Po polsku / Gdzie jest najlepsze miejsce w Polsce aby kupić książki? [29]

Food / How to make this syrup for Polish Ginger Beer? [8]

Have you had actual ginger beer though?

Yes, not so sweet as beer with ginger syrup. Thats what probably OP liked in this beer - more sugar:)
My girlfriends normaly don't drink plain beer. They prefer to add syrup: ginger, raspberry, apple, name it...;)
It's not so bad once in a while.

Food / How to make this syrup for Polish Ginger Beer? [8]

Sounds awful.

From time to time I drink beer with ginger syrup and I don't complain. Tastes good.
There are some recipes on internet how to make ginger syrup, but it would be easier to just buy one.

News / Don't go to Poland ... because you could end up coming back in a coffin [313]

The difference is that we actually deal with the issue, unlike Poland

Yeah, cause you say so. I'm wondering if the recent reports about sacking Legia hooligans were just a dream:

There are lots of morons in Poland, just like in other countries. Police are dealing with the issue also just like in other countries: sometimes better, sometimes worse. Hooligans are not exclusively a Polish problem, so get over it.

Easy way to explain it:

99% of fans will have a great time, have a few beers, enjoy the football, the good weather and mingling with the other teams fans.

Maybe

post topped all. Great sense of humor and a much needed reality check for some. Cheers.

Polonia / Anything in Hamburg which connects to Polish culture or history? [4]

Hamburg was the main port, through which Poles emigrated to USA and Brazil in XIX c.
The estimations differ significantly, but most of them say that from 1820 to 1914, 2 to 3 mln. people from Poland (at that time partitioned) emigrated. Most of them went through Hamburg port. This emigration had a great impact on Poland, it's social, economical and political situation at that time.

There is a museum in Hamburg dedicated to the emigrants who went through Hamburg to the New World, to follow their dream of better life. It's not exclusively dedicated to Poles, but they are included.

Here you have their facebook site with some pictures: facebook.com/BallinStadtAuswanderermuseum

Siostra antykwarycznego kota Dante - Fufu:)

pl-pl.facebook.com/FufuSiostraDantego

Za samą obecność kotów, jest to dla mnie najlepszy antykwariat w Polsce.
Książka w ręce i mruczący kot do pogłaskania obok...więcej do szczęścia nie trzeba.
Macie jeszcze jakieś miejsca do polecenia?

Life / Our Life impact and expectation in Warsaw During EURO 2012 [6]

Maybe finaly some informations and maps in Warsaw for turists that make sense.
Anybody here saw the map of bus routes near the Dworzec Centralny? Unreadable, unimaginably complicated and useless. Should I also add that it's been there for ages.

Football fans will mostly use public transport in Warsaw, so somebody should think about providing simple and useful informations. Little change could bring a lasting positive effect.

Study / Is it really worth moving back to Poland to study in a pharmacy school? [44]

gross dude. gross.

No, as police stated on their site "zarabia miesięcznie „na rękę”, which means that this is their salary after all taxes. In a tabel they clearly stated netto.

Police have good salaries plus earlier retirement. I don't say thats bad, conversely, good for them. But don't make me believe in you 3000zł story. Police site says a different one.

Well, thats a worthless comment, you think GDP means nothing. What matters, fairies?

No, not fairies. Inteligent partner in a discussion for starters.
The one to whom I don't have to repeat the same arguments I made few days ago.

Thats just great, because in your la-la land nobody' wages will never rise and I can employ people on low wages.. for ever.

In our la la land prices also are rising. You can't get it because in "your world" prices are unchangeable?

Study / Is it really worth moving back to Poland to study in a pharmacy school? [44]

GDP has grown from $156billion to $550billion.

I think we already talked about GDP and I clearly stated that it means nothing.
However since you brought that subject...

GDP has grown from $156billion to $550billion. So in REAL dollars GDP gas risen 256% over that period. Where do you think that money is going? wages.

The problem with your numbers is that you think that GDP authomatically means wages. Thats why your numbers don't add up.
Wages are only a part of GDP. Here you have some educating table.

Food / Your favourite Polish foods! [180]

Phonetic spelling looks like this: kaˈpuɕɲak
There is also another soup that is similar to kapuśniak - "kwaśnica". They have similar ingredients. Check recepies to find which one your grandfather used to make.

info.policja.pl/portal/inf/859/47709/Zarobki_policjantow.html

Site of Polish police, where you can find info about earnings.
"Najliczniejszą grupę stanowią osoby zatrudnione na etatach detektywa i asystenta (5. grupa) - pracuje w niej prawie 21 tys. policjantów. Zarabiają oni średnio 3144 zł miesięcznie".

Career cop and nurse have 3 000 combined salaries, yeah right...

News / Presidential elections and debates 2015 Poland [472]

The main purpsoe is to slash the number of fatcat parasites living off the fat of the land (ie taxpayer). So far all the austerity measures are affecting the nation, not the VIPs.

The salaries of members of Parliament aren't so high as you claim. They can't claim that they are too low (considering Polish conditions), so it can't be an incentive to corruption. The salaries are also not so high, byzantine-style. Nothing to complain really.

broken link removed

Just going back to Lancias instead of today's pricey BMWs would be a big saving, and many other could be mentioned. It would; also set an example to make other spending cuts more palatable to taxpayer/voters.

Great, I agree! Lets also replace expensive jets with less costly Tupolews.... oh, wait, we did that :(

Presidential and parliamentary as well as local elections and any referendum issues should be merged into a single election day (regardless of whether that means unifying terms in office to 4 or 5 years).

There shouldn't be any presidential elections on nation scale in Poland in the first place.
As for the all elections at the same time I think it is bad idea. The different kinds of elections we have in Poland are a way to show our politicians if society is pleased with their politics and reforms. They are a way to comunicate with our "belowed leaders".

Different elections are also helping to stabilize situation. Because of them politics is more an evolutionary process.
Every kind of elections in one day can be simply called - revolution. Not really a constructive idea.

News / Polish politics: Lessons in etiquette [15]

or other way around...
Today was a day of shame in Parliament. Some of our "beloved leaders" think they can say whatever they want, without worrying about consequences. But there will be consequences, just wait untill next elections.

In the mean time, unfortunately their lack of responsibility is applauded by some...

Language / Mam silnego kaca! Why is this genitive/dopełniacz? [34]

I've never heard of the term "virile"

Me too, until I tried to translate "męskożywotny" ;)
Maybe I'm using wrong English definition. If that is the case, maybe somebody here know what is the right translation of męskożywotny.

I think you are using that term rather loosely

and I think the same about your usage of declination.
Even if some nouns have the same form in different cases, they are still declinated. In the case of "psy" you have to know the meaning of sentence to know which case was used: nominative or accusative. Then you can determine the role of word in sentence: subject or indirect object.

Language / Mam silnego kaca! Why is this genitive/dopełniacz? [34]

there's a declension with the singular form, pies becomes psa: "Mam jednego psa"

Because accusative of virile (męskożywotny) singular noun takes the form of genetive.

but "Mam dwa psy". no declension in the plural form

Accusative of virile plural noun takes form of nominative. It is declinated.
...just another example of how easy Polish language is...

Law / Polish child maintenance-why do they need to know my sons earnings? [3]

Because they want to know what is the current financial situation of her and her family and based on that measure the amount of alimony. For example if she now have a good financial situation and her ex bad, the alimony would be lowered.

They take into account not only her earnings but also her partner's.

typical reaction of PO supporters

Sleepiness is a typical reaction of PO supporters?
So what about PIS, PSL, SLD and Ruch Palikota?
My guesses are:
PIS - lunatics
PSL - sleepovers
SLD - hipersomniacs
Ruch Palikota - insomniacs

Language / Mam silnego kaca! Why is this genitive/dopełniacz? [34]

I'm not a native speaker, but my Polish Polish teacher in the States said that cars take genitive.

Ordering or eating, it doesn't matter, it's just that some foods take the genitive and some don't.

In this case, as in cases listed in previous posts we use partial genitive (dopełniacz cząstkowy).
Partial genitive is used when you talk about indefinite part of a whole or about something abstract.
When you talk about something definite and considered as a whole, you use accusative.

News / Forbes: Boot Argentina from the G20 and include Poland [44]

True, but when talking about economic issues is the global standard to determine size and growth.

Global standard/lie and a very dangerous lie. I think that there is a place for unrealistic indicators (like GDP) in current crisis.
What is shown as economical and civilizational success is in fact a sign of social erosion. Everybody woould want to work near the place they live, walk home to eat lunch and after work have fun with family. But from the point of view of GDP it is better to live tens of kilometers away from home. Then loads of money and time are consumed by just getting to work. Lunch is of course eaten in city, probably some kind of fastfood. Nanny is taking care of children. Maybe some have to take overtime to pay for all that. Nominally such person is wealthier...

Governments like to boast a growth of GDP, but they don't say how GDP is increasing and/or decreasing the quality of life.
I'm not trying to pomote

hunter-gathering lifestyles

I hope you can see that ;)
I'm saying that GDP is a failure and we shouldn't stick to it as the only possible indicator. There are others more accurate.

News / Forbes: Boot Argentina from the G20 and include Poland [44]

But it`s the quickest of all.

Quickest but still useless. Welfare of society is not just about economic prosperity.
In some countries (I'm not going to point finger) children are sent to work instead of school. Economy is growing thanks to that and GDP is also growing. In USA high level of incarceration is also contributing to USA GDP growth.

What I'm saying is GDP does not reflect all aspects and needs of modern societies. Worse - it may conceal serious defects in the well-being and quality of life.

What else do you propose instead?

There are many new ways to measure progress of societies (not only economical one). OECD have for example Better Lives Dashboards, European Union is going to make new indicator based on European Quality of Life Survey, and many, many others. Almost every new approach is better than GDP in portraing the real state of wealth and well-being of country and society. Thats why I'm asking why GDP is still used?

News / Forbes: Boot Argentina from the G20 and include Poland [44]

Yeah, and the latest rift in Argentina-Great Britain relations have no influence on Forbes...
GDP is not a very accurate indicator, in fact it is useless. I'm wondering why it is still used? Why they are using GDP to justify the G20 "membership"?
