might not be what your friend wants but if they're willing to help then that would be great but I wouldn't have them hand deliver it, that might be a bit much for your Mother. You'd also have to trust your friend to post it on once they received it.

Good luck.
